,snip>Serena nodded, forgetting for a second that Captain Legen couldn’t see her. =^=Acknowledged, Athena.=^= Serena tightened her jaw and her neck felt stiff. She fought the urge to run her fingers through her hair to scrub at the mental cobwebs. This whole damn thing is giving me a headache, she thought darkly. “Okay, so is this just a matter of shoving the Shai back through the anomaly? Can we send a probe through for a peek?”
Lt Cmdr Stone, XO
“Could, but I doubt we would get anything back… unless…” and he spun his bulk in the chair and said “What if both the Athena and the Shai did it at the same time? Two probes into the space at the same time, each with a distinct chroniton signature. Might give us an idea if the rift will allow movement both directions.”
Hammor, Ops
Liam’s words seemed to become a reality when Orvos hailed them. As the XO finished, he could almost feel her frustration that matched his own. This whole thing was nothing, but a mess. Then again that was quantum physics in general. He took a moment to weigh on the probe idea and what they knew.
Finally breaking his thoughts, Liam pushed past the rising headache to speak.
“Though I feel like Hammor might be right, I say we try both. It might reveal something we missed or come back empty. ” Liam held doubt this event was as easy as reversing the two ships and letting the abnormally dissipate.
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
“A negative result or a result of nothing is still a result,” Serena agreed. “I think it’s worth a shot. Do we launch from the Shai, or let them launch in their time?”
Stone, XO
((Don’t forget to cross-post your dialogue to the main sim bridge thread since we are on open comms, which means they hear everything we say, and we hear everything they say.))
((Bump))
“Let’s do it. Science let’s launch another probe into the rift.” stated the captain. =/\=Away team if you can manage to send a message to the Shai bridge, that would be ever so helpful!=/\=
Orvos then turned his attention to the open channel with Kingston. =/\=Janna, we’re hoping to relay a message to the Shai bridge to launch a probe. We’re hoping that we can get some better readings or understanding of our situation that way.=/\= He caught the slight slip up in name usage, but did not remark on it aloud. He simply let it slide as though nothing had happened as he waited for her reply.
-Captain Orvos Legen, CO
In the chatter of the bridge, the away team would also hear Kingston’s reply and Faye’s remarks.
=/\=Understood, Captain,=/\= Janna said, her tone even. =/\=We have some sort of detectable time dilation down here. It seems to be why I appear to be in Counsellor Jannson’s office and yet we can all communicate. The… phenomenon is something I can feel.=/\=
=/\=The obvious solution is to simply turn off the tractor beam, but we don’t know what will happen if we do so with the away team over there, and we might lose our ability to communicate with the Shai’s crew,=/\=Faye said.
~Janna Kingston, CNS & Faye Calloway, CIO
Hammor began tapping entries into the logs, and specifcally asked them to send their current ahip’s time so they could begin to synch their launches.
Hammor, Ops
There was a sudden sound over the comms. =/\=Jannson to bridge-=/\= and then it was cut off. A reply came back to Hammor that it was 13:21. Exactly the same as Athena time.
A probe launched from each ship. As they collided, they froze in place and began to emanate a sickly green light.
-GM
Hammor immediately began trasferring all the probe data he could to the science console while also monitoring the probes themselves.
Hammor, Ops
Reports came back from the probe launched by the Athena that the probe they had launched was moving forward in time at an alarming rate. A message came from the crew of the Shai. It read This is bad.
-GM
As Liam began to analyze the data, comparing it to the current batch. His heart dropped into his stomach slightly causing him to inhale sharply. Immediately, he relayed the information to the rest.
“The probes are moving forward in time at an alarming rate…”
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
This time, the captain’s voice came through in a somewhat strained fashion. =/\=I’m getting a strange sense of things. Feels like…ugh…a tide. A tide that both us and the Shai are caught in. Looking at that probe and the results on our end, it would seem we are being pulled in by this ‘temporal tide’ while the Shai is…being pushed out.=/\=
-Captain Orvos Legen, CO
Hammor cursed and brough the engines fully online. “We’re getting switched. Shai out and Athena in.” His first thought was to try and reverse as hard and as fast as they could, but then a thought occurred to him. “Two objects cant occupy the same space at the same time. The rift is trying to push us out and pull the Athena in… what if we try and go forward? Further into the rift? Before the Athena gets there?”
Hammor, Ops
=/\=Away team, this is Calloway. What would happen if we cut the tractor beam? You’d still have the shuttle to get back and you should probably do so sooner rather than later.=/\=
~Faye Calloway, CIO
“No, Hammor, that’s not going to help. It will cause physical distortions on the ship in motion. However, releasing the beam might slow it down, but it won’t stop. Since the crew isn’t here, but the ship is… it’s possible that whatever happened isn’t done happening.” Liam explained, sharing what he understood so far.
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
As Liam turned to speak to Hammor, there was no one there to speak to. He was gone from the Shai without a word, without notice. Deafening silence came from where he should have been standing.
-GM
Liam blinked in shock. He hadn’t calculated the possibility that one of them might’ve vanished as he looked about, hoping the man had simply walked away from his position.
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
=/\=Away team,=/\= declared Orvos, mustering what discipline he could to put the nausea aside. =/\=We aren’t registering Hammor’s lifesigns and comm signal. What’s happened?=/\=
-Captain Orvos Legen, CO
“He’s gone,” Serena replied. “Vanished. He may be caught in the temporal wake, or sheer. Whatever you want to call it.” She glanced to Liam. “Can we map the temporal fields and ride it out? I doubt we can get the Shai out of here as-is, and we’re dealing with forces a lot bigger than us at the moment.”
=^=Commander Calloway may be on to something. Ops, the tractor beam, in its current use is speeding up this process it would seem. Maybe we can change that by reversing its polarity.=^=
-Captain Orvos Legen, CO
=^=That’s not a terrible idea. Commander Madison?=^=
Lt Cmdr Stone, XO
Liam remained quiet as the XO mentioned Hammor had vanished. He agreed with her theory about what happened, but didn’t say anything. When she addressed him, asking his thoughts the CSO answered honestly.
“I’m not sure. Let me check something.” He said quietly.
His attention turned to check the tricorder he left on. It had detected a flood of chronitons that suddenly vanished. This data matched with what the CO had mentioned earlier about Hammor’s disappearance.
“My tricorder detected a large flood of chronitons that suddenly vanished.”
Considering the CO mentioned the tractor beam, Liam answered in an even voice.
“It’s possible that reversing the polarity will slow it down.”
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
A message appeared on the Ops station. Your ops chief is here with us.
-GM
Liam heard the subtle chime of the Ops station. He pulled the message up on his own console and read it.
“It seems that Hammor is currently on the Shai, with their crew.”
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
“I suppose that’s a positive. Acknowledge them.” She shook her head and tossed her hands up. Captain Orvos’ orders came over the comm and, peering over Liam’s shoulder, she saw the tractor beam polarity reverse. After a few moments the anomaly began to change. Good? She hoped so.
For the moment there was nothing she could do but shut up and get out of the way. Let her crew work.
Stone, XO
=/\=Keep us posted from your end,=/\= Calloway said, seemingly fine on the outside. =/\=We’ll keep an eye on the connection. If the Shai’s crew has any ideas on how to sever the connection but have the right people in the right time, we’re open to suggestions.=/\=
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Liam used the same method that Hammor did to relay all that had been said to him. Including their efforts on this end in hopes it might improve their efforts to resolve this phenomenon.
Acknowledged. Currently, we’ve reversed the tractor beam’s polarity and Hammor disappeared shortly after. We’re currently open to any idea you might have to sever this connection.
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
Temporal mechanics wasn’t exactly been my favorite subject in the academy. Thankfully, I’ve never had to deal with it in the wild until now. Maybe that’s a problem I should brush up on. Stone shook her head at the thought. She drummed her fingers on head rest of the Ops chair behind Liam in a unconscious fidget. For the moment, all she could do is watch over his shoulder. She resisted the urge to chew on a nail with her other hand. Instead, she shoved her hand into her pocket.
Pushing back from the chair drifted away to starboard, smoothing her palms against her uniform. Deep breath. She held it for a moment then let it out, puffing her cheeks in the process. Turning along she meandered aft, peering at each of the stations as she went. She took them in casually and her mind whirled over the events thus far, and how quickly it had all gone wrong. Madison would notify her when something came up. For the moment she needed to take in other things, to move, to think.
Lt Cmdr Stone, XO
A reply from Hammor arrived This is Hammor. I am on the Shai. Understood polarity reversal. Will try to assist from this side.
-GM
Keep us updated over your progress. Liam typed than sighed, monitoring any changes.
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.
Serena paced back and forth across the bridge, reviewing the information, and examining possibilities, and either keeping or discarding them. What else could she do i nthe interim?
((Update on the rift/distortion and it’s activity? Liam started monitoring it now that the tractor beam polarity was reversed, for any changes, including size, harmonics, polarities, particle emissions…))
Stone, XO
Looking more closely at the phenomenon, one might describe the chronitons they first observed as rather resembling the event horizon of a black hole. And the distortion got stronger the closer in one got.
-GM
((Right. Proximity is understood. We’ve reversed the polarity of the tractor beam punching into/through the rift, in an attempt to alter (lessen) the effects, since using a tractor beam in the first place seemed to exacerbate the problem. What is the effect? Is it having the desired effect? is it making things worse? We’re not changing positions, but attempting to affect the actual anomaly. Not our relative position to it.
Sam H ))
((The short version is that you’re contending with the fact that someone from the Athena is in the future and someone from the future is on the Athena. What mitigating effects reversing the polarity of the tractor beam had, the whole situation got worse and more complicated when people started jumping around in time. The action you took is having its desired effect however having members of each crew on the other ship is having its own effect. Remember that you’re not just contending with physical proximity but also movements in time. The ships are “moving” such that they’ll be exchanged in time.))
-sage
“It’s having the desired effect, but it’s not a solution. We need to figure out how to get everyone back to their own timeline. I’m going to check with Hammor to see if he’s the only one out of place.” Liam stated as he typed a message to Hammor. He didn’t recall hearing about any Shai members on the Athena, but then again their fellow officer just recently disappeared.
Hammor, is anyone from the Shai’s crew missing?
The man had an idea, but he waited to hear from Hammor.
