The Starbase was crowded. Way too crowded. Most of the people around Ensign Juvri Dei were other Starfleet officers, either stationed at the Starbase, on a temporary shore leave, or doing just what she was: transferring ships.

Juvri sensed too many emotions around her. Nervousness. Anxiety. Anger. Excitement. Joy. Love. She wished they’d go away. There were more people here than Juvri had been around since the Academy. Focus on your goal, she thought.

But she could not focus. Instead, she found herself flashing back to the Academy.

Juvri’s teacher in one of the science classes she’d had to take (turns out, to understand how phasers work, you need to know a little science. Not that she was a fan of phasers much.), had become a sort of mentor to her.

Some of his lessons seemed very applicable right now.

She’d had a few- “Hey, watch where you’re going!” said the Ensign, shooting her an irritated glare as he dove out of her way. Of course, Juvri didn’t just see that he was annoyed. She felt it, much to her discomfort. “S-sorry!” She shouted after him, but he’d already disappeared into the bustling crowd of people.

But she forgot the incident quickly, once she saw who she was looking for: A pilot. Specifically, the pilot that would fly her to rendezvous with the USS Athena. That idea made her nervous. A new ship. A fresh start. A chance to be someone else. To be.... fantastic. Or awful. She hoped for the former.

“Ensign Dei?” The pilot asked as she approached. His tone implied that he did not believe she was the security officer he was looking for. And to be honest, she wouldn’t believe she were a security officer, either, if she were looking at herself. Standing at 5‘5’‘ with a thin frame and a timid stance, Juvri knew she hardly looked like she’d be much good in a fight.

And honestly, in a hand-to-hand fight she was absolutely useless. But she’d been very good with phasers in the academy. An accurate, precise, shot. Of course, she very desperately hoped that was a skill she never had to use. She was more a fan of the diplomatic approach. To her, words could solve anything long before phasers could.

“That’s me,” Juvri replied to the pilot. “Alright then,” said he, “You ready to meet up with your new ship?”

Juvri had only been told about the Athena’s current predicament near the end of her arrival flight. Rather than meet up with the Athena, she was to meet up with some of the ship’s crew, on a Starbase - Starbase 157. The idea of transferring to another base wasn’t overly appealing, but there was nothing to be done, so she figured she would just have to go with it.

Before long, Juvri had arrived at the base. She did not have many things with her; just one bag. For her, that was plenty well enough.

It couldn’t be too hard to find another crew member, could it? Now where would Starfleet officers like to hang out…? She began to wander around the base, looking for the right sort of place.

It didn’t take particularly long for Juvri to find a Starfleet officer in her wanderings. Just outside what looked like a bar of some sort, a figure stood, leaning against the wall and fiddling with some soft of wrist-mounted computer. Upon noticing the individual, there were three things Juvri would notice.

The first thing that she would notice about this individual was that their mind was not leaking emotions like most humanoid minds did. The second thing was that they wore Starfleet Blue. The third thing was that the individual was a three foot tall cat person. Like a Caitian, but super short. Upon seeing the Security Ensign approaching, said individual would hop away from the wall and traipse over, a cheerful smile on their face. “Hello!! Are you Juvri? I got a message saying there was another one coming aboard. I think there are probably about five or six of us waiting on the Starbase now!” There were no external signs as to the Science Ensign’s gender, but at least the voice gave off a more feminine vibe. “I’m Ensign Tikka, I’m so happy to meet you!”

Tikka had, indeed, got a message about yet another Ensign arriving to the Starbase on their way to Athena. She’d actually been reading it when the yellow of Juvri’s uniform had caught her eye.

  • Tikka

Juvri was rather relieved that the odd little cat person did not give off any emotions. In fact, she hardly realized that it was a strange occurrence. She vaguely thought, huh, first person since I was thirteen I don’t have to sense their feelings. But the thought passed quickly as the person began talking. “Yes- Yeah, I’m Juvri. Call me Ju, if you like.”

Well, she’d been looking for someone else from the Athena. Apparently, they’d found her. And, there were several others, as well. Juvri wasn’t sure whether that made her happy or not. The idea of waiting around with one other seemed doable. But six? Well, it wasn’t like they’d be around each other every waking moment. Tikka seemed nice enough, too, and it relaxed her just a tad, how easy-going and enthusiastic the smaller Ensign was. “Nice to meet you, too, by the way. So, there’s that many officers just waiting around for the ship to show up?” She asked, frowning. Would they be doing nothing while they waited? What if there was another security officer? Maybe Ju could ask them for pointers.

“It’s been gone for a while,” the small officer replied, “And command keeps sending us over without thinking about whether the ship has gotten back yet. It kinda vanished into thin air, or so I hear. It was supposed to be here two days ago, but as you can tell… It isn’t here. I’ve been here about a day waiting. I hope it shows up soon. I’m a research assistant, there are two other science officers and… I think a doctor? So, are you engineering?” She gestured to the uniform colours, which she knew to be either Engineering or Security, but this woman was far to slight to be security, right?

  • Ens. Tikka

“They must’ve expected it to be here by now. If it were, it wouldn’t be a problem to keep sending people, I’d assume,” Juvri responded. She wasn’t surprised about Tikka’s assumption, that she would be Engineering, and it did not bother her. She noted as well that no, there were no other security officers here at the base. Oh, well, she thought, with an internal shrug. “No, Security,” she answered, to Tikka’s question. Many assumed that Security was about being a fighter and good at using phasers, but there was much more to the job, and it was really the other parts she excelled at. “So, you’re a research assistant? That must be interesting.” she commented.

Tikka seemed to take the fact that Dei was in security in stride. One ear flicked slightly. “Yeah, I’m really excited! I’m not really smart enough to do my own research. I wouldn’t know what to research,” she admitted with a wry smile. “But I am super excited to help other people with their research. I get to learn about everyone’s research, and make sure things don’t die when they’re doing other duties.”

Ens. Tikka

“Oh, I’m sure you’d be great,” Juvri said with a smile. “But that sounds good, too.” To her, being a research assistant sounded… well, boring. But she did not let that show on her face. She thought it seemed rude, to let it be known that she thought that job would be boring. Loosening her grip on her one bag a little as she relaxed, she changed the topic. “So, the starbase. Very busy?” She asked, assuming that since Tikka had already been here longer than she had, Tikka might know the answer to that question.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Uh, not really,” Tikka replied with a slight shrug. “I mean, there’s a lot of people here so yeah, in that regard they are busy, but I haven’t been. It’s mostly been just kinda hanging around and waiting for me. There was a little bit of stuff going on yesterday when I met everyone - a chase, I think? It was confusing and I wasn’t really paying attention, I’ll be honest.”

  • Ens. Tikka

Well, that’s too bad, Juvri thought. At least if there was something going on, waiting would be easier. Instead, she’d likely be sitting around, worrying about actually boarding the ship, when it got there. “A chase, huh?” She said, frowning. “That sounds.. interesting, I guess.” Deciding to change the subject, she asked, “So what do you like to do to pass the time? Got a favorite book or anything?”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Same as usual, I guess. I’ve been doing a lot of reading since I graduated, and lots of doodling too. I’m hoping to set up a kinda game night for anyone who wants to join once we get to the Athena. Like, every friday night or something a bunch of people can hang out in one of the rec rooms and play board games and stuff? I dunno. I have a lot of plans!!” Tikka was excited to be able to talk to someone about her plans, things she had been mulling over in her time on the station.

  • Ens. Tikka

“A game night for everyone? That sounds nice.” Juvri said smiling. She was unsure whether she would end up going, just because she tended to chicken out of going to social events. But still, it was nice someone was trying to organize those types of events. It made the place seem friendlier. Since Tikka seemed rather excited about the idea, she asked, “What kind of games were you thinking of playing?”
