Some twenty minutes after his parents arrival Ryley sat staring into space pretending to listen as his mother explained the goings on and interests of the time he had ‘been away’ as she was now calling it.

John Ryley cleared his throat causing his son to blink and glance at him. Carefully Ryley gave his father a critical appraisal as he went from head to foot. Part of his eyebrows twitched in a slight frown but when his father looked at him he looked away again.

Blythe Ryley looked between her son and husband and sighed slightly moving her bag out of her way she sipped her cup of tea and gave them a moment. Ryley took the lapse in conversation to arch his eyebrows and say. “So what…you plan to ignore me now is that the idea?”

John Ryley sipped his coffee and carefully put it back on the table. “I’m not ignoring you Alexxander. Nice ship I assume this is preferable for your career to work as a..,what do they call it these days? A section head? A department head. I assume you’re killing time till your next court-martial?” He crossed his arms.

Ryley rolled his eyes, “Oh here we go…” he started, but was cut off.

“Enough.” His mother said causing both men to look at her. “ No more squabbling, I didn’t come this far to hear you both argue, put it to rest for today please.”

Both men glared at each other a moment then looked at the woman as she went onto explain how a close family friend’s daughter had twins.

The Security Chief strolled into the Lounge after his shift. He had spent it filing reports. He hated filing reports. Some Department Heads had aides to do that for them. Mardusk made a mental note to corral the Yeoman and see if he could shake an assistant loose from the bureaucracy. Seeing Ryley at a table with his folks (Mardusk made a note to be aware of everyone arriving and departing the ship), he set himself in the Doctor’s line of sight but outside the view of his parents and gave him the universal friend nod of ‘You okay? Want me to come over?’

Ryley raised an eyebrow and returned the look with a slightly more difficult to translate ‘if you could just have a heart attack round about now that’d be great.’

His mother had also raised her eyebrows. “Looking for an escape Alex?” She asked with a knowing smile. She glanced over her shoulder and seemed to size up Mardusk a moment then looked back at her son. “Diagnosing or did you manage to make a friend?” She seemed delighted at that prospect.

Ryley’s normal scowl response wouldn’t work here, he knew that, instead he went with the easy option. He looked at Mardusk again and conveyed ‘help!’

Mardusk walked over to the bar and retrieved his usual two pitchers and an unusual three glasses and then walked over to the table. Without waiting to be invited, he hooked a chair from the next table over with a foot and slid it next to Ryley. “Heya, Doc. What’s shaking?” and he lowered his massive bulk into the chair that audibly protested at the Orion’s weight. Looking at the two other people at the table, he hooked a thumb at his chest and said “Lieutenant Mardusk. Security Chief. Nice to meet ya.” and picked up a pitcher. He filled the glasses, sliding one to Ryley first, and then downed the remainder of the pitcher himself. “What do you think of our little home away from home, folks? Impressive piece of Star Fleet, isn’t she?” he asked.

The grey haired man that was Ryley’s father surveyed this newcomer but didn’t seem perplexed by the way he had sat down. He held a hand out and gave, what had so far been an uncharacteristic, smile. “Rear Admiral John Ryley…retired obviously. And my Wife.” He indicated Ryley’s Mother who smiled warmly and nodded her head. “Pleasure to make your acquaintance Lieutenant. The ship is impressive certainly.”

Ryley for his part rolled his eyes at the introduction when his fathers attention was off of him and downed the drink Mardusk had slid him in one fluid and fast motion, almost undetectable.

Mardusk cocked an eyebrow at the introduction, took the man’s hand in one massive green hand and said “Likewise, Admiral. So… does your wife have a name? Or is it just ‘Mrs. Rear Admiral Retired Obviously’?” and looked at Mrs. Ryley and gave a full smile of gleaming white teeth against dark green lips. Mardusk was not one to mince words, and had seen too much male posturing as his own mother rose in the ranks up to Vice Admiral to let the - perhaps- unconscious glossing over of the man’s wife to slip past without comment.
