“Could I tag along? I am pretty sure I got a box of beakers I can drop off on our way there. You kinda have me intrigued and I would love to live vicariously through you right now,” Halsey let out a laugh. Janna was turning out to be far more fun than she thought. Not that she had any real preconceived notions about anyone. She had only been on the Athena a hot minute. In fact, she was organizing the supply areas with more enthusiasm than her own quarters. Luckily with her position as Quartermaster, Halsey got to me virtually everyone on a ship and for the most part, people were generally happy to meet her because she always had something they wanted. It felt good to bring people happiness when they were so far from home or a happy thought from a friend that was far away.

Janna picked up the glass ball with a glimmer of excitement in her grass green eyes. “You know what? I have a feeling this is going to be fun. The more the merrier, come on,” she said gesturing with her head.

Stepping out into the reception area, Cherry quirked a brow at the object in Kingston’s arm. “New sport?”

She laughed as she stepped backwards. “Scientific investigation! Mark me out for an hour or so, but f course call me if it’s any of the usual.”

“You got it,” the receptionist said with a grin as she shook her head. “You keep her out of trouble, Halsey.”

As Kingston stepped into the corridor, she eyed the woman who was as short as she was. “Cherry says that like it’s something to actually worry about. It’s usually quite the opposite, I assure you.”

“Pfft. Calm people are boring people,” Halsey said. “If you don’t get out there and try things you are going to die saying I wish I had. Speaking of wish I had, have you ever gone to the Lupidian Snail Races? I had to drop off a package to main engineering and met Ros. Next time they are racing we are going and he said I would be in for a real treat. I am suspect,” she let out a laugh. “So how long have you been on the ship?”

“Snail races?” Janna said, giving Halsey a sideways glance as if checking she was being serious.

She shook it off and focused on the question, which was a nice segue from the woman’s initial comments that triggered a feeling inJanna that she was well used to stuffing down most days. “I’ve been here six years now, which on this ship can really feel like much longer. The ship is certainly not boring, that’s for sure,” she said as they found a turbolift.

“Deck Thirteen,” Kingston called out once they were both in.

“Where did you come from before,” Brooklyn asked watching the number of decks on the control panel. “I was on Outpost 42. In some ways that place is not much different from the Athena. Both are floating cities but the Outpost got a lot more traffic. Do we get dirt side often or is that a rarity?”
