Sam was in her usual spot during the slow hours of the Omega shift, balanced on the safety railing around the warp core, attempting to write her watch report for the chief using slightly more professional language than ‘Nothing happened. Again.’ This was proving the most challenging part of her shift.... until....

“Yellow Alert, all hands man your stations, and report readiness.” She called, hoping down from her perch and moving across the room towards her station.

“Someone wake up the Chief and tell him we have a potential situation here” She called, as her eyes danced over the board, checking status reports.

=^=”Engineering to Bridge, Engineering manned and ready. “=^=

She glanced towards the doors, hoping to see the reassuring figure of the Chief Engineer arriving, before turning her attention to the board infront of her, attempting to figure out what had made her watch suddenly a whole lot more exciting.....

Ensign Keene - Engineering

Over the comm, Keene would hear a voice come through. It was rough and low.

=/\= Helm, move us away from the anomaly, half impulse =/\= it said =/\= That’s a heck of a lot of radiation hitting us, Engineering try and adjust the shield harmonics to see if we can find a range that reduces radiation penetration. Do we have a read on what type of radiation we are getting? =/\=

The comm line was open, meaning that Keene would be able to hear the conversation on the Bridge.

Lt Cmdr Nash
CTO

Sam nodded to herself and her fingers raced over the controls, adjusting the shields to best withstand the pounding they were taking from the ‘whatever’ that had dropped in unannounced.

The normal adjustments didn’t seem to have the desired effects, but working in the lower frequency, lower power bands were at least draining more slowly. But even as Sam watch the shields were dropping from 92% to 84% and the lower bands tended to be less effective in the first place.

Satisfied, she switched to the sensor suite…

=^=”Jeez this thing is pumping out the rads!”=^= she muttered out loud, forgetting that she was on an open channel to the bridge in her excitement. She adjusted sensors as best as she was able, attempting to filter out as much of the static that seemed to be affecting them as possible and get a clear reading.

=^=Uh, Bridge, this thing is doing a serious number on our sensor grid, I’m attempting to compensate. =^= She gritted her teeth and resumed her battle with the sensor suite.

Ensign Keene - Engineering

That same low voice came back. Rough, almost gravelly as it spoke obviously to the Bridge as well as her. =/\= Is the Captain on her way? =/\= The voice asked someone on the Bridge, =/\= Keep clearing up those sensors Engineering, we need to know what we have. =/\=

Lt Cmdr Nash
CTO

OOC: We’ll assume the previous info in the main bridge thread has been heard here as well, open comm line.

IC: =/\= Engineering, we need more power! Give everything we got to the warp engines. Helm get us out of here, Warp 1. Move to Red Alert. =/\= came the voice, it didn’t sound panicked or alarmed, just urgent.

That same voice then seemed to speak to someone else on the Brdige =/\=Can you help get these sensors back on track? Get a message out to other ships in the area?=/\=

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

Keene gripped the stanchion next to her station as another shudder rocked the ship, riding the heaving deck subconsciously as she responded to the instructions from the bridge, feeding all available discretionary power to the warp engines.

The power flowed as directed, but the systems didn’t seem to receive it. It was like pouring water into a giant hole. They didn’t even hear the sound of the water hitting bottom… there was just nothing.

Sam scanned the status board as telltales started to light up, feeling the vibrations from the deck through the soles of her feet as she weighed the stresses and strain being placed on the hull by the encroaching anomaly.

“Keene to Bridge, recommend we divert reserve power from the phaser banks to the structural integrity field or this thing is gonna rip us open like a birthday pinata!”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

=/\= Engineering, this is Nash. Get on with it then, take everything you need, including power from the Captains coffee machine. =/\=

While most would have made the last part of that sentence in jest, Nash had delivered it in a tone of complete and utter sincerity, Keene couldn’t see it, but not a muscle on his face had twitched as he said it.

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

The warp chamber started to hum as per normal, it hit critical reaction and the normal snap that occurred when the warp field was created didn’t occur nor did the momentary vibration the came with moving into subspace. Despite all the lack of outward effects the warp chamber was doing its comfortable thwupping as if she was already at warp - even though they were not.

Deck 7 and 8 power conduits blew out… the shear force rocked the connectors apart and allowed for the conduit to just pour electric fire though a panel and into a corridor.

Sam took a breath, the red alert lighting casting highlights across her face as she turned to glance at the Warp Core, finding a degree of calm in it’s steady beat, centering herself and feeling her own heart beat slow from it’s rapid beat until it matched the steady pulse of the massive cylinder.

The deck shook again and she glanced over the damage control board, cursing under her breath.

=^= Bridge - Electrical fire! Decks 7 & 8, DC teams dispatched, emergency force fields in place, fire suppression systems activated. =^=

Ensign Keene - Engineering

Suddenly the rocking of the ship stopped and it grew eerily silent.

The blow conduit was the most urgent of the issues. There was moderate structural damage on two decks and minor damage on three more. The other problems including overloads and blown gel packs across the whole ship. It was as if suddenly losing power was an issue to the electronics of the ship.

Taking advantage of the moments calm, Sam took the chance to relay the worst of the damage to the command team.

=^=Bridge - Damage report, We’ve got structural damage across decks 6-10 with multiple overloaded conduits and blown gel packs across all systems....... =^=

A disembodied face, that seemed like a stone golem appeared before the warp drive staring it for a moment before turning and facing Keene, “=^= Better turn that thing off, if you go to warp in here…=^= the face looked confused for a moment. =^=Hmmm, actually I have no idea what would happen. But I suspect it wouldn’t be good.=^=

GM

Sam took a step back at the sudden appearance of the entity, almost as startled by it’s craggy features as by the fact that it spoke in such a matter of fact turn of phrase.

=^=....... Um..... Bridge..... we have a, uh, visitor in main engineering. He, errr, It recommends shutting down the Warp Drive as it may cause further damage at this time. =^=

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“Would it be better if I do this on the bridge?” The head nodded towards the engine… “I’m telling you turn that thing off. I can’t…” He turned towards the warp controls and as if he knew exactly what buttons to depress the warp drive was shut down. It was not as if Keene couldn’t reverse the process by reversing the buttons that somehow mystically were depressed by this creature. “I’ll explain to your hierarchical leader.”

And with that the face faded away…
