“Well, this is a great place to get a feel for the ship. Lots of different people come in here. Some more social than others,” Faye said with a light grin. This wasn’t an interrogation, nor was she here to draw out anything from him. On the surface she wanted to make sure he wasn’t a threat, yes, but the Captain had already deemed him okay to be on the ship. She would do her job, but she would lend Legen the benefit of a doubt with this situation.

Ted set down more glasses and slipped away.

“Faye’s right. Most people end up here sooner or later. Over the time that I’ve been here, I believe we’ve seen at least nineteen races grace these bar stools.” Marishka explained. There were probably a few more but those really couldn’t be discussed at the moment.

Khabal leaned forward.

“Really? So few races?” he asked in mild incredulity.

He picked up a glass and filled it with the Orange Kanar.

“It depends,” Faye said with a shrug. “It’s a very large ship, but Starfleet is formed predominantly from the member worlds, and many of the crew come from those core worlds. Een the colonies tend to have similar demographics.”

Marishka nodded and smiled. She poured a few drops of the same kanar Khabal had just poured. A full glass of the stuff would not suit her tonight but, she would never let it be said that she was a rude hostess.

“I have a feeling you’ve seen many more races than a lot of people aboard this ship Mr. Khabal and, if Captain Legen takes you seriously, that’s probably where your information would be come of most use to us. Given the area of space we are in, what can you tell us that might be something interesting we don’t already know?”

  • Marishka

“Oh I have seen many many races. So many that I’ve lost count. Let’s see… Information about this area… ” Khabal started and looked thoughtful for a moment.

“The veil between spaces is thin here. Sometimes things peek through.” Khabal said cryptically.

“Someone escaped satellite two.” Khabal said then shook his head, “Wait, that’s not in this area of space. I do have a lot of data stored in my ship. Much too much for almost anyone to remember.”

  • Khabal

Marishka had been listening intently even though she was watching the flow of patrons and wait staff. She had a feeling her new waitress, Daphne, wasn’t going to last much longer.

“I had heard veils can be thin in areas of space but I don’t know very much about such things. What does that mean exactly?”

“I can explain the science behind it, but I too am curious how others explain the phenomenon,” Faye said. Meanwhile, as Faye sat on her stool, her fingers were lightly tapping on the bar top to the beat and it was like she was trying to contain any movement in her body.

Khabal leaned back and sipped at the Kanar savoring the feel of it’s heat in his belly.

“As you know, the structure of space/time isn’t uniform. The structure has places where space/time thins out. It can allow brief contact between planes whether it be spatial, dimensional, temporal, or any combination. We are in one of those thin areas right now. I can tell because the shadow gates are easier to open.”

Khabal took another drink and gave a satisfied sigh.

Marishka nodded and smiled a bit. All of this was just for conversation. She wanted to know as much about Khabal as he was willing to share in this public space. She, herself, had danced through a few veils. That was a story that brought to mind the current Captain and the CIO which she didn’t feel like revealing at the moment.

“I’m rather fond of shadows.”
