Stepping through the red door, Janna’s office was a modest space rather fitting the petite woman. She didn’t go to great lengths to decorate, but it was definitely more than the standard grey furniture and carpet. On the wall above the couch was an image of an ocean scene that could be almost anywhere and the standard grey slim arm chairs had been replaced with softer larger armchairs in a dark blue that looked inviting to curl up into. On top of the standard carpet, the sitting area was covered in a plush rug in different shades of blues that matched the ocean in the photo. On the other side of the room where she mostly worked, there was a tall leafy plant near her desk and a single silver photo frame on the corner of the desk where she could easily see it when she worked at the computer terminal. Overall, the place was warm but practical and uncluttered- much like Janna.

Taking the small box over to the coffee table, Kingston sat in one of the arm chairs and proceeded to unlock the latches that unlocked the lid. Peering inside, she frowned and looked up at Halsey with a quizzical expression.

Lifting a small piece of paper, Janna started chuckling. “Note says, ‘Sometimes seeing isn’t sight at all.’ This is definitely has my friend Sam Pittman written all over it,” she said as she set the paper down and lifted an object out of the box. It was a clear sphere about twenty centimetres in diameter and by the way Janna had to steady her arm, was made of a heavy material. Possibly glass or something akin to it. “I’m a fortune-teller now?” she said with quirked eyebrows.

“Well, that or it’s one of those wellness orbs that is supposed to center your being,” Brooklyn spoke with a deep imitation of some yoga teacher that was about to tie you up into knots. She had no clue about this Jana Kingston or her approach to life. She did pick counseling as a career which typically meant a few things. One was they were warm caring people that wanted people to be the best version of themselves. Two was they experienced some sort of trauma and wanted to be there for others experiencing the same thing. The third was that they had a fascination with sentient behaviors. All three subtypes spoke volumes on a person’s character. Brooklyn had no idea which of the three Janna was but that would come later.

“May I,” she picked the globe as she pulled out her personal communicator. Holding the communicator up like it was a divination rod, Brooklyn arranged herself into a southeast position in the room. Moving forward she set the object down. Standing back she looked at its placement. “This definitely represents an earth element in design. Spiritually it should be put here in order to boost your luck in business, and prosperity and to create new opportunities. Since you are in private practice and I don’t think as a counselor you particularly want mental health crises I say we go with the creating new opportunities and prosperity for those that enter here.”

Janna watched to woman with unbridled curiosity. “I’m not sure if that’s what Sam meant it to be or not, but I do think it’s better safe than sorry. After all, anything that improves the work that goes on in here is useful,” she said with a smile. More than likely the glass ball was a puzzle that she was meant to figure out but it would very much be in keeping with Sam’s gifts that it would not be solved right away.

“Are you very interested in things like feng shui?” Kingston asked.

“Oh hell, no but I dated a guy once that was. Feng shui is supposed to be all about the positive flow of energy but it should be more about a positive footpath at two am when heading to the bathroom,” Brooklyn let out a deep laugh. “I can not tell you how many times I stubbed my toe on something in the middle of the night. What I can tell you is one day he announced that my dedication to feng shui was putting out a lot of negative energy. I asked him if he really wanted to see negative energy. We subsequently broke up but know what,” she looked at Janna.

“What?” Kingston

“He was right. The second I feng shuied his arse out of my life things became a lot more positive. Are you into this spiritual stuff? If so I got a guy on Beliaiorn V that makes the most amazing incense. If you are interested let me know. It’s cheaper in bulk so I can make sure I can snag you some from the distributor when we send out the next shipment.”

Janna chuckled. “I’m more of the rational researcher type but I will admit that over the years I’ve experienced enough strange and inexplicable things that I can allow a degree of mystery from the Universe into my life. So if you have amazing incense and want to share, by all means, I’ll be glad for it. Even if I end up keeping it for my quarters,” she said with a grin.

Gazing over at the glass ball, Janna was thoughtful for a moment. “Either way, that glass ball is a puzzle, I’m sure of it. My friend Sam likes to send me one every now and again. They’re usually the kind that take weeks or even months to figure out. It’s his way of saying he was thinking of me.”
