Cherp’Eng headed towards the counselling suite on Deck 11. As he approached, the doors opened and Cherp’Eng ducked as he entered.

“I’m Lt JG Cherp’Eng, here to get cleared for duty on the Athena,” he said politely upon arrival.

OOC: Cherp’Eng is an Avisarite, a custom species of my own devising and approved for use within STF. Basically think sentient ostriches. A link to the approved species sheet is on the character sheet for Cherp’Eng. However, both are linked below for ease of access/use by the lucky doctor who gets to look after Cherp’Eng
Character Sheet: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/character/551/
Species Template: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/command/gmd/notes/7191/
There are items for both medical and counselling in both the sheet and the template.

Inside the half-moon shaped space, the door faced the central reception desk where a Risian Ensign sat. On either side of the entrance were a few chairs that faced the six doors behind the reception desk, each a different colour. These were the offices. “Welcome to the Athena! I’m Cherry. Give me one moment here while I check something.” Her fingers moved over the keys as she looked up the appointment schedule to see if he had one scheduled. He did not, but he was flagged on a list of new transfers that would need an eval.

“Right, no appointment, but I do think Doctor Kingston is free, so let me go check if she can take a walk-in.” With a respectful bow of her head, Cherry moved off to the red door, knocked and when the door slid open, stood in the doorway speaking quietly for just a moment.

She returned with a smile. “She’s free. You can go right on in.”

“Thank you very much Cherry,” Cherp’Eng replied, smiling as he returned her nod, “and may the winds never blow you off course.” Which was an ancient farewell of the Avisarites.

Stepping through the red door, Janna’s office was a modest space rather fitting the petite woman. She didn’t go to great lengths to decorate, but it was definitely more than the standard grey furniture and carpet. On the wall above the couch was an image of an ocean scene that could be almost anywhere and the standard grey slim arm chairs had been replaced with softer larger armchairs in a dark blue that looked inviting to curl up into. On top of the standard carpet, the sitting area was covered in a plush rug in different shades of blues that matched the ocean in the photo. On the other side of the room where she mostly worked, there was a tall leafy plant near her desk and a single silver photo frame on the corner of the desk where she could easily see it when she worked at the computer terminal. Overall, the place was warm but practical and uncluttered- much like Janna.

The woman rose from her desk, PaDD in hand, and smiled as she tucked an errant blond curl behind an ear. “Come on in and have a seat wherever you like. I’m Janna Kingston, and you are Cherp’Eng?”

Cherp’Eng nodded to the Counsellor, and looked around the room. And ended up going to the centre of the rug.

“We, that is my people have a lot of difficulty with chairs, couches, beds and a lot of other pieces of furniture that non Avisarites use for comfort. It would be most comfortable for me to relax here in the middle of your rug, if that’s not an issue.” Cherp’Eng said politely.

Then he added, so as not to give offence, “it was most thoughtful the way my quarters were prepared for me and my needs, Counsellor.”

Janna gave a wide grin as she moved and without preamble settled herself onto the lush carpet. “I have no issues with this at all. I’ve had session in a variety of places but between you, me and the carpet, I know what you mean, it’s very lovely,” she said, running her fingertips across the tips of the soft but sturdy fibres.

“So tell me Cherp-Eng, what brings you to the Athena? It’s a ship that brings the most interesting and diverse group of people into a solid working unit. I’d love to hear how you feel you fit into things here and what we might be able to do to help you adjust as well.”

Bump

Thank you Linds.

IC: Cherp-Eng smiled at Janna and happily sank into the rug. It was soft and a relief to be able to take the weight off his feet and relax for a short time at least. He considered her question, what brought him here? did she mean which ship? Did she mean why was he here? He couldn’t decide, so he decided to answer both questions.

“I don’t know the name of the vessel that brought me here, but it was very uncomfortable for me. I had to sit in a corridor which meant I was in the way of the crewmembers doing their jobs and my fellow passengers. I couldn’t stand at my full height for fear of hitting my head on the ceiling, the quarters there were almost long enough for me if I lay on angle. Apart from the academy when I was originally assigned to a middle bunk, it was the only time I doubted I should be in Starfleet. But when I conduct an experiment in the lab or discover something amazing, I have no doubt I am where I am meant to be. I am here because when I am here I am free, the most free of any living Avisarite as I can fly, not under my own power, but I can fly all the same and bring knowledge of the galaxy back to my people. I joined Starfleet to find out more about the galaxy and to find out if there arr any others out there like us. This is my third attempt at this as a career. There were deaths in the Roost and I had to return both times to celebrate their lives. But, I am here now and looking forward to life on the Athena.”

–Cherp’Eng

Janna smiled at the description of being free and there was a sincerity in the words that she could feel was true. There were a lot of small details to unpack there that could potentially affect how the officer adjusted to being on the ship, but they could only go in one direction at a time. “Tell me about the previous attempts at this career. Did they last long? And what do you think you gained during those times?”
