SNIP

Whilst Niles spoke Ben continued eating his meal, slowly as he was focusing on her speaking. There was only so much left so he had finished the rest of his fish in that short time “Well” He grabbed a white napkin and wiped his mouth with care before placing it to the side “Xenobiology is an important aspect of the job if you ever want to make chief and trauma is something every doctor in the Fleet will deal with at one point or another.” He chuckled softly “Being able to operate in a state of panic is something you’ll have to work on, it’s not something you can teach but something you learn from experience”

She listened to him because she respected his responses. Nodding as he mentioned Xeno, she smiled. “I honestly don’t know why I didn’t consider it while at Academy. I guess at that age, in that setting, the idea of ‘aliens’ seems to limit itself to Klingons, Romulans and other humanoid style lifeforms.” She laughed. “You aren’t sitting at your station in the classroom thinking about how to deal with acid for blood wolf creatures the size of more personal transports.” She also gave thought to his comment about trauma. “I guess in that regards, yes. I just hate the idea that in order to learn, you have to experience. Maybe I need to start running random sims from past xeno missions others have been on and start seeing how I react in those situations.” She laughed at the idea of her stumbling around the holodeck in some crazy simulation.

Ben chuckled “There aren’t many things you can prepare for, trust me on this. Best you can do is arm yourself with knowledge and find a way to utilize it in the best possible ways.” He grabbed his glass and emptied the remainder “It also helps to find a way to overcome fear although I’m not certain how one teaches that, it takes time but you can get used to working under the threat of destruction or death. Hell it appears to be a near certainty on this ship” He said with a wry smile. he then grabbed the bottle and poured more wine in his glass.

Karina smiled. “It seems we are. I’m going to apply to the Medical Academy to see about getting my course certification onboard. I know it’s a lot to ask, but may I list you as a mentor, Sir? If not, it’s all right. I can reach out to my last Chief. I don’t wish to burden you.” She laughed. “We’ve all been thru a lot, lately. I’m sure even the Station Medical Chief would help me after all I did there while waiting for you all.”

Karina

“Of course” Ben said with a soft laugh “But what happened to make you so sure the Station Medical Chief won’t support you?” He asked curiously.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Nothing, honestly. Other than I haven’t known them long. And I’d rather be able to look to you if I need. Also as for my past experience goes, they don’t know me and wouldn’t be able to honestly say what I was or wasn’t ready for. Not in any sincere way, anyway.” She grinned and winked, “Besides, I think no matter where we end up in the vastness of space, I’ll always look to you as my ‘Chief’. Hard to go thru what we have, several times, and not think that way, I guess.” She laughed, “If that’s not stalker weird to you, I mean.” She smiled and sipped her drink to cover the crimson rising on her cheeks.

Ben shook his head in amusement “Well thank you for that, hopefully, before long I’ll be able to shake your hand as a fellow Chief” He’d never before considered that he’d have a… protege for a lack of a better word. “Although I’m hoping to take a little leave sooner rather than later. I’ve been planing a trip to the outer colonies with my cousins for some time now, the Oed system way out in the boonies” he joked.

Ben Grey

Karina smiled. “Well, perhaps you can do it sooner rather than later. Take your personal time I mean,” she grinned letting the words sink in. “What with me back and all, I could hold things down with NE Lieutenant JG Braxton, till you got back.”

Karina
Doctor

The Scotsman laughed “Doctor Lemann is still here and she’s still the next in line” Ben said in a teasing voice “And Braxton can’t be trusted with dermal duty let alone safeguarding my Sickbay”

Dr. Grey - CMO

“I like Lemann. I am glad she is still here helping you. And yes,” she smiled, “you’re right about Braxton which is why I said I’d help him. I just don’t have the rank to ‘outrank’ him.” She laughed. “I was going to surprise you but you’ll see it on the manifests and reports this evening, I am sure. You are my supervisor as of tomorrow, again.” She shrugged with a teasing grin. “If you’ll have me back, that is.”

Ben shook his head in amusement once more “You’ve already been approved, and there’s more to seniority than rank. Experience is key, that’s why senior Non-coms get so much respect in the fleet.” He swirled his glass a little more before taking another rather large sip “Other than that how have things been?” He asked with genuine curiosity.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Karina smiled as he said she was already approved. “Thank you, Doc. And you are right. I’ll definitely work on the experience as well as the rank. I’m going to take the JG exam this year now that I finally qualify.” She finished her drink and shrugged. “Now that you guys are back, things are better. It was hard at first. I came back from the temp assignment only to discover you, the ship I mean, was gone. And no one seemed to know what had occurred or how.” She shook her head and laughed. “Believe it or not, it was duplicates from the Mirror universe that helped us out in the end. So all and all, I guess things are ok. I’m glad you came back and not your duplicate.” She laughed again but it was a bit hesitant.

Karina
Doctor

Ben locked eyes with Karina, the green in his eyes seemingly intensifying “Now how would you know I haven’t been replaced by my counterpart, perhaps I am this mirror Benjamin and I have in fact no idea who you are outside of his personal logs and the ships manifest” He took a slow sip from his wine.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Karina looked at him as long as he did. His eyes still one of her favorite features of him. When he took a sip of his wine, she smiled. “I think after meeting your duplicate, getting you instead of him, and everything we have been thru… I would hope I could tell you both apart. Sadly, the test some crewmates use wouldn’t work for us. So I only have to go with gut.” She laughed remembering how several folks had told her they had known the real from the Mirror crewmates.

Benjamin nodded, a sudden feeling of queasiness took over as he thought of the Mirror Parce. His face paled and his smile faded for a moment, he quickly brought the glass to his lips and emptied it then went to refill it “I suppose that’ll have to be enough” He tried his best to do a friendly smile “Besides from what I heard my duplicate was quite different, in a relationship even.”

Dr. Grey -CMO

As he balked and paled, Karina’s hand went to his. “Doctor Grey… it’s all right.” She frowned and shook her head. “I didn’t mean to be insensitive.” She blushed slightly and looked down. “I merely meant that I heard a couple folks on the ship say they knew who the duplicate was because of little intimacies were obviously different. From kisses, to how they held hands to terms of endearment.” She looked back up at him. Pulling her hand back she smiled. “It’s all right. It’s just as it has always been for two years now. I promise.” She smiled softly at him hoping to give him a bit of support to ease him.

Karina
Doctor

Benjamin chuckled “Too bad, I wasn’t so intimate with Mr Parce” He said with dry humour “He took another gulp from his glass “Well I think that’s it for me, have to be up bright and early tomorrow morning” He quickly finished his wine, no reaction to the dry drink as he downed it “Doctor” He said with a nod as he stood up from his seat.

Dr. Grey - CMO

She smiled and nodded to him. “Then I guess we’ll just have to get to know everyone better this time around, huh?” She smiled softly at him and nodded when he rose. “See you in the morning for my check in… boss.” She nodded once more as she teased him with the title.

Doctor

Benjamin hesitated for a moment, forced a smile, and gave Karina a slight bow of his head before turning around and leaving without uttering another word. On his way out she could see him take out his necklace and placing it against his nose and inhale deeply.
