Ryley rolled over and stared at the ceiling in concentration. His gruff bearded face screwed up in darkness as his brain tried to work out what had woken him, instinctively he reached a hand down under his covered to his bad leg. Years of pan waking him in the night made it almost habit. But there wasn’t any pain, at least none that the hypo before bed hadn’t dealt with.

He heard the noise of the computer and turning his head realised simultaneously that it was the sound of a message and also the cause of his consciousness at…glance to time…3am. This had better be good or someone was going to be murdered.

=^= computer play message.=^= he yawned and allowed his head to flop back onto his pillow, eyes closed so he could hear whatever inane noise this was then go back to sleep.

=^= ALLEXXANDER JAY RYLEY!=^= they message began and as if some ad sent a shock of electricity through his spine Ryley jumped upwards from his prone position and stared in abject horror. =^= How dare you not answer me Alexxander, you know fine well it is me calling. Four years we assume you are dead and what do I find you are alive and not only that you are just swanning around the galaxy. No time to so much as call your own mother? Well that is not how you were raised and another thing…=^=

The message continued but Ryley wasn’t really listening, he knew that voice and that tone, it meant only one thing, his mother.

=^=…and I can tell you that this Klingon ship is not at all sanitary but it was the only one going in your direction and so I’m about 5 hours away. You and I need to talk.=^=

Again with a start Ryley jumped up from the bed and tangling in the blankets fell onto the floor with a lot of swearing and a short oof noise. His mother! Coming here? That wasn’t happening, no way not at all. Normally he foisted his parents off saying he was too busy or just ignored them when they came but this was totally different he couldn’t get away from her here and the sounds of it meant she was nearly upon him!

The message had ended by the time Ryley disentangled himself and stood panting from the effort in his pyjama bottoms. He ran a hand through his hair in exasperation then froze as he considered how long it actually was…and the beard.

He scowled, refused to cave. He was a grown man dammit. A grown man who was about to cut his hair p, trim his beard and find a dammed uniform!! Sleep was now totally out of the question.

It was therefore and hour or so later a very tidy looking Ryley, his hair and beard both trimmed and brushed and well within regulation standards in a variant of the medical uniform and a white and grey med dept standard isssued lab coat, that headed along the corridors to the turbo lift. Ignoring the expressions of those crew member who saw him to warn someone of the approaching doom.

Rolling his entire head around on his shoulders Ryley stood before the Captains office door and pulled the uniform collar away from his throat. He hated these stupid things. Picking.up hia cane he jabbed the door chime harshly.with the bottom and waited, fidgiting with the sleeves of the labcoat and scratching at his neck.

“Come in,” Kelly half yelled and half spoke. As Ryley entered he would see Kelly in an oversized sweatshirt with the logo Lunar Grays emblazoned across the front along with a football textured like an asteroid. The half-smiling gray alien holding the ball had a finger up giving a thumbs up type sign since it only had four fingers. She was in a pair of workout pants but clearly was not going to the gym. Instead, she was balancing on the back of the couch and struggling to hang garland on the wall near the ceiling. “Just give me a minute,” she half grunted pressing a hook into the wall as she concentrated on the wall instead of who was going to be entering her quarters.

Ryley blinked as he stood and watched Kelly, after a second or so admiring the view so to speak Ryley limped forward and picking his cane up turned it and used the end to push the garland closer to the hook. With his free hand he pulled at the stupid itchy uniform collar again and cleared his throat.

“You know it’d be sensible to get a ladder or even a stool. That couch tips and you’re going to break your neck.”

“Well that is why I have you as a medical chief,” Kelly half murmured admiring her work as she spoke. “If you can’t stitch us back together,” she said and then slowly turned around while still talking. “....oh Jesus, Mary and Joseph,” she blurted out and nearly fell off the couches back where she was precariously perched on. Grabbing the wall and bobbling about as if she was a 1950’s housewife that had just seen a mouse, Kelly took a moment to pursue her top doc. “Ryley why are you in uniform,” she asked in a tone that would have sounded more appropriate paired with the verbiage of ‘Ryley why are you buck naked.’ The shock was apparent on her face. The rigid dance of you are wearing a uniform/I am not wearing a uniform had been a tango the two had tripped since they met. For the life of Kelly, she could not figure out what would have possessed such as change of heart so to speak. It was obvious Ryley was not trembling in his size eleven boots from all the threats of what Kelly would do if he did not wear it. Only one thought went through her head. “Oh my God…are you....dying?”

The retort was there on the tip of his tonguei don’t stick together idiots who self inflict injury falling off of furniture, natural selection and all that… but he did t get a chance to use it. Her response was expected perhaps but he scowled darkly nonetheless.

“What?!…No of course not! If I were why the hell would I be in your office rather than on a beach with skimpily clad people and mai-tai by the bucket.” He sighed and caught himself. “No. However I will probably wish I were by the end of this, it’d be easier for everyone.” Rolling his eyes, head and shoulders in his itchy annoying lab coat Ryley looked at her then at his feet, deflating like a WW1 zeppelin. “There’s a Klingon ship on the way to rendezvous with us…my mother’s decided she’s coming to visit.”

He looked up and fixed her with the full glare of his icy blue eyes, his expression daring her to laugh at him however they both knew that he had nothing to do should she rightly choose to do so.
