A long day of chasing the EMH around sickbay granted him this, Ryley held the amber liquid in his glass to the light and then drank it in one fluid motion. Empty glass returned to the bar top with a clink. The greying old doctor made a face and screwed up one eye. How he detested synthahol. It was like a teen party with supervision all of the motions but none of the inappropriateness that made it worthwhile.

Regardless he motioned to the bartender who brought him another with a small smile that Ryley returned with a scowl. He snatched the glass from the young Guy who held up a hand and walked away to serve another couple at the other side with the Doctor glowering at him the whole way.

Ryley shook his head, he was becoming much too sociable on this ship. This was the third time in the last week he had been in the lounge. He took the second drink much like the first and despite the urge to hunch his shoulders and give off a ‘leave me the hell alone’ vibe instead turned to watch the other patrons.

Mardusk had finished his shift and decided that a meal and drink or six was in order. Walking into the lounge, he looked around for an empty table. Seeing none, he gritted his teeth and looked at the bar. Seeing a few empty stools he made his way over and, seeing Ryley, nodded once and said “Evening, Doc.” and he waved at the bartender. “The usual. But hold off on the food until I get a table, will you? Thanks, Jazz.” and he sat down on one of the stools. Looking at the CMO, he said “How’s business?” and the bartender came back with a massive pitcher of cold, dark beer- no glass- and four shots of whiskey.

Ryley was in the middle of his favourite game. ‘Diagnose the crowd.’ He had his head tilted watching the NE in blue talking and laughing with another two NEs from the engineering and science divisions. Blue was scratching a patch of skin on his neck and side under his uniform. One of the other NEs in red at another table had her arms crossed and her lips pursed as she watched Blue’s show. A patch of red skin on her neck stood out further as she blushed and then standing stormed away from the lounge.

“Not bad.” Ryley eventually answered giving the CoS a quick glance up and down, his trademark tricorder like gaze only fleeting as he went back to the crowd. “Table over there free.” He commented pointing at the one the Red NE had just vacated. He turned back to the bar and seemed surprised when another full glass of scotch awaited him. Questioningly he looked at the bartender who was busy with Mardusk’s order and scowled again when the man simply smiled and finished putting the other drinks down to go about his business.

“Sweet.” Mardusk said glancing at the table and then picking up the pitcher in one hand, downing two of the shots, and picking up the other two. “Hey Jazz!” he hollered at the bartender. “I’m heading to that table. Mind sending my food over there?” The barkeep nodded and gave the Security Chief a wink. “Want to join me, Doc?” Mardusk asked. “Hell of a lot more comfortable than these stools, and I’m buying.” he said with a chuckle.

Ryley looked over at him, he didn’t make himself merry at social events or share food with people as a rule of thumb, normally he would sit alone and scowl at people who came his way. A trait he had adopted from some Klingon crew years before. On the other hand closer proximity to study NE Blue was appealing. He rolled his head. “Sure why not.” He said against his better judgement and followed taking his own scotch with him.

He leaned his cane against the table and pulled his bad leg into a more comfortable position as he sat. “Let me guess your usual order of food is going to be enough to sink a small battle cruiser right?”

With a completely straight face, Mardusk said “I have no idea what you are talking about, Doctor.” as the barkeep came over Ryley’s head with a tray he set down with a small grunt. Off the tray and onto the table were unloaded two large rare rib-eye steaks, two baked potatoes with everything on them, a bowl of live Gagh, four rolls of sushi, and a bowl of Vulcan Ulan soup. All of which was accompanied by two more large pitchers of very dark beer and a large pitcher of water. Without a change in expression, Mardusk said “Oh, did you want anything?”

Ryley seemed unleashed by the sheer bull of food. “Nope. I don’t eat while I’m drinking.” He shook his glass slightly and sipped.

Mardusk nodded. “Good call. Waste of good synthohol to cushion it with food.” and he began eating. In between bites, he would pick up a pitcher like a glass and take a drink. After a few moments, he looked at Ryley and said in a low voice “Why you keep glancing at that Ensign? He owe you money or something?”
