((Takes place a couple weeks after returning to proper time and space and Karina coming back aboard))

She sat in her quarters and sighed again. This was twice that ‘time’ had stolen her ship and threatened the lives of those she had come to care about as family. On the station, realizing the Athena may never come back, Karina had mourned and wept. The Medical Chief, Grey, had been nearer and dearer to her heart than most. And here she had almost lost him twice. It galled her that she hadn’t gotten to know him and pluck his head for knowledge like she had promised after the last fiasco.

Getting up and tapping the console on her desk, she found out where the Doctor was. Realizing it was after dinner time, she had a feeling that knotted her gut, that if she didn’t seek him out tonight, she would push it off again. And she doubted Fate would grant her a third chance.

She took off for his location wearing her black ankle boots, deep green leggings and a slightly lighter green tunic top that came down to her hips in the front and swept down and back to cover her bottom in the back. She was freshly showered so her hair was brushed out but still damp and she wore no makeup, no jewelry. She hadn’t ‘planned’ to leave her room. But if anything, she had learned to start listening to her gut. And this time, she was going to.

A dark shadow materialized on her left and matched her stride. “Good to see you back Ensign Niles, you’re looking very “purposeful” this evening”.

Stark Nightstalker CIO

Stark’s arrival had startled Karina. “Thank you Commander,” she smiled. “It’s good to be back. I’m actually heading to the the Medical Chief. How is your evening going?” She slowed her pace slightly to be polite as she kept on her way.

Nightstalker would be aware that the Medical Chief was most likely eating his supper in the Mess at this hour. His inquisitiveness would also be aware he usually sat near the viewport in the far corner.

“As well as can be expected,” Stark said with a wan smile, “A ship of this size makes keeping your paw on the pulse extremely difficult, I used to meet people at the shuttle bay but these days I have to run myself ragged all over the show just to track down the newbies”.

“If you’re looking for Dr. Grey, usually at this time he eats supper in the Mess, ” Stark raised an eyebrow, “Intent on snagging the one who got away?”.

Karina looked away down the hall. “I don’t know what you mean,” but she blushed clear to her toes. She had been sure no one had noticed. Grey wasn’t interested, she was pretty sure, so she hadn’t pursued it.

“Thank you for the info on the Doc, though. I appreciate it.” She smiled back but didn’t meet his eyes again. “Sorry you have to trudge around looking for folks all the time.” She laughed. “If you ever need me, let me know. I’ll be happy to meet you in the shuttle bay. How’s that?” She was trying to change the subject, but now he had turned her mind even more on the focus of her walk this evening.

Stark smiled, “I appreciate that, and if you ever want some upskilling in the arts of keeping a poker face I’d be more than happy to teach you,” he paused and for a brief moment his hard dark eyes softened, “On second thought, don’t change, you’re great just the way you are”.

With a wave of his tail, he disappeared down a nearby Jeffries tube.

As he disappeared, she blushed again. It was good to be home again. On the station, hearing and seeing the ship was ‘gone’ had been a punch to her gut she wasn’t sure she’d get past. But in searching for the ship she had made new friends. And now, seeing them all together, old and new… it was worth it. Well, maybe just this once.

She continued on till she reached the mess. Looking around, she saw the Doc. Getting herself a drink of juice from the replicator, she headed for him. As she approached, a smile lit her fac. “Evening, Doc… have you got a sec? If I’m not intruding, I mean.”

Ben didn’t look up at first, his attention had been wholly invested in his meal; A cooked salmon with some vegetables on the side. A glass of white wine and an accompanying bottle. As always he’d noticed the slight shift as a new person entered the room, most of the smells were, of course, familiar to him but he was admittedly surprised to notice Karina Niles. He carefully lowered his utensils and turned his head to face his former subordinate “Doctor Niles, please” He smiled politely and pointed to the opposite seat. He grabbed his glass and brought it to his lips “Care for a drink?” He offered before taking a small sip.

Ben Grey

Karina smiled and nodded. “I’d like that. I’ll get a glass.”

A moment later she sat down across from him and set the glass between them. “I know I have an official re check in with you tomorrow, but I was hoping to speak personally with you this evening. It’s nothing serious,” she smiled. “I promise. I just…” she sighed. “I don’t know, why, actually.” She laughed but it was uncomfortable. “I wanted to ask you if you had recommendation on how I go about getting my PhD. I know I’m a doctor by Academy standards. And I only had a couple years left before I got it in the civilian sector. I just… I guess I just want to finish it. I need to know more. The last couple missions have shown me I don’t have the trauma training I should have for being on this ship.” She shrugged. “I guess I’m asking if you’ll be my mentor and help me out. I just don’t know how to go about it.”

She bit her lip realizing she had rambled on like a lunatic. She hadn’t seen the man in months, and her first time in his presence she blathers on like some bug eyed Academy recruit still green behind the ears.

Benjamin allowed her to ramble on for a moment, a small smile on his lips. He slowly swirled the wine in his glass and leaned back in his chair, crossing his thin legs. After she stopped he took another sip “Hi Doctor Grey, how are you, how have you been? Oh just fine, delivered a baby, my EMH tried to kill my patients the usual” He said in a teasing tone, the slightly neurotic junior Doctor had a way of getting straight to the point that was for sure. He raised his right hand and shook his head “I’m only joking. I’d be honored to help you with that” He resumed the swirling of his drink “What were you studying for your Ph.D.? It’s not all doctors who go for that as well as an MD”

Dr. Benjamin

Realizing she had forgotten the niceties, she blushed and shook her head. “I’m sorry, Doctor Grey. I am glad you guys made it back. And I hope you’ll tell me what happened sometime.” She laughed. “And tell me why your EMHs tried to kill your patients.” She took a moment and smiled softer. “Are you ‘really’ ok? I mean, I know I was a basket case when I came back and you guys were gone.” She really did care for the man and it seemed to manifest itself from her as a way of skipping over checking on him entirely lest it become obvious she was asking on more than a mere professional/coworker level.
