Marishka had been listening intently even though she was watching the flow of patrons and wait staff. She had a feeling her new waitress, Daphne, wasn’t going to last much longer.

“I had heard veils can be thin in areas of space but I don’t know very much about such things. What does that mean exactly?”

“I can explain the science behind it, but I too am curious how others explain the phenomenon,” Faye said. Meanwhile, as Faye sat on her stool, her fingers were lightly tapping on the bar top to the beat and it was like she was trying to contain any movement in her body.

Khabal leaned back and sipped at the Kanar savoring the feel of it’s heat in his belly.

“As you know, the structure of space/time isn’t uniform. The structure has places where space/time thins out. It can allow brief contact between planes whether it be spatial, dimensional, temporal, or any combination. We are in one of those thin areas right now. I can tell because the shadow gates are easier to open.”

Khabal took another drink and gave a satisfied sigh.

Marishka nodded and smiled a bit. All of this was just for conversation. She wanted to know as much about Khabal as he was willing to share in this public space. She, herself, had danced through a few veils. That was a story that brought to mind the current Captain and the CIO which she didn’t feel like revealing at the moment.

“I’m rather fond of shadows.”

“You can open these gates intentionally?” Faye asked curiously, even as she took in Marishka’s comment. It wasn’t just that her job was to gather information and make sure it was both used safely and protected where needed, but she also needed to get a better sense of how all the pieces of this ship fit together and whether that picture was vastly different than the one portrayed. For a ship like the Athena? The answer was most likely a ‘hell, yes’.

Khabal smiled and nodded.

“I can but your captain has asked that I don’t make demonstrations in public areas.” he said gesturing around the room.

Faye smiled, even as her stormy grey-green eyes were rather. “Probably for the best.” Already her brain was branching off in multiple pathways of logical consequences, and as always she was comparing them side by side even as she was focused on the conversation she was a part of.

Something had Khabal’s attention. There were moments in Faye’s casual conversation where her gaze seemed more focused and her demeanor more inquisitive than most other’s he’d met outside the Cardassians and Romulans. He did nothing to conceal the curiosity in his gaze.

“Something about you reminds me of the general suspicious attitudes of the Cardassians and Romulans.” Khabal said with all the social subtlety of a chainsaw.

Marishka set the thankfully empty glass down and smiled.

“I do appreciate someone who doesn’t stand on ceremony. I’m certain it’s become apparent by now, Mr. Khabal, that not many people here are quite what they appear to be. It’s just something that is acknowledged and accepted. I don’t think a ship like the Athena could run any other way.”

As she spoke, several men dressed in outlandish leather costumes approached. One was holding a PaDD.

“When you have a minute we have some questions about tomorrow night’s act.” he said.

Marishka frowned and glanced at him.

“Go away and study your history. I told you I wouldn’t be having this discussion until you did.” she said looking away.
