Faye had settled into a chair with Tess on her lap and she let her hand soak up the sensation of the feline’s soft fur as she sorted out how to broach this delicate topic. “Through my file, the classified medical portions of it, you will have noted that while I was a guest of the Tal Shiar, they were conducting something of an experiment. There was a surgery that I don’t remember entirely, mostly because for most of the nine months I was with them I was usually drugged out of my mind. After I escaped and was rescued by the USS Atlantis Doctor Ryley removed a tiny implant at the base of my brain stem. What we didn’t understand at the time was that while yes it was triggering a pain sensation in my body when I experienced strong emotions, it was also preventing my brain from accessing memories. More specifically, information. That they put they.” She leaned forward slightly. “They treated my brain like a computer hard drive, which isn’t a stretch given how it works anyways. But without the implant to block the flow of information, I would experience these rushes of memories. I call them memory dumps. They are fast and overwhelming. The Human brain isn’t meant to process that much information at once so my nervous system freaks out. I struggle to breathe and I had someone once tell me it looked like I was having a seizure.”

Benjamin nodded as he listened to her story, a slight frown on his forhead as he partitioned a part of his brain to work on a seed of a potential idea.

She exhaled abruptly. “I learned to stop the dumps from happening altogether as I recovered from my incarceration, but they do occasionally still happen. I’m usually fine and no offence to doctors but I don’t like medical bays at the best of times but especially after a memory dump I’m… sensitive to being around people with medical equipment. By all means, treat me if I’m not okay, but it’s just a warning that I might not react well.”

Again, Ben nodded with an understanding expression, he didn’t really understand as he had not really had any traumatic events… well not any he considered truly traumatizing. Well ok, that may have been a little lie, deciding which of himself should survive after a temporal shift created two versions of himself did probably have some lasting effect he hadn’t explored yet but that was irrelevant. “I try not to take anything personally, Commander. During my first rotation as a Junior Officer on the Polaris, one of my patients punched my DH in the face, breaking his nose and knocking him out, during labour in the middle of a battle” He said with a mild smile “That was not the last time I had to cover for him because he was knocked unconscious” He was trying to keep a light atmosphere.

Faye snorted. “Well, you’d be surprised what people take offence to. I have Borderline Personality Disorder; I’m unfortunately rather skilled at finding the right buttons to push. Just know in advance that I rarely mean people harm by any of it.”

He crossed his legs and leaned a little back in his chair “To be frank Commander, you have a healthy support system available, you show excellent foresight when it comes to potential issues, especially when you have a history of certain reactions during something that is likely to happen” he spoke in a casual tone “And I thank you for the warning” He inclined his head in a half nod. “I do have a question regarding these memory dumps, If you’ll allow”

Calloway nodded. “You can ask, but I think it goes without saying that I might not be able to answer depending on classificaiton.”

Benjamin chuckled at that “No worries, I’ve worked with Intel people before, the biggest problem is always getting them to admit that a scar wasn’t actually a-done with a Klingon sword but from them falling off a table whilst inebriated” He tapped his nose indicating it was a joke “My question is simple, you know expect it really isn’t. What, if anything, has been done to curtail these seizures?” He leaned forward slightly “I understand that you may be reluctant to go through a procedure thus my curiosity.”

“Nothing, per say,” Faye said. “The device that was inhibiting them had to come out. When I said it was triggering pain sensations, Doctor, by that I mean it induced a sensation that my body was on fire. I endured that for the better part of my nine-month imprisonment. Without the device, which was destroyed by the way, and without understanding exactly how it was doing all it was meant to, nor what the Tal Shiar’s objective was, trying to meddle in my brain stem has seemed like a bad idea. For the most part I can control the mind dumps simply through emotional control. Though I will say that something shifted in recent months or even the lat couple years where I’ve had lots of emotional difficulties, but it didn’t trigger the mind dump. My hypothesis is that by doing things like yoga I calm my nervous system and then I can control whether a mind dump is allowed to happen or not.”

“I see” Benjamin nodded “Well then there’s the consideration on whether this is something that should just be managed or if there is anything to be done to fix it” He scratched his chin, a thoughtful expression on his face “And you are right of course, we’d need an expert on neuro-surgery as well as an expert in Romulan/Vulcan neuro practices of which there might be three in the whole Federation” he pursed his lips, he disliked having one of his crewmates suffering from something that should be preventable “Have you considered Vulcan therapy?” He said after a moment’s pause “With the risk of surgery being too great unless absolutely necessary I think you may wish to consider something less…” He hesitated to search for a better word “scientific if you will” His smile turned a little apologetic.
