“It depends,” Janna said. “It might be safer and prevent disappointment, but sometimes we need a bit of disappointment in order to know how we truly feel about a situation. It’s in the pain that we find the most growth.” She kept her gaze even with his.

“Also true! Without pain there is no growth. And that’s why this convergence is a must. Stagnation is not ideal. So either I force a confrontation, let the cards fall where they may, and move on by. Or let it stagnate and sit causing us some unnecessary uncomfortable meetings in the future. I choose to get the pain done with.” he said, his eyes still curiously analyzing her as well. Truth be told, she was getting deeper into who he was whether he liked it or not.

“What sort of outcome are you expecting in this particular instance? You seem to have an instinct about it,” Janna said, choosing her words wisely (as she almost always did). Nor did she expect Dawson to think otherwise. It was precisely why things in their meeting were flowing as they were.

“I expect some hostility, some talking, and eventually an amiable resolution. Despite having been wronged, I would hope that friendship is still the ultimate goal.” he said, perhaps letting guard down a bit.

“How do you intend to approach this very delicate conversation?” Janna asked, knowing full well that one could feign openness. But she didn’t expect Dawson to bear his soul to her or anything. That was never the goal in a boarding eval and she certainly didn’t expect it from an intelligence officer. At best she could hope for an understanding and some mutual respect and the knowledge that Janna wasn’t the enemy and was here to help.

“Well, I had thought about a public apology. Maybe in the Parthenon or over speaker through the comms.” he said with some light humor. “No, I intend to speak to him on his terms about the issues we face. I’m confident it’s not something that can’t be overcome.” Dawson was perhaps a man of few words, but in this case, the ball wasn’t entirely in his court. He had learned to accept such matters as they came about instead of railroading people with his own desires to certain outcomes.
