OCC: Okay so I am going to do a couple of short posts on route to the holodeck explaining the rules of the game. I am hoping that we can have a bit of fun and maybe poke fun at our characters. Not everyone is amazing at everything and people do slip and fall and totally wipe out at times. So as you read this and if you decide to play have fun. To make it fair try to have your character do something amazing and then something not so amazing. ;). So as we post you will see that you can sabotage the other posters so the rule will be if you dork with another player then be gracious and let someone dork with you. This site is about having fun so I hope you will in this post.

Kelly adjusted her sun visor and looked through the mirror at Ian on the other side of their quarters also getting ready. Pursing her lips she decided to press the conversation one more time. “Babe are you sure you want to do this,” Kelly said pulling her ponytail tighter as she spoke. “I mean I did blow out my ACL at the Academy Championship, broke my femur in a friendly game with Dante, Dante sprained his wrist, I broke the XO’s nose of the USS Woebgone,” Kelly rattled off her list of injuries that she incurred and others while playing the game. “There is no shame in sitting it out. The game is rough.”

“Sweetie, I have fought a feral pack of Niren Raptors once, I am sure I can handle you and your game. Besides I love this spirit in you, fire… piss and vinegar. It’s what I like to see love.” he said with a wink as he began to pull his shirt over him.

“Fine fine but don’t say I didn’t warn you and I am not getting you ice packs every ten minutes when we get back because you got hurt,” Kelly warned shouldering her clubs on one arm. As they walked down the hall she decided to go over the rules one last time. She did not want her partner at a disadvantage during the game.

As she arrived at the holodeck Kelly was happy that they were the first to arrive. “Okay so let’s go over the rules,” Kelly said to Ian setting her clubs down. “Computer bring up the Rules for Altered Golf,” she requested.

=/\= Rules for Altered Golf =/\= the computer replied as one of the walls in the holodeck morphed into a set of rules.

  1. Each of the 18 holes of golf has a set four-minute playing duration. The ball must be in the hole at the end of the four minutes. If the ball is not in the hole the player will receive a penalty time of three minutes added to their score for each minute they go over the four-minute time frame.

  2. Each player is allowed to tee off before another player retaliates on them. The initial swing must be complete and the ball must leave the tee before another player can steal the other opponent’s ball or interfere with another player’s game in any fashion. If someone retaliates against another player or interferes with the ball before it has left the tee that player will be disqualified.

  3. Retaliation includes hitting a player with a golf club, punching/kicking/or tripping another player, sending another player’s ball off in any direction if it is encountered on the green, throwing objects at another player or using indigenous wildlife to impair another player’s game.

  4. The ball must be played where it lies unless it is in water more than two feet deep or has gone over a cliff. There are no other exceptions to not playing the ball where it lies.

  5. All players must have a partner. After the initial tee off pairs will use the best ball as the only golf ball they are playing with. Partners are able to defend their partners on all swings to move the ball to the hole. All players are able to retaliate against other players while swinging as long as it is not the initial tee off of every hole.

  6. Players are allowed to wear knee or elbow pads if they desire. All players must be in a collared shirt. Tank tops or collarless shirts are not permitted. Jeans and gym shorts are not permitted on the course but any other trouser or shorts are allowed.

Kelly pulled out a pair of knee pads from her golf bag and adjusted them as Ian read the rules to the game. “So you think you got this cowboy,” she asked looking around at the famous Palm Harbor Resort’s Copperhead course. It was a beautiful course and part of Kelly missed playing on real courses. The breeze, humidity, temperature…everything was real except it wasn’t. “If you don’t think you can run with the big dogs you can be my caddy,” she teased pulling out a club and using it as a bar to stretch out her arms and torso.

Captain Kelly Shultz

“Oh… you’re cute… did you think that all up by yourself. Out there I am not a caddy witch, though… bend over lemme see that ass and tell you if you can be one.” he said with a wink as he smirked at him, knowing the comment would get her riled up.

Bordeaux, Yeoman/Diplomat

Kelly stopped and looked at him. Their competitive streak was insane. “Honey, I am not being an ass. Simply a realist. You are going to go down like a little girl who dropped her ice cream and I am going to be the one saving your butt. Maybe we should not be partners,” she said crossing her arms. “That way I can knock some sense into you.” She let her eyes drift to the door. If someone else didn’t arrive soon, Kelly would tee off just to whack Ian with her club.

Captain Kelly Shultz

“You know, violence is often your answer I am noticing… we might need to bring that up with the counselor. I should schedule you that, maybe twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday?” he asked, knowing how much she truly would loathe such a venture.

Just then River walked in she was wearing a a blue shirt and black trousers it wasn’t much. However River didn’t really have a lot of casual clothes so she had just thrown on whatever she had. she had gone over the rules quickly and the idea of retaliation put a malicious glint in her eyes. She might be good at golf but she was very good at retaliation. As she walked River quickly twirled a golf club in her hand. She saw the captain and walked over to her. she didn’t know the other officer but she knew his name was Ian and he and the captain where an item.

“River Styxx reporting as requested” she said it seemed River only had to modes of talking regulation and slightly less regulation.

Lieut Styxx (Marine)

Leaning over to Kelly Ian whispered softly in her ear. “You didn’t make this mandatory did you? What is GI Jane doing?” he said softly, making sure only Kelly could hear before he straightened back up smiling softly at the Lieutenant.

River raised an eyebrow “If you’re going to talk about me make it less obvious. You may have spoken to quietly for me to hear but your actions speak volumes. Mr Bordeaux” She said simply.

“Oh I was in no way trying to hide anything. If you want next time I can speak up but I never meet a marine who gave two pisses about anything anyone said or did so I will make a note in your file to be sure to know that you are sensitive to things like that for the future.” Ian said as he rolled his eyes at the whole concept of someone even giving a damn about what he said to the Captain.

River laughed softly and coldly “I’m not sensitive. I was just seeing how easy it was to get a rise form you. When people are angry they show more of their true self. So i’m going to make a guess and say something and leave it at that. I don’t want to ruin the fun. I’m going to guess you don’t like marines, you think we are either to violent, to ready for a fight or to aggressive. Maybe it’s a bit more deep routed then that maybe you think we go against everything the federation stands for. However Without marines like me, people like you would be dead. we hold the line fighting and dying for the federation. Marines have the lowest life expectancy of nay branch of star fleet. And what do we get for it nothing. we just get looked own upon be people like you. However I know for fact and without a shadow of a doubt if it wasn’t for me and marines like me, we wouldn’t be getting ready to play golf” she said stepping closer to Ian. Her tone was soft but it was cold and slightly intimidating.

“I would be dead. And you would be locked in a war against a brutal, remorseless and merciless enemy. Who would be only to happy to take the ones you love away from you. They would board the ship kill as many as possible. Find her drag her off and throw her in a breeding camp. The higher the rank the greater the pride in breaking her.” She said looking him dead in the eyes.

“We’re not here for that though. If you wish to discuss it further we can talk afterwords . So let’s get back to the task in hand” She added after a short pause she would apologise to the captain later However River might be cold but she hated it when people judged marines as lesser, when she had seen just how far they would go and ulled the tags herself.

Ian looked at the Captain, his smirk never leaving his face. “Doll I don’t hate marines one damn bit, I’m just a smart ass who found someone saluting as they entered for a friendly game of golf weird. Though I do sense I touched a sensitive subject for you, if you want I can ask Rinker to give you some one on one time. He can work wonders on people who have a Messiah complex. Might even get you to grow a sense of humor and learn to take it down a few notches before that vein on your forehead pops. We might even need Doctor Surly to take a look as well, that can’t be a healthy sign there might be high blood pressure… hell it might even be gas… do you feel a little bloated right now? Woman issues?” Ian said finding this more than funny. This was an environment meant for just silly nonsense, not someone full of themselves. If this is how the woman acted during her time off he shuddered to think what would happen on duty.

River closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She needed to clam down. He had tried to get a rise out of her and he had succeeded. However wouldn’t admit that not ever. “And that’s what you have is it, a sense of humor. If that’s what you want to call it, fine. I don’t need a counselor and i don’t need help. I don’t have a Messiah complex if you read my file and looked at the notes attached to it, you would know i speak the truth. I can also direct you to several articles in the federation database as well if you’d like. However that’s for another time. I didn’t salute either all i did was address the captain with a tone of formal respect as you are supposed to do” River said steeping away her tone calming down and returning to her normal one.

Ian couldn’t help but shake his head as he rolled his eyes. “Semantics…” was all he said, he didn’t know why this marine was so wound tight but he knew she wouldn’t last very longer if she didn’t learn to get lose.

“You know between you comments did you ever stop to think, the reason i am the way i am, is because i had to be, that i had no choice. that my life has shaped me this way. or are you to busy being a smart ass to think of that. You’re right i am tightly wound, i am very formal and i am humorless. I had to be. I’ve never had the luxury of a cushy life. I’ve never spent my life on a cushy star ship in a cushy office, like Yeomans and diplomats have. I’ve lost a lot, scarficed a lot and it’s shaped me how i am today. I do not regret it. However i know in time i will have to change. It will take some time and it will be difficult but will have to happen one day.” She said hopping that would end it. She was trying to deescalate the situation before she ended up beating Ian into a pulp.

“Oh boo hoo the hell hasn’t had any issues? Marine, Starfleet we all have lost men, fought bled seen people die. It’s part of the job, you don’t see us going around carrying our physiological baggage around like some lost puppy looking for sympathy cause we didn’t have it easy or we had to take some lives. Grow up marine, this isn’t some fairy tale where you are the only one who has ever had to look down the sight of a phaser or carried out bodies as buildings burned around you. Most of us just choose to not let it weigh us down and try to find some joy in what otherwise can be a harsh job.” Ian said knowing he had before he stepped into his current role. Even after had many times he fought and seen others die. Hell joining the Atlantis alone had him shooting guns and pulling people out of burning buildings. Starfleet and marines were in this together, and whatever this Marine thought they all had something that could weigh them down as they go about their daily lives.

“Now, unless you want to continue pretend being the sole wounded officer on board a ship of veterans of all types, how about we get back to what we came here for.” Ian said, his tone had lost humor, he technically outranked the marine even if he wasn’t her direct superior, in fact everyone here did. He didn’t need to let what was supposed to be a fun evening get lost because someone felt the need to try and see who had the biggest sob story when no one had even asked to play in that contest to begin with.

River nodded “Fine by me. You’re right this isn’t the time or the place. This is why i don’t do social settings i always put my foot in it.” she said River hadn’t meant to sound like someone looking for sympathy she didn’t want sympathy, but she could see how i looked she was. All she wanted to do was forget what had just happened but she knew she couldn’t. She dreaded t think how it made her look in the eyes of the Captain. She hated herself for losing control. what was it with a ship that made her do so. Why couldn’t she just keep quiet and keep away form everyone.

The doors slid open and Mardusk arrived. And by arrived… he arrived. Decked out from head to toe, the giant green Orion wore black leather golf shoes (were the spikes a bit longer than regulation?), blue and white checkered knee length trousers with white socks with green alligators on them that covered his lower legs to the base of the massive knee pads separating them from the pants, a bright yellow and purple checkered shirt (with white collar), white leather golf gloves with knuckle reinforcements and red skull and cross-bone embroidery, and a Scottish tam on his head - complete with multicolored pom-pom on top. Hanging from his shoulder was a golf bag with a complete set of clubs - irons… woods… putter… oak… wedges…

Pausing to look each of the three previous arrivals up and down, he said “You have no sense of style.”

Mardusk, CoS

“I don’t care much for fashion as long as I have my Armour, my fatigues and my uniform. I’m fine” River said looking at the Chief of security. He seemed to cut an intimidating figure, but that didn’t mean a whole lot

“Can’t wear armor everywhere, chica. But if that what keeps you comfy, so be it. I guess I won’t have to worry about you stealing my seat next to the Runway on Magellai VII during Fashion Week, will I?” Mardusk replied dryly.

“Don’t call me chica.” River said plainly

“You got it, chick.” Mardusk replied evenly.

“Yes… style, and that’s what this is?” Ian asked as he arched an eyebrow at Mardusk. “I will stick with being unfashionable I guess… can’t let myself outshine you big guy.”

Bordeaux, Yeoman/Diplomat

“As if that was possible.” Mardusk replied with a grin.

Kelly stopped and looked at the group before her. While Altered Golf was a bit more feisty than regular golf it did have standard. “Mardusk a blind man could not miss your outfit. Ian you look the part but I have seen your backswing. River.....,” Kelly said and then paused. Kelly wasn’t sure what to comment on yet. She didn’t know the officer enough yet to rib but she liked her enough to want to make the woman feel at home on the command staff.

Captain Kelly Shultz

“Yes… that… that is the case. Fashion for all, work the catwalk big guy do a spin for me.” Ian said jokingly.

“A blind man could and should. High fashion is not just for seeing people. It is for all.” Mardusk said surprisingly agile spin to showcase his outfit.

Mardusk, CoS and King of the Runway

“It’s also good for helping snipers pick you out” River replied dryly “Well this should be interesting, we’ll just have to see how things goo” she added after a short pause.

Lieut Styxx (Marine)

Mardusk looked at the Marine and said “You need to relax, lady. You are wound tighter than Vulcan wedding planner.”

Mardusk, CoS

“It kept me alive on my last assignment. Even when many of my colleagues fell. So i’ll stick with it. However you never know i might unwind eventually. Miracles can happen. Although it would take a rather big miracle.” River said. she wasn’t sure what to make of the senior staff at the moment. it was hard for her to grasp relaxing it had been s long since had done it that she had forgotten how to.

Mardusk looked at her, eyes wide and slowly shook his head. “I didn’t think it was possible to cram so much angst in such a small package. Did the Corps issue you your dark disposition and sense of self-entitlement? Or did it come with the suit, Blondie?” he asked in mock awe.

Mardusk, CoS

OOC: Fixing split

“It’s not standard issue. I’m just awful at social interactions” she said simply “Oh and my names River, not Blondie or chick. River, River Styxx.” she added.

Lieut Styxx (Marine)

Mardusk looked at her, a blank expression his face and his eyes slightly wider in surprise. He was silent a moment as he processed this very unexpected piece of information, and then turned and looked at Kelly and Ian, and then slowly turned back. “Please tell me you’re kidding. I thought that was someone making a joke on the roster.”

Mardusk, CoS

River shook her head ” I assure you it’s no joke. And yes I am aware of the connotation with ancient myth. That’s probably why my superiors gave me the call sign reaper ” she said a small smirk on her face “Could it be i just found something to make you be at a loss for words?” she asked half heartily.

Lieut Styxx (Marine)

Kelly through all this had been either practicing her backswing or staring at the lively conversation occurring between her men. When she was young and naive, Kelly would have strutted in with a ramrod straight back, shiny black boots and the knowledge of the pips on her neck would force everyone to cease and desist. Just like the classic diapers holo-commerical about the mom with the first kid and then the second, Kelly learned, lived and then grew up. Starfleet might have started out as a scientific division of Starfleet but the inky depths of space soon taught the United Federation of Planets that they should not go exploring without some teeth. And that is what had created this issue and ones like this that played out everyday across the fleet. Men and woman like River fought and died so that utopian-minded idealists worked to make the galaxy a better place. It was all about balance. The Federation needed both types but they also needed a hodgepodge of people like the ones in this room. Mardusk was hard as nails. The security chief could put a phaser shot between the eyes of anyone trying to hurt the Federation but also rescue a kitten from a tree like he was fireman. Ian’s tongue was as sharp as any knife. He could decimate a delegation with stinging rhetoric to make them fall in line or charm the pants of a captain in a room full of Admirals yet never get a reprimand for insubordinate. The common feature between both men was an insane loyalty to the Federation and the ability to play hard when off duty. River one day would be like them both knowing the balance. She would also learn that not being well-behaved at times did not indicate dislike but more a hazing of sorts.

Everyone knew that Marines and security tended to have growing pains when they were stuffed in the same room. Over the years Kelly learned that they always found a pecking order during the downtime and worked seamlessly in combat. That was what Mardusk and River were working out now. Ian may seem like a happy go lucky charmer but there was far more to him. Being a diplomat he had the ability to see into one’s psyche and know what to say to push your buttons or confess your soul. He might not have stormed a barracks with a grenade but he knew psychological damage could be worse that a phaser shot to the chest. Ian was right. River needed to relax. His form of ice breaking conversation might not have been ideal but it did get the group interacting in a way. Now was the time though for Kelly to step in and take control.

“Hey,” she shouted loudly. “You three knuckleheads done playing whose ego is bigger. We are here to play golf. Now get your asses on the tee so I can get my 18 holes in before my duty shift. ” Kelly turned and headed to the tee. Spreading her legs to shoulder with apart, she lined up her club to the ball and did the golfers wiggle preparing to swing.

“Save the whose’s balls are bigger for the course because it is not going to matter anyway,” she said letting her voice get quieter as she lined up her ball ad the flag in the distance. “I am going to win this and you all are going to need ice packs and Ian faking my signature for a day off tomorrow anyway.”

As soon as her words ended a large red clock appeared in the sky. A friendly but slightly sinister sounding voice said in a perky tone =/\=May your swing be true. Five....four..=/\= she started a countdown indicating the game was about to begin.
