“How did you guess?” Her confidence and her beaming smile had returned as she giggled at Nash’s question. “I have five older brothers,” she continued, playfully acting up a wince. Long blonde hair fell into her face and her fingers automatically went up to tuck it back behind her ears, lingering there to tug on her earlobe for a second or two. She uncrossed and then crossed her legs again. She wasn’t really nervous, she observed… just a little fidgety in the slowly charging air between her and this surprising companion.

“Just a guess, with a few hints,” he said and took another sip, a small one, as his eyes followed her fingers through her hair then moved back to her but he noticed her movements. Maybe there was an element of nervousness at meeting someone new but he half dismissed it. She was bubbly and friendly and had approached him so shyness wasn’t really a thing with her he decided.

At the mention of family she had fidgeted, a play with her hair which could have been a flirt, something innocent or nerves, the tug on the earlobe which if the psych people were to be believed, could have indicated nerves or a feeling of vulnerability, maybe an outright lie? Then the woman had crossed and uncrossed her legs which was in theory another sign of nervousness or closing off a conversation, or of course something to draw his attention to her legs. Body language was so confusing and contradictory at times but there were enough signs there that the topic of her family might be a sensitive one for him to tread carefully on, so Nash smiled warmly and made sure his attention was on her, and not the room around them. He angled his shoulders more towards her, turning in his seat so his arm was along the bar top and closer to her, palm relaxed on the bar as they spoke. She had his attention, which wasn’t an easy thing to achieve for most people casually and Nash was highly aware of that, even intrigued by it and her and why he had noticed so much about her.

“You have the beautiful smile and the mischievous look in you eyes the youngest tends to have, you mentioned your brothers wanted their preferences to music known,” he grinned at her and sipped his beer before continuing, “the oldest kid would stamp their authority and get their way. I have a younger brother, Sam, happened all the time at home. Especially between brothers.” He paused for a second in wonder, looking to the bartender as he realized that for the first time here he had spoken about someone in his family and at the thought, he tapped a finger absently on the bar top, he hadn’t let anyone else know much about him. His smile widening some, his eyes returned to her. “Favorite place to take a walk? What’s your first thought if someone asked you to walk with them?”

Jessica reached for another olive, her arm brushing against Nash’s as she did so. The slight physical touch combined with the endearing compliment made her delicate features turn deep pink. “Thank you,” she replied softly, reaching for her drink as well and taking perhaps a larger than indicated sip as her confidence faltered just a smidge. She looked down at his tapping finger for a moment to center herself and then returned her gaze to him as he spoke again before she could ask about his brother. Oh, this was an easy question, she thought with relief.

“An Earth sand beach,” she immediately replied, a wistful smile coming over her face. “The crashing ocean waves, the cool breeze, the warm sun… it’s just heaven. And it’s much quieter than my family.” She said the last part with a laugh. She pondered a question to ask him, hoping to turn the tables just a bit before she made a fool of herself. She hadn’t had much time for flirting as she went through medical school and then the Academy. “Is your brother in Starfleet as well?” she finally settled on and then tentatively began to reach out to put her hand on his before mentally bolstering herself and completing the movement with slightly more confidence.

“He is. He’s a Doctor, which suits him. He was always the clever one out of the two of us and has a much better bedside manner.” Nash grinned as he spoke about Sam, the two had a healthy rivalry but loyalty to each other was deeply embedded in them ever since they were kids. His brother wasn’t exactly where his mind was concentrating now, though. Jessica’s deep blush and soft reply’s to his flirts and compliments had meant the slight smile he began with was now open and genuine and they were just that much different to her initial bold approach that he found he wanted to talk to her, find out more about her.

Her touch though, had been unexpected. The slight feel of what could only be described as an electric buzz over his skin when their arms had brushed earlier had led to a quickening of his heartbeat, a rush of heat around his collar. When she placed her hand on his Nash’s ice blue eyes stayed focused on hers, but he felt like a teen again as his breath caught in his throat. That lasted only a moment as he turned his hand under hers, so that now her hand sat within his and his thumb could gently trace the curve of hers. “Earth beaches are the best, aren’t they,” he spoke quietly, “The times I have been there, the beaches were one of my favorite places to go in my down time. Nowhere else I have visited has quite held the same feeling.”
