“I would check those orders again later, just to be sure.” Markus’ mouth curled upward, as Isaac’s eyes darted back towards him, “You know how headquarters like to change their mind.”

If only “headquarters” had done so before the first transport or, more generously, before the first Starbase. Isaac held out one of the warm cups in his hand to the slender man waiting on a bench.

“Ship’s gone,” Lane said.

“What.”

“What’s this?” Lane looked up from the PaDD in his hands at the drink. “The USS Athena has gone missing.”

“Helpful.” Isaac stared flatly back. “Coffee. You like it. Give me that screen.”

The doctor only hummed, but accepted the beverage. The PaDD was snatched easily from his other hand so he peeled off the lid for inspection. It had a pleasant smell and Lane found he liked the dark color, but he had no interest in the damage of his mouth with its current temperature. He stared at it, letting the background of the Starbase engulf his absent attention.

“Ship’s gone,” Isaac boggled, having taken his own seat on the bench to read.

West, The Undercaffeinated

Lane didn’t respond.

Doctor Grauagen

They would not move if Lane didn’t. West had his Starfleet papers, but that did not make him versed in it. With the Athena indisposed, the Quartermaster would be the next best check.

Lane drank his, by now appropriately cooled, coffee and stood; it was… fine. With a glance at the nearby surroundings, he walked off knowing that West would get up and follow. It was the man’s job, after all.

Doctor Grauagen

OOC Want to get roped in on some mayhem or are you happy to give us some background without a touch of conspiracy? :-) Ian

OOC: So sorry. I 100% lost track of the days. I’m happy for both. I love mayhem and character torture, and I’ll get the re-written profiles up tomorrow no problem. -Crissy

OOC :-) I’ll leave you to get settled in a bit more, no rush, but I have a tendency to insert myself and the characters I control into everything just for a bit of character torture so be warned haha Ian

OOC: Always feel free. As mentioned, I love me some character torture ;D I’m good to get going whenever now! -Crissy

IC:
The starbase seemed familiar, but all of space would - almost half of Lane’s conscious life had been within Starfleet and its architecture - and he had very well checked the maps before the transport had docked. Still, he looked as he walked. The places tucked into every nook, the people who had their routines, the different pieces coming together into the same pattern. Starbases, ships, made alive.

A young Asian woman popped out of a nearby turbolift, moved into his vicinity, looked around hurriedly, saw him, and hurried over. “Hi” she said, out of breath.

Junior Gamemaster Conspiracy Theorist.

The man behind the doctor raised his attention briefly from the PaDD at her quick movements and then returned to his reading, weight already shifting to orbit around Lane’s sudden stop with the ease of familiarity.

Lane looked at her passively, “Hello.”

Doctor Grauagen

“Mind if I sit?” she said gesturing to an empty chair next to him.

Junior Gamemaster Conspiracy Theorist

OOC: Well, I’ve set a regular calendar reminder now. -Crissy

IC:
Lane looked at the chair and then back towards the woman. “You don’t need my permission,” he said, mild and almost absent in attention. “I’m sorry, but do you know me?”

Doctor Grauagen

“Indeed I do, she said with a slight smile, “Or perhaps it’s better to say I know “a” you.”

Junior Gamemaster Conspiracy Theorist

OOC Note for Anthony, Ky’Laria will find the turbolift comes out just opposite this pair and the asian woman is the one you’re looking for.

Lane seemed unsurprised or, more accurately, unanything at the answer and only hummed in acknowledgement. West had furrowed his brow at her answer, tucking the PaDD away into a pocket, but only gave Lane the scrutiny.

He should smile, he knew, a Duchenne that included his orbicularis oculi for genuity. Speech involved more than just words, and yet, Lane found his body unwilling. “Tell me about him?” he asked instead.

Doctor Grauagen

Ky’Laria opened her eyes just as the slowing lift car came to a halt. Her gaze threatened to bore through the doors in the brief instant before they parted. As if in apology for taking so long, they yielded a view that she had honestly not been expecting. The prey of the day, easily within rushing distance! But her eye also caught the familiar sight of her unlikely partner, delivered by another set of parting doors.

Karina arrived on the same deck but on the opposite side than Ky’Larria. She was scanning the crowd for both the O’Brien look-alike as well as the Officer she had met just a few hours ago. It seemed like ages, already, and her body remembered the fear and elation at the woman’s nearness. A shiver ran down her spine and she mentally and physically shook herself to be free of it. Later she thought to herself. Right now they had imposters and a ship to find.

Ky’Laria’s initial impulse to go in for the– er, arrest, was stymied by the arrival of Karina. She hadn’t known where the Kuras was going- even Ky’Laria hadn’t known in the moment when took off after her ‘person of interest’ - but had arrived here all the same. This meant that the doctor had new information, and that was as much a tool as speed, strength or venom. So, the instantaneous decision was made to exit the lift in a wholly non-urgent manner and move as expediently as due care allowed so as not to draw the attention of her quarry. Instinct made its complaint heard loudly within her, but she swallowed deeply and figuratively gulped it down too.

Looking deeper at the crowds, her view got the back of the O’Brien doppelganger so she missed that. But the long legged Kuran across the deck wasn’t so easily missed. A smile lit her face and she moved to skirt the entire crowd to get to Ky, She had to let her know what was going on.

Ever graceful in motion, Ky’Laria scanned the surroundings, noting her target’s potential routes of egress. She listened for the woman’s voice, her breath sounds, her heartbeat; anything which she could use as a ‘signature’ to track her movements through the room, if she should choose to make any. As Karina approached, she eyed the doctor expectantly.

-Ky’Laria (Hunter, Interrupted)

Karina’s heart skipped a beat then raced as Ky’Laria got nearer. True, they hardly knew one another, but the doctor’s fight or flight knew a predator when it met one. It was nice to know she recognized that. What was confusing was her body not telling her to run.

“Ma’am…” she said as she approached. “I am glad to see you are well. There’s been a problem.” She glanced at the ‘target’ and moved to sit at the closest table so they were blending in and not ‘hovering’. But she made sure both her and Ky had line of site on the ‘O’Brien’ duplicate. “The man we saw who told us to find her,” she nodded to O’Brien, “wasn’t the real Stone.” She let the words sink into the Kuras’ mind.
