Lt. Ducante arrived 5 minutes before 1400 hours and saw that Lt Shock and Ensign Kleine had arrived. There was also another Commander he had not met before in the room. “I apologize for my tardiness, a newly assigned ensign was lost finding his quarters, so I helped him out.” Lt Ducante said facing Lt. Shock. Then he turned to the Commander. “Good Afternoon, Ma’am, I don’t believe we have met yet, I am Lt. Ducante.” He stated.

‘Well we are happy you are here, and it is not 1400 hours yet so you are still on time.’ Jordy said he is excitied to start the training.

Calloway reached out and shook Ducante’s hand. “Faye Calloway, Chief Intelligence Officer and everyone’s favourite rebel,” she said, flashing a grin.

“So, phaser tag. Let’s agree to the rules now so there are no issues later.” Faye was also aware that she had told Shock that she didn’t always play by the rules so was curious how he’d factor that in. Or if he would at all.

Shock certainly paid attention to that, hoping that on one hand, Calloway would play by the rules as a player of honour. At the same time, her chaotic nature might prove a good lesson for Ducante and Kleine. Enemies would rarely play by the rules.

“The rules, Commander, gentlemen, are as follows. These special phasers are set to the lowest setting of stun. A hit will immobilize a hit body part for about two minutes. No aiming for the head or neck. Please wear the designated protective gear on your kneecaps, elbows, hands, shoulders, and the helmet. These will not protect against a hit, but will protect your body should you lose balance and fall on the floor. When one team has become completely immobilized, for example by hits to each leg, each arm, and the torso at the same time, for both members, that team will have lost.”

He looked at Calloway, Ducante and Kleine.

“Any questions?”

– Lt Shock (COS)

‘No sir get ready to lose.’ Jordy said

“Decorum, Mr Kleine,” said Shock, cautioning his junior officer. “I trust we will continue tol show one another proper respect, even when participating in this training exercise.”

– Lt Shock (COS)

Calloway laughed. “Please, a little smack talk doesn’t bother me.” She leaned in towards Klein. “But kid, careful who you direct it at. I was wielding a phaser rifle before you were even born,” she said with a gleam in her stormy grey-green eyes and stood back upright.

‘We will see who is the better shot.’ Jordy replied.

Shock glanced (more like glared) at Calloway. He did not approve of what she said. It undermined his authority over his junior officers. Yet, she was a guest here, and she was also a rank higher than he. He decided not to comment on it, in the interest in building rapport with her and with his new-formed team.

She turned to Shock. “I agree to the rules. What’s the setting?”

“Computer, enter setting: Voroth/Raal cliffs. Season: Summer. Weather: Dry; wind: light breeze. Timing: Sunset”

The holodeck changed to a Vulcan seaside evening setting. There were redding hues on the ground and blueish hues in the sunset.

“Colleagues, around you are the shores of Raal,” – Shock pointed to the edge of the cliffs – “There is the Voroth Sea.”

“I grew up not long away from here. My family would sometimes go to this spot on our way to visiting kinsfolk. This is a chance for you to get to know me a little more – where I from. You will notice it is hot. The temperature is now 32 degrees Celsius, common to a Vulcan summer evening. That will make endurance hard. Drink fluids whenever you get a chance. I will hand out water bottles and phasers to you momentarily.”

“You will not be able to move further away than a 150 metres’ radius from this boulder over here,” Shock pointed, “even if you can see all the way to the horizon, the holodeck won’t allow you move further than these 150 metres. If you touch the border, it will feel like crashing into a giant mattress. Do not do this for your own amusement.”

“Any more questions?”

– Lt Shock (COS)

‘No sir i am ready.’

Ensign Jordy Kleine Security

The perimeter of 300 metres in diameter consisted of rugged wind-swept terrain. Boulders and rocks were found all around, some of which would be large enough to be protective. There were no buildings. However, in the southern part of the perimeter, there was a dry ditch that varied from between 50 centimetres deep to up to three metres deep.

“Both teams have now 5 minutes to go to there starting positions, where you will find a box with holo-phasers. Mssrs Ducante and Kleine, you will start in the far west, and Ms Calloway in the far east. When you hear the ringing noise throughout the holodeck, the game will have begun.”

“Now, find your starting position.”

With that, Shock ran eastwards – leaping fast.

– Lt Shock (COS)

Faye moved, but not as fast as the others took off. She was jogging, taking in all the surroundings, noting the bluffs and outcropings, the places that might be strategic later.

‘Yes sir.’ Jordy said as he started running to the starting position.

On his end of the pitch, Shock made some quick preparations. He turned to Calloway, “What overarching strategy should we employ? Play offence, or defence?”

– Lt Shock (COS)

“Experience allows you anticipate the actions of others better. I’m inclined to go on the defensive and let them set the tone,” Calloway said, knowing that how one reacted to such a scenario revealed more than it might seem on the surface.

Lt. Ducante had listened to the rules and the banter between the Ensign and the Lt. Comm. He followed Ensign Kleine as they ran to the starting point. As they loaded up their water source and weapons, he turned to the Ensign and asked, “You ready? What do you think they will do?”
Lt. Ducante, security

‘I am ready, i do not know what Commander Calloway will do but i think Lieutenant Shock will do logical things and i think the best way to take down Lieutenant Shock is by doing the onlogical.’ Jordy said.

Weapon in hand, Faye continued to survey their surroundings, using her incredible memory to paint something of an topographical map in her mind. Already she had calculated several possible outcomes for this exercise, but even as she took a sip of water and stashed the container into her supply belt she was looking for the unexpected actions, the outcomes she wasn’t yet predicting. “Tell me one thing about yourself that will help me understand how to be a partner in this exercise with you,” Faye said.
