Faye laughed as well. “Fine, but we need to follow my sister’s instructions first and unwrap the painting. If I can find it,” she said, her eyes skimming her belongings. Nadine had been very specific that she had painted something for them and she wanted them to wait till Faye got to the Athena. Why, she had no idea, but all she knew is that her sister was rather bossy and that that air of authority that either came from being a teacher or Shara’s daughter. Or both.

Finding it carefully leaning up against a wall, Faye brought over the piece and set it on the sofa, layers of fabric protecting the canvas from any bumps. “Ready?”

“Do it already.” Daggum said with a grin.

Micah had told her about Nadine’s work in her apartment, so it didn’t surprise her that the piece was a slightly abstract ocean scene, but between the cliffs and the sweeping cove, the location was one she knew instantly and she sucked in a breath. There was a card there and when Faye read it, she passed it to Daggum without comment.

Faye & Daggum, I hesitated to paint Muir Beach but couldn’t explain why I felt it was necessary. Maybe it is because it’s a place that meant a lot to Faye at a time when she needed respite. Or perhaps it’s because of that night where everything became revealed on the holodeck and that led you two to having a future together. The hows and whys don’t always matter but through any hard times you might endure, remember that it’s together that you shine, that you rise above. I love you both,

~Nadine

“She’s really good,” Faye said, reaching out to brush her finger along some of the brush strokes.

Daggum eyes the picture and said “Yeah, she really is. That’s… something else.” He looked around the room and said “Ok… in here or the bedroom? Your call.”

Daggum

“In here,” Faye declared without missing a beat. “That way if anyone else other than us comes in here I can point to it and say ‘my sister painted that’.” There was pride in her voice but also that feeling of happiness that comes from finding a long lost family member and actually liking them.

“We can hang it in a bit but I’m going to see about clear ign room for me to sleep now,” she said with a grin, moving off to the bedroom.

Daggum watched her go, and then smiled. He went to the kitchen, opened a drawer, took out the magnetic picture holders and attached them to the back of the frame. He then went to a space and set the painting in it, making sure it was level and looked back at the door to their quarters. Anyone entering would see that as one of the first things. “Done.” he said mostly to himself, and then he walked into the doorway to the bedroom and leaned against the door jamb, filling the entire opening. “Its hung when you want to see it.” he said and gave Faye a wink. “But if you want to move it, we can.”

Daggum

She laughed. “I trust you,” Faye said as she unpacked some folded clothes and tucked them into the free drawers of the dresser.

She moved back to the crate of clothes and pulled out the beautiful green silk dress she had worn on her magical only first date. “This needs to go in the closet,” she said, moving to the other corner and sliding open the wardrobe. But her motions were slower, her mind deep in thought.

“I had a weird moment in that meeting, near the end, when the captain commented about the group of us being a family. It was visceral. You’re my family here. The rest of it is on ships scattered everywhere and on Earth. And it made me think of Mom and Micah. I know it has to be this way, that I am just left to wonder. But I’m worried,” she said, her hands resting on the hangar as she looked back at him, her eyes shining with tears. “I just got her back and things are good between us . And I have a father in my life. I don’t that I could bear to lose either of them. And it makes it hard to look around this ship and see potential family and a part of me feels terrible for it, like I’ve already failed before I started.”

Daggum’s first instinct was to take her in his arms and hold her, but he stopped himself. He looked at her and nodded in understanding. “I know you are worried about them, Faye. So am I. But you and I both know that either one of them is more than capable of handling whatever gets thrown at them. Together? Psh… feel bad for whoever they go up against. I think the only applicable term for the level of pain and anguish those folks will have is ‘biblical’.” and he chuckled and winked at her.

He wasn’t wrong, and so Faye inhaled deeply, blew out a breath and nodded.

“And I and you both know that these people aren’t your family… not yet at least. I’ve been here for a while and I have maybe two actual friends on here. This crew can be a bit insular. I think it serves to protect themselves. This ship gets in trouble a lot… better to keep new people at a distance until you know they may be sticking around a while. At least that what Janna told me a while ago. Speaking of… what did you think of her when you checked in?” he asked with a smile.

Daggum

Intellectually Faye knew that Legen hadn’t meant his casual comment to hurt, but it had. Because Dag had been the only other one in that room to know just how hard Faye had fought to be in a place to have family and actually let herself be a part of a family. “She’s…” Faye gave a half frown but it wasn’t because of Kingston but rather how to evaluate their session. “Good at what she does, I’ll have to give her that.” Faye gazed into his eyes. “She’s one of the few therapists I’ve talked with that really seemed to grasp my BPD brain and she’s not afraid to use that knowledge. She’s certainly not going to let me off the hook with anything,” she finished with a lopsided smirk.

~Faye

Daggum laughed and said “You got that right. She’s a force of nurturing nature when she thinks she has to be, that’s for sure.” He moved two empty crates from the bedroom to the living room and came back in. He flopped down on the bed and said “And yeah, she’s good at what she does.” and he looked at Faye. “Kinda reminds me of you a bit. Capable, knowledgeable, and not scared to get their hands dirty to get the job done right.”

Daggum

Faye continued to unpack garments, clearly distracted as her mind traipsed down rabbit holes and she had to work to pull herself back to the present.

“I have you and Tess, and I have Kingston to help me stay steady. I just… I was nervous before we came, but now I’m the head of a whole department, and one that this ship seems to make good use of. And I’m going to keep working on my command training and keep the ultimate goal in mind, but…” She turned To Daggum, her grey-green eyes holding fear. “Tell me it’s going to be okay?”
