Snip

In that slight moment after her first comment, Nash’s mind flicked to a different place at a different time. He had been called dangerous before, but in a far more serious context. The reflection lasted only a moment as Jessica began speaking again, barely enough time for it to register in his eyes. He tucked it away out of mind in any case, it was years anyway.

The bartender delivered her drink and glared at the cigar on Nash’s hand for a moment before turning back to the other customers, but Nash simply grinned at him and stuck it, unlit, between his teeth in the corner of his mouth and turned his attention on the woman beside him once more and winced with a smirk as she introduced herself.

“Well there goes the mystery and romance of two strangers meeting for the first time in a lonely bar,” he joked, then looked around. “Okay, maybe not so lonely,” he admitted about the busy lounge, then returned his eyes to hers and picked up his beer. “Call me Ethan,”he said to her and found that he wasn’t adverse to her knowing his first name. Most people just called him by rank or Nash and for the moment, he was happy just being Ethan.

He looked past her for a second and noted she seemed to have come from no group, and he thought a girl with a killer smile like her would of had a fair bit of attention already. “It’s great to meet you Jessica, so what brought you my way? Just a lecture on the evils of smoking?” He teased her, his grin and eyes showing the humor clearly.

Jessica’s honed medical eyes caught something flash through Nash’s eyes but she couldn’t pinpoint what it might be. She was briefly concerned that she might have offended him with her comment, but he seemed like the type to let her know that if she had. She shook it off and collected her drink from the bartender with a grin and a polite thank you. Picking up the olives speared on a pick, she absentmindedly nibbled on them as she pondered a response to his question. Admittedly, she was also scrolling through the crew list in her head trying to think if she had seen a notable Ethan there.

After a few moments, she flushed lightly and replied, “I haven’t had a chance to meet many people here. I’ve been working a lot getting up to speed on the ship.” It was true. Beyond all of that confidence was a slight touch of insecurity at life on a Starfleet vessel. She’d been a doctor first, of course, so that part wasn’t too difficult, but figuring it all out within the confines of service… that was tiring. She purposefully skipped the first part of his question. Teasing aside, he did look a little dangerous with that cigar…

The cigar was of course a slight hindrance to drinking beer from the bottle, so Nash again removed it from between the corner of his mouth and returned it to the ashtray as he raised the bottle to his lips, watching her snack on the olive. He made no move to reach out and take one himself, in his opinion in they went much better with cheese. Noting the absence of it on the plate he decided to pass, instead making one final flip of the coin between fingers that had been in motion almost as long as they had spoken, aside from having to stop to hold something for a moment. Now the coin flipped once, twice and then he let it slip through his fingers where it just seemed to vanish. He took no notice and carried on giving Jessica his attention.

Nash nodded as she spoke, “It’s a decent sized ship to get used to for sure. It’s a little bigger than what I was used to, but it’s simple enough and there’s plenty of people.” Her avoidance of his question wasnt unnoticed, but that could be an interesting topic for later on if she had reason to not share it now. He grinned at her as a thought came to him and he took another sip, watching her to see if he could measure her likelyhood of finding it fun. She was bubbly , cute and friendly, easy to talk to and outwardly confident. “It sounds like you’ve been busy since arriving, so instead of talking about work, let’s get to know each other better? What’s your favourite music?”

Jessica was briefly mesmerized by the coin in Nash’s hand, but her attention was quickly taken back by his voice. She listened attentively, playing with a few strands of hair and then tucking them neatly behind her ear. “I love that idea,” she responded, with a large grin. She had no interest in rambling on about Starfleet when she was supposed to be off-duty. She had been spending enough of her off-duty time on Starfleet as it was. “You know, I never really had the opportunity to develop a favorite,” she responded. “I have a large number of siblings and there was never a particularly quiet time to enjoy it… and if there was, there was someone else that wanted their preference known. How about you?” She cocked her head to the side and met his eyes with her jeweled green ones as she waited for his response.

“Mood music,” Nash said with a light laugh before continuing, “I love music, but background music as I’m doing something and it depends on the job. Holodeck simulation of flying through an asteroid field chased by pirates, something like a good rock type beat. Surviving a zombie apocalypse, something more metal maybe. Sitting on the edge of a cliff watching a sunset, something soft and slow.” Nash made sure he made complete eye contact with her as he spoke the last line, turning it into a gentle flirt as his ice blues met her jewel greens.

“How many brothers and sisters do you have? You the youngest and most loved or the oldest and carry the most expectations?” He raised an eyebrow slightly and bit his lip in thought just for a moment, while he grinned “Youngest, right?”
