“No,” said Juvri, “I think I might throw up though.” She said, looking down the mountain from where they now stood. Looking back up, she spotted the areas that Viyara had been pointing out. Either something that stuck out or a sort of indent was each spot, which would provide something to hold on to. “Aren’t you supposed to have some kind of gear for this?” She asked, suddenly having doubts about the whole thing.

“You’ll be fine. Just don’t look down,” Viyara said encouragingly. “As for gear, some do, some don’t. I never go climbing with ropes and the like unless I have to. But-” She tilted her head and mustered Juvri for a brief moment. “If you prefer I can alter the program a little and you can climb with the help of ropes. And proper climbing shoes would be good for both of us. ” Without waiting for a reply, she adjusted the program. Now a rope, secured properly and all, was dangling down the side the of mountain and on the ground between them lay a small pile of equipment: two pairs of climbing shoes, two climbing harnesses, two pairs of fingerless gloves, two bags with chalk and one climbing helmet. “Better?” she asked with a lopsided grin. While she didn’t plan on using the harness or robe when climbing up herself, she did understand Juvri’s concern and while she liked to push people out of their comfort zone, she didn’t want to terrify her.

“Much better, actually,” Juvri said, putting on the equipment. Once she was ready, she said, “So. How exactly do you do this?” She was still pretty close to terrified, honestly, but she kept reminding herself that joining starfleet had been pushing her comfort zone, and while she hadn’t meant this exactly, she had meant to become less of a chicken.

While Juvri had put on her equipment, Viyara put her harness and gloves on as well. She then took her hand without asking and gently but decidedly pulled her close to the mountain side. While she explained what Juvri had to do she put the ropes in place. She then pointed towards certain parts of the rock within the woman’s reach and said, “You want to grab those first and make sure your hands are covered in chalk. That keeps them from getting slippery. But I’ll have you should you slip, so no worries and you can always come down if it’s getting to much. Okay?” And not really giving her the chance to say no, Viyara took a few steps back and got herself in position.

Juvri nodded, chalking up her hands. Thankfully, she hadn’t been about to say no anyway, but she noticed that Viyara had stepped back before she could say anything at all. So, instead, she stepped up to the rock face and grabbed the handholds that Viyara had pointed out, lifting herself off the ground and fully onto the rocks. “Oookay! Where now? There?” She asked, looking at a few indents in the rock just a tad higher than she was now.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Yes, that looks good,” Viyara said while holding tightly to the rope and thus securing Juvri. “It’s always best to reach for a handhold that you can reach fairly easily. That way you have a proper grip and won’t slip,” she added as she watched the security officer closely, not only to make sure that she wouldn’t hurt herself in any way, but also because she quite frankly liked looking at people.

She grabbed another grip, pulling herself up a little higher. Gaining confidence, she grabbed another, and another, until she had made her way a fair distance up the rock face. “Woah! Look at that! I’m nearly half way to the top!” She said, turning her head to look down at Viyara.

“You are doing really well,” Viyara replied encouragingly. “You’re a fast learner.” It was great to see the shy security officer come out of her shell a little and it left in the scientist the sense behind that pushing people out of there comfort zone really was the right approach.

And for some, it was. For others, pushing them out of their comfort zone could prove disastrous. Thankfully, Juvri was one of the former. Getting more confident with each successful grab and climb, she began to move quicker up the rock face. Right up until her grip slipped on one of the handholds she’d picked and she slipped off the rock face with a startled, “No- augh!”

Viyara’s reflexes were so swift, that Juvri only fell a few centimetres before Viyara had a tight hold on the rope. She was feeling suddenly very grateful that Juvri had asked about climbing gear. For while she didn’t care about getting in trouble and tended to be reckless, she never purposefully tried to (physically) hurt people. “Are you okay?” she called up to Juvri. “Do you want to try and continue climbing the last bit up, or should I help you get down?”
