SNIP

Ben didn’t look up at first, his attention had been wholly invested in his meal; A cooked salmon with some vegetables on the side. A glass of white wine and an accompanying bottle. As always he’d noticed the slight shift as a new person entered the room, most of the smells were, of course, familiar to him but he was admittedly surprised to notice Karina Niles. He carefully lowered his utensils and turned his head to face his former subordinate “Doctor Niles, please” He smiled politely and pointed to the opposite seat. He grabbed his glass and brought it to his lips “Care for a drink?” He offered before taking a small sip.

Ben Grey

Karina smiled and nodded. “I’d like that. I’ll get a glass.”

A moment later she sat down across from him and set the glass between them. “I know I have an official re check in with you tomorrow, but I was hoping to speak personally with you this evening. It’s nothing serious,” she smiled. “I promise. I just…” she sighed. “I don’t know, why, actually.” She laughed but it was uncomfortable. “I wanted to ask you if you had recommendation on how I go about getting my PhD. I know I’m a doctor by Academy standards. And I only had a couple years left before I got it in the civilian sector. I just… I guess I just want to finish it. I need to know more. The last couple missions have shown me I don’t have the trauma training I should have for being on this ship.” She shrugged. “I guess I’m asking if you’ll be my mentor and help me out. I just don’t know how to go about it.”

She bit her lip realizing she had rambled on like a lunatic. She hadn’t seen the man in months, and her first time in his presence she blathers on like some bug eyed Academy recruit still green behind the ears.

Benjamin allowed her to ramble on for a moment, a small smile on his lips. He slowly swirled the wine in his glass and leaned back in his chair, crossing his thin legs. After she stopped he took another sip “Hi Doctor Grey, how are you, how have you been? Oh just fine, delivered a baby, my EMH tried to kill my patients the usual” He said in a teasing tone, the slightly neurotic junior Doctor had a way of getting straight to the point that was for sure. He raised his right hand and shook his head “I’m only joking. I’d be honored to help you with that” He resumed the swirling of his drink “What were you studying for your Ph.D.? It’s not all doctors who go for that as well as an MD”

Dr. Benjamin

Realizing she had forgotten the niceties, she blushed and shook her head. “I’m sorry, Doctor Grey. I am glad you guys made it back. And I hope you’ll tell me what happened sometime.” She laughed. “And tell me why your EMHs tried to kill your patients.” She took a moment and smiled softer. “Are you ‘really’ ok? I mean, I know I was a basket case when I came back and you guys were gone.” She really did care for the man and it seemed to manifest itself from her as a way of skipping over checking on him entirely lest it become obvious she was asking on more than a mere professional/coworker level.

Ben took one final sip before putting his glass back on the table and grabbing his cutlery. “I’m fine Karina” He said as he calmly cut a piece of his fish “For now let’s focus on you” He smiled slightly as he took a bite of his food. After a moment of chewing, he continued “If you wish to specialize in an area of medicine it’s important to decide now, normally in hospitals you’d get your own department head to train you but out here we’re required to be Jack’s of all Trade, What is it you were preparing for?”

Dr. Ben Grey

She didn’t even have to think about that one. “Either trauma or xenobiology. That last mission with the acid creatures made me realize that general medicine isn’t gonna be much use out here in the long run. Or rather only general medicine. I know I won’t be able to have knowledge of every creature we meet out there, but a base knowledge of things to look for and a better head for how to act in a crazy situation like that again.” She took a sip of her drink and smiled. “Maybe next time I won’t panic and feel like a useless cadet when it all goes to hell.”

Whilst Niles spoke Ben continued eating his meal, slowly as he was focusing on her speaking. There was only so much left so he had finished the rest of his fish in that short time “Well” He grabbed a white napkin and wiped his mouth with care before placing it to the side “Xenobiology is an important aspect of the job if you ever want to make chief and trauma is something every doctor in the Fleet will deal with at one point or another.” He chuckled softly “Being able to operate in a state of panic is something you’ll have to work on, it’s not something you can teach but something you learn from experience”

Dr. Grey - CMO

She listened to him because she respected his responses. Nodding as he mentioned Xeno, she smiled. “I honestly don’t know why I didn’t consider it while at Academy. I guess at that age, in that setting, the idea of ‘aliens’ seems to limit itself to Klingons, Romulans and other humanoid style lifeforms.” She laughed. “You aren’t sitting at your station in the classroom thinking about how to deal with acid for blood wolf creatures the size of more personal transports.” She also gave thought to his comment about trauma. “I guess in that regards, yes. I just hate the idea that in order to learn, you have to experience. Maybe I need to start running random sims from past xeno missions others have been on and start seeing how I react in those situations.” She laughed at the idea of her stumbling around the holodeck in some crazy simulation.

Ben chuckled “There aren’t many things you can prepare for, trust me on this. Best you can do is arm yourself with knowledge and find a way to utilize it in the best possible ways.” He grabbed his glass and emptied the remainder “It also helps to find a way to overcome fear although I’m not certain how one teaches that, it takes time but you can get used to working under the threat of destruction or death. Hell it appears to be a near certainty on this ship” He said with a wry smile. he then grabbed the bottle and poured more wine in his glass.

Ben Grey

Karina smiled. “It seems we are. I’m going to apply to the Medical Academy to see about getting my course certification onboard. I know it’s a lot to ask, but may I list you as a mentor, Sir? If not, it’s all right. I can reach out to my last Chief. I don’t wish to burden you.” She laughed. “We’ve all been thru a lot, lately. I’m sure even the Station Medical Chief would help me after all I did there while waiting for you all.”

Karina

“Of course” Ben said with a soft laugh “But what happened to make you so sure the Station Medical Chief won’t support you?” He asked curiously.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Nothing, honestly. Other than I haven’t known them long. And I’d rather be able to look to you if I need. Also as for my past experience goes, they don’t know me and wouldn’t be able to honestly say what I was or wasn’t ready for. Not in any sincere way, anyway.” She grinned and winked, “Besides, I think no matter where we end up in the vastness of space, I’ll always look to you as my ‘Chief’. Hard to go thru what we have, several times, and not think that way, I guess.” She laughed, “If that’s not stalker weird to you, I mean.” She smiled and sipped her drink to cover the crimson rising on her cheeks.

Ben shook his head in amusement “Well thank you for that, hopefully, before long I’ll be able to shake your hand as a fellow Chief” He’d never before considered that he’d have a… protege for a lack of a better word. “Although I’m hoping to take a little leave sooner rather than later. I’ve been planing a trip to the outer colonies with my cousins for some time now, the Oed system way out in the boonies” he joked.

Ben Grey

Karina smiled. “Well, perhaps you can do it sooner rather than later. Take your personal time I mean,” she grinned letting the words sink in. “What with me back and all, I could hold things down with NE Lieutenant JG Braxton, till you got back.”
