Daggum watched her go and chuckled softly to himself. “What a woman…” he said and rolled out of bed. After grabbing a pair of underwear, he walked into the living room and sat down at the desk. He pulled up the file Paul had sent and then stood up. “Here ya go, hot stuff…” he said and moved to the replicator and began getting drinks.

Faye sat at the desk and and hit play, bracing herself.

The file was a vid, obviously done by a drone that flew around, over, and through the former gladiatorial arena. Gone were the dingy hallways, pools of stagnant water, and signs of years of neglect. The entire building was now clean and well lit. The trash piles had been replaced by stacks of construction materials and benches of tools. Here and there were the signs of terminals being installed; as well as large vid screens. But the biggest change was the arena itself.

The open forum of the arena, the space where the fights had taken place and individuals… individuals like Daggum himself… had fought to the death for the merest chance at life was now covered. It was the ground floor of the building and now housed classrooms, counseling suites, and a cafeteria… or rather, it would in a few weeks. No longer open to the sky, it was almost unrecognizable as the land where so much blood had been spilt.

“Wow,” Faye said, her pale eyes wide. “That’s remarkable. I can tell having Paul onsite has made a huge difference. If you haven’t already planned one, which of course you have, you should consider a memorial plaque, something that honours the ones that never made it out.”

Daggum was on the couch with a comic that had a strange almost Vulcan looking male on the cover with wings on his feet. Across the top it read ‘Namor - the Sub-Mariner’. “Statue out front, actually. Orion artist from Risa commissioned to do it. Should have some concepts in a few weeks.” he replied from behind the pages.

She looked over her shoulder. “I take it he is behaving himself?” It was strange but Faye didn’t feel the strange swirl of emotions that even the mention of Kodell would stir in her. Maybe, just maybe, all that was really in the past.

The comic came down and Daggum looked at her. “He is. And according to Paul, he’s even enthusiastic about the project.” The big Orion shrugged and said “I guess we will see…” and he lifted the comic back up.

Daggum

“Any issues in the execution of the plans so far?” Faye asked, rising from the desk and moving over to the sofa and settling in next to him, her bare legs crossing at the knee as her robe shifted. “I’m sort of curious what the public reaction has been so far.”
