“Just the way I like it,” she said with a slightly wicked smile. Relann had never been competitive before, but it was something she found popping up more and more lately. Was it a result of Links, or was it just a part of her that had been subsumed under years of the dutiful practices of her Faith? She wasn’t sure, so she let that thought pass through her mind unanswered.

“What about that slight lag in the phasers we were experiencing?” she asked before taking an adventurous sip from her mug. Her violet eyes went immediately wide. “Wow!” she exclaimed before he could respond to her question. “That’s sweeter than I was expecting. Not that that is bad, just surprising,” she said realizing how her remarks might have come across.

Nash raised his own cup to her in a mock ‘cheers’ salute and took a mouthful of the coffee, savoring the sweet and hot drink for a moment before putting down the cup. “It’s one of my own favorites” he told her, “designed to get you awake in the morning and keep you awake while on the job. It’s not to most peoples taste I admit” he smiled, “but it has been with me since the Academy.”

“I can see the appeal.”

“The lag in the phasers” he returned to the PaDD, “we found was caused by an errant run-time calculation in the targeting software. It was running extra checks on the firing solution when it didn’t need to, possibly it slipped through our last series of updates from Starbase as our own diagnostics did not recognize it as an error, meaning it was built in. We’ve adjusted the software to remove the extra calculation without reducing the safety margins and notified the techs at Starfleet Operations. Our next series of evaluations will see more improvement on the response times as our phasers can target and fire faster now without losing accuracy.”

Fell nodded .”Good. I knew it wasn’t serious, but I can’t help getting a bit anxious when our defensive systems are anything less than one hundred percent. Occupationally hazard,” she said with a grin. Between her job as XO and her former life as a security officer, she had a strong need to always be prepared.

Nash picked up his cup again and took another drink, the powerful sweet hit not seeming to phase him. “I’m still requesting a higher proportion of Quantum torps to the standard Photon’s, the higher loading time can be offset by the new auto-loader we had installed and they simply performed better in the simulation. Being more powerful we will also need to use fewer of them, thus saving our resources in a stand up fight and making the shorter ones more efficient.”

“Have you tested the new loader yet?” she asked.

Fell-Drayke, XO

“No” he admitted bluntly, “only on simulations on the holodeck. Without an exact point of reference I set a program I have to operate with the Auto-loader installed. Seeing as I knew the outcome and circumstances of that battle intimately, I used it to test the improvement of the new system while using Quantum torpedo’s.” Nash paused slightly and took a drink, although noticeably he avoided looking at the Executive Officer.

“There was improvement, approximately 38% in fact on the probable outcome of that battle. It showed that the design is viable and that the Quantums will have a marked improvement over the Photon compliment we carry now. Less Quantum torpedo’s were used in fact in that battle than the original Photon’s, although the firing rate was faster. They simply had more impact and the rapid launch capability was harder for the target ships to counter. That’s the basis of my recommendation and I ran the simulation five times.”

Lt Cmdr Nash, XO.
