Faye nodded and then gazed at him intently for a moment. “I don’t mind the questions. Answering them is not always comfortable, but at this point I have nothing to hide. Yes, there are a lot of secrets in my life, but from my doctor? I won’t keep any that will stop you from helping me live a healthy life. I may not be able to make a lot of promises, but that is one I’m going to make, okay?”

Benjamin nodded at that “It’s a good attitude to have” He smiled “Although it does deprive me of opportunities to scold you for holding back medically relevant information” He chuckled at his own bad joke “But in all seriousness, I admire your approach to mental health and applaud the work you’ve put in, I’ve known people, strong people, that crack because they did not take their mental health as seriously as they did their physical”

Hands in her lap, Faye gazed down, her eyes tracing the place where she had taken out her lost hope on herself. When she lifted her head and gazed at him, a rueful smiled appeared on her face. “Oh Doc, I’ve been where you go when you do give up. I survived that and every bump since then just reminds me that I still have a life I’m living. I work hard to keep my mental health as good as it can be because in my mind there’s no other option. Especially if I want to keep wearing this uniform. And that means more to me than most people can understand. As I just mentioned, I’m not in the habit of making a lot of promises, but the one I made to Starfleet? It’s often what has kept me going.” Sad sometimes, but true. And it gave her a strength she still didn’t fully comprehend. Perhaps she didn’t need to.

Benjamin nodded soberly at the thought, he had his own struggles and oftentimes the uniform and the Delta badge felt like the most stable things in his life “That much is true for a fair number of us” He smiled slightly at that “It’s funny how symbols are important to people and how something so small can have such meaning.” He stroked the Starfleet combadge on his chest. Another thing that he found amusing that without that badge the uniform was only a piece of cloth. For him and many others the Badge made the uniform.
