The Kuras simply listened over another sip of water as the two spoke. If there were three officers of Athena’s sciences complement here… how many more holes were there in the staff while they were trapped on the wrong end of some nefarious plot - and of a mysterious wormhole? The double shifts among the lab supervisors and subdepartment heads must have been something to behold!

She turned slightly, shifting from her front to her side and leaning an elbow on the counter, signalling an interest in Viyara and Tikka’s discourse.

-Ky’Laria (Actually Part of The Crew But shh Don’t Tell)

“Oh, I am also a science officer!” Tikka exclaimed cheerfully, finally managing to sit down again after the bartender finally gave her the water she’d asked for. “I do not have a particular field of expertise within Starfleet, although my favorite study is Chemistry. I was placed aboard the Athena as a research assistant. My main job will be to help others with their research!”

Tikka, an overexcited ensign

“Chemistry? Good choice,” Viyara said with a mischievous smile. “My major was in biochemistry.” She then turned her head and tilted it slightly backwards to look at the bartender and asked, “Can I get a gin tonic?”

Viyara’s mention of biochemistry had piqued Ky’Laria’s hearing, and she had already turned to receive the Trill’s attention by the time it was paid.

Turning her focus back to the two people next to her, Ky’Laria in particular, she asked bluntly, “Who are you? And what brings you here?” There was more she wanted to ask both of them, but she had learned over time that it was better to ask one or two questions at a time instead of all of them at once. At least if you wanted (proper) answers to all of them. Yet while waiting for her reply, she let her eyes wander over every inch of her body.

“I am Ky’Laria,” she replied, dispensing with either Starfleet or her native rank for the moment. A small smile grew with calculated slowness on her features as she added, “I may have come here to be your master.” That, of course, depended entirely on whether Athena’s science department was in need of her own expertise in biochemistry; there was at least as much chance of being employed among the physics disciplines, given her Academy education.

“Have you now?” Viyara ask with a mischievous and coquettish smile. While she suspected that that comment was entirely work related, her mind was wandering in a rather different direction. Whoever this person was, her curiosity was definitely peaked in more than one way.

Ky’Laria offered no spoken response. Instead, she reached for her glass of water and essentially drank it at Viyara. Gazing over the rim of the glass, she made sure to accidentally knock it against an incisor - retracted but still visibly longer and pointed - against the inside with an audible tink.

Fangs, interesting, Viyara mused. Though Ky’Laria wasn’t by far the first person with sharp, pointy teeth to cross her path. Reaching for her drink, that the bartender had just pushed towards her, she raised her glass to her and took a sip.

She had gone back to her room, showered and taken a moment to just breathe. Her short time with Ky’Larria before meeting with the Commodore had left her a little off balance. Being scared to the point she couldn’t even run, had her confused. How could someone elicit such a response from her in such a short time? And for no real reason?

Stress… That’s what it was. She had been hunting for the Athena for three days, hardly sleeping, and eating just enough to keep her going. She was stressed. Well, she had a purpose now. She was freshly showered, her hair in a single braid down her back, as she walked into the bar. First things first she told herself and headed for the bar. Not one for heavy drinks, she simply ordered a glass of wine and moved to a vacant spot at the bar. When she could get the bartender’s attention, she would work around to asking what she needed to.

She had been so set on getting to the bar and a drink, she didn’t realize that ten feet away, Ky was busy speaking with a couple others and already working on their assignment.

The Kuras’ voice would likely find Karina’s ear. Ky’Laria continued to engage with the Trill woman for now, though she had carefully noted Karina’s entrance and watched her with the literal corner of her silvery, compound eye.

“And you?” Ky’Laria asked, conspicuously not asking for names that she’d already overheard. “Were you surprised to learn that your ship had left without you?”

-Ky’Laria (On The Hunt but in How Many Ways?)

Taking a sip of her drink, Viyara took a moment to reply. “Isn’t it more that they haven’t returned from their last mission?” she asked instead. “And well, delays happen and missions sometimes take longer than anticipated.” She shrugged and let her finger wander around the rim of her glass. She knew by now that that wasn’t exactly the case, since Starfleet seemed to have no idea where the Athena was. But she wasn’t going to reveal everything she knew and suspected. Locking her eyes with Ky’Laria’s she added, “Why are you so interested in the Athena?”

This one was fun… It was as though Viyara had the carefree confidence of a Kuras, though so far markedly lacking the hunting instinct as far as Ky’Laria could tell. Unwaveringly, she replied, “That interest is strictly professional.”

-Ky’Laria (Possible Venus Trill Trap)

Leaning slightly forward and raising one eyebrow, she simply asked, “Why?” She didn’t look like Starfleet, but then again neither did she herself, especially not right now. What did she know about the Athena and her current whereabouts? she wondered, while her she looked Ky’Laria deep into the eyes, apparently just as undisturbed by the lack of distinctive irises/pupils as by her pointed incisors.

The completely oblivious Tikka, sitting between the two women, looked from one to the other with an excited expression. “You’re both going to be on the Athena too? Really?? Wow. This is so, exciting, meeting two of my future co-workers at the same time!!” The little Raka grabbed her drink and gulped down a mouthful.

Viyara didn’t say anything in reply to Tikka’s questions, but simply nodded while wondering how Ky’Laria would reply. So far she hadn’t exactly said that she was going to be part of the Athena, or had she? Doubt started to slowly rise up inside her. Had she missed something? But she was quickly able to push those feelings aside. Even if she had, it was of no real consequences right now, but she would pay even closer attention to the things both of them were saying. And to their body language.

Karina glanced over and saw Ky’Laria. The blush rose on her cheeks and she turned back to her drink. Taking a longer than usual draw, she waited and smiled as the bartender came closer. “Seems there is a lot of talk of the Athena ship missing? What’s that all about?” In civilian clothes, her comm badge hidden under a wide gold band over her upper left arm sleeve, she looked, for all that night, like just another person enjoying a drink off duty.

In the back of her mind, she wondered if Ky was scaring the women beside her the way she had been scared in the break room earlier that day. Despite the fear, the excitement rose in her at the memory.
