Janna downed more of her fresh drink. “I’m trying to lean into what Doctor Kingston thinks about all of this. At least if indulge my researcher brain, it takes the edge off of the whole situation. That and I’m not exactly in this alone. The person I connected with is also going to be tested here and there too. Because nothing says budding relationship like being scanned while you touch,” she said with a laugh.

Daggum’s eyes went wide and he said “Seriously? Oh wow… aaawwwwkward.”and he chuckled. “I mean all the best fairy tales start off ‘Once upon a time a princess met a prince and- through a series of clinical evaluations, neurological scans, and biometric sensory mapping protocols- they fell in love and lived happily ever after.’” and laughed and then drank. “But hey, who am I to judge? I think Faye and I redefined the term ‘long-distance relationship’. I’m sure you two will weather that just fine.”

Daggum

Janna grinned. “Luckily for me, I don’t believe fairy tales are real life. I’m okay with an unconventional start. He is a rather unconventional person, and I’m full of surprises, so I think it fits,” she said before sipping her drink.

Janna braced her elbow on the table and propped her chin in her hand. “How did you know Faye was the one?” she asked, feeling rather mellow by this point.

Daggum smiled as he took a long drink. He set the now-empty glass down and looked at Janna and said “I didn’t.” and he laughed softly. “No matter what anyone says, you never know. You just want one another to be, and you hope it’s true. And you work to help make it true. But other than that, you never have a guarantee that that one person is the ‘one’.”

Daggum

“I should know better than to expect definite answers when it comes to people. I do have a doctorate in psychology, but damned if sometimes you just want to hear that something will be easier than it you think,” she said with a laugh before knocking back more of her drink. For a moment Janna just closed her eyes, feeling the sensations the alcohol was producing in her body. She enjoyed a drink here and there, but she hadn’t let loose for a long time. Hell, the last time was when her and Orvos and Stark went galavanting on the Starbase and look how that turned out.

Then Janna sighed and, gazed at Daggum. “I’m ready. I want it all- marriage, kids, the whole damn thing. Even if it doesn’t end up being with him, I’m ready.”

Daggum looked at her quizzically for a moment. “Really? Usually you find the one you want to try to have all that with first. You’re kinda engaging the warp drive but with no ship.” and he chuckled.

Janna laughed. “Not at all. It’s good to know what you want. It’s not like I have a timeline for any of this either. I just know now for sure that that is what I want in my life. Nothing more, nothing less. I just know that I don’t want to get twenty, thirty years down the road and regret not even trying.” She knocked back more of her drink and then leaned forward, definitely feeling the buzz more strongly. “I’ve been safe, hiding behind my profession and my people watching. I watch from the sidelines. I’m not a part of it, Daggum. Risking heartbreak is hard but to have a partner and a family of my own? I think it’s worth it, don’t you?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“I think that entirely depends on the partner.” Daggum said. “But if that is what you want, go get it. Trust me. I spent a lot of time hiding my work, too. But I wouldn’t change anything for where I am right now.” and he rolled his shoulder a bit and winced. “Except where that damn dog bit me. I don’t think I will ever want an animal now.” and he laughed.
