Next to enter the bar was the tall glass of kali-fal that was Ky’Laria. Frankly bored from an entire day of moving from visitor lounge to crew lounge to office lobby, with no answers to her Athena-related questions forthcoming, she had asked a passing human about a place to distract oneself. The contradiction in terms inherent to this establishment’s name - if taking the human’s word for it - had amused her, and for no other reason, she had opted to come. Though now that she was here, it pleased her ears that the place seemed well-insulated from the discord of dozens, sometimes hundreds of people all talking about different things, assailing her ears all day. Also, in establishments such as these, inhibitions were diluted, and if one was fortunate, sometimes blood ran hot. Never a bad time, in Ky’Laria’s estimation…

She was still garbed in the uniform of her homeland’s Fleets, and at a glance, even the ignorant observer could guess that hers was a star navy first, long before an exploratory organization. Pistol holsters - akimbo, but unfilled - adorned the hips of a carbon-grey suit which caught points of light as it clung, paint-like to her form. The next layer was formed by an ensemble of semi-rigid ceramo-plastic plates and strips, laid in patterns to protect those parts of the body where mobility could be traded for protection. Her shoulders were covered with formed pads, small enough to stay out of the way but large enough to each display a pair of broad golden metal bars, trimmed with thin piping in bright chrome. They stood out, small bits of pomp and circumstance on an otherwise functional and perhaps stealthy get-up.

Ky’Laria surveyed the room with featureless, quicksilver eyes, resting her hands on the openings of her holsters as she learned what she could from a glance. Noteworthy to her were the only three people she had yet seen wearing so much leather that day, at a table; and the… woman, making a poor attempt at subtle observation. Or, perhaps an excellent success of non-subtle observation. Human? No, the vitals weren’t right. This one felt like… most of a Trill. This one must have lacked the symbiotic organism carried by the handful of Trill she had yet met. The mundane made interesting by circumstance.

She bore an aloof, somewhat aristocratic air as she strode to the bar counter, taking position three stools to the left of the Trill and keeping unseen tabs on all around her. She unclipped a hand terminal from a utility point on her uniform and held it out to the bartender. “Do you have a replicator that can accept this pattern?” she queried flatly.

The bartender blinked a few times at the small holographic image which slowly twirled atop the display of the odd terminal in Ky’Laria’s hand. “N– I don’t think it can interface with your terminal, lady,” he replied with a shake of his head, trying not to appear daunted by this stranger’s forceful personality. Ky’Laria sighed with disappointment and thumbed the power control on the terminal. “Water,” she said, bringing the pad back to its mounting point on her person.

-Squadron Sub-Admiral Ky’Laria (Alien Bigshot)

As Ky’Laria had entered and then walked over to the bar, Viyara had shifted her sitting position once more. She had never met anyone who looked like … her? This person certainly appeared female, but you never knew and she tried not to make assumptions. Yet she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t utterly intrigued and fascinated by this person. Whoever they were. So while making sure to keep the three people at the table in sight, she also kept an eye on the newcomer.

Ky’Laria, feeling the Trill’s eyes on her, watched back as she strode by; with no pupils to tell a humanoid mind where her eyes were looking, however, it may have been difficult for an observer to know it.

The footsteps of the next patron to enter the bar were barely audible. Most barely even noticed the being who entered, despite the Starfleet blues she wore. Specially tailored Starfleet blues, to fit a form barely over two and a half feet tall. One might think that Puss in Boots had jumped out of the fairy tale, for that was the first impression this being gave, although her fur was grey instead of the orange tabby of the character’s usual portrayal. Either that, or someone had severely shrunken a Caitian.

There was one individual who did notice her, the bartender, as the new arrival leaped from the floor onto a stool right next to the heavily-geared alien. “I will have a water as well,” she spoke. Her voice was soft, feminine, and had a low rumble to it. A purring echo.

And yet another species I haven’t met yet, Viyara thought as the short feline appeared in her line of vision. A crooked smile played across her face as she watched the officer.

“I’ll have to see your I.D., kid. This is a bar. Not really a place for…” the bartender squinted at her. “Children.”

“I am not a child, I am Ensign Tikka, soon to be of the USS Athena,” the young officer explained, looking excited. Her eyes were wide, flicking around to look here and there with curiosity. She did show her ID though.

The man stared at the ID for way too long before finally handing it back. “It says you were born in 2386.”

Ky’Laria glanced up from the counter at the bartender, giving him a look which was both amused at and slightly pitying the man. “First deep space job?” she asked rhetorically, a tiny smile on her lips. The barkeep’s face went a bit warm with silent embarrassment, and he slid the Kuras her cool glass of water.

At the mention of the Athena, Viyara’s became even more interested in the latest arrival. Judging by the the colour of her uniform, the officer was either in medical or science, which meant that they might very well be colleauges. Without giving it any thought, stood up and moved over to Ky’Laria and Tikka. Leaning against the bar with her hip, her right elbow resting on the smooth surface, she leaned towards Tikka and asked, “So you’ll be joining the Athena?” Out of the corner of her eye, she was still keeping the party of three in sight, yet, her main focus right now was on the two people in front of her, the one in the Starfleet uniform in particular.

Tikka looked to the Trill and took in the sight of Nazeen, her blue eyes taking in every detail. “Ah, yes. I am joining the Athena. It is my first assignment, since I just graduated from the Academy. The Academy is such an exciting place to be but I’m also excited to be here, about to be actually on a ship as an assignment!!” She hopped up on her chair, balancing on her toes with her legs bent instead of sitting properly. She looked at the Bartender, her energy still present in ample amounts.

“Yes. And that makes me an adult. I am a Raka. Look me up in your little database. Or whatever you have. Ten Earth years is adulthood for my species. Not all species age at the same rate, you know.”

Ky’Laria chuckled audibly at Tikka’s last remark, through a long sip of her drink. It was so true as to be funny.

She then turned back to the Trill. “Are you going to be joining the Athena too? What is your name? What department are you in?”

  • Ensign Tikka

“Yes, I am,” Viyara replied with a twinkle in her differently coloured eyes. “Viyara Nazeen. I’m a scientist.” Instead of elaborating more about herself, she asked, “So your first assignment, ey? Congratulations! What department are you in? Medical or science as well? And what’s your area of expertise?” While she had come here in the hope to find out something about the Athena’s whereabouts, she was genuinely interested to find out the answers to the questions she’d just asked.

The Kuras simply listened over another sip of water as the two spoke. If there were three officers of Athena’s sciences complement here… how many more holes were there in the staff while they were trapped on the wrong end of some nefarious plot - and of a mysterious wormhole? The double shifts among the lab supervisors and subdepartment heads must have been something to behold!

She turned slightly, shifting from her front to her side and leaning an elbow on the counter, signalling an interest in Viyara and Tikka’s discourse.

-Ky’Laria (Actually Part of The Crew But shh Don’t Tell)

“Oh, I am also a science officer!” Tikka exclaimed cheerfully, finally managing to sit down again after the bartender finally gave her the water she’d asked for. “I do not have a particular field of expertise within Starfleet, although my favorite study is Chemistry. I was placed aboard the Athena as a research assistant. My main job will be to help others with their research!”

Tikka, an overexcited ensign
