Jessica stared at the moon for a few more moments and then quickly looked at Nash with a wicked smile filling her features. She took off for the path between the dunes, calling over her shoulder, “the last one there is a rotten egg!”

“Oh that was sneaky,” Nash muttered through his laugh as he watched her dart ahead, but he waited just that little second extra before he took off himself, bare feet digging deep into the sand and kicking it up behind him as he sprinted forward, as best as he could on the sand for the path ahead. Jessica did have the advantage however, her lighter frame meant that she didn’t sink as deep into the sand or maybe, Nash just chose the softest and deepest looking parts to run into.

He couldn’t catch her before she reached the path, and once there Jessica had the advantage of firmer, flatter ground. Still Nash was no slouch and his longer legs powered him along the path and then up onto the dunes beside her rather than reaching out a hand and sending her face first into the grasses she was running alongside, that simply would have been sporting.

They reached the end of the path together, neck and neck with Nash laughing as he began to overtake her. Until he failed to notice the sudden dip in the dunes in front of him as they ended in a drop to the flat sand and down Nash went, managing to roll into a ball as his training had taught him. It wasn’t nearly enough to land on his feet gracefully and Nash pushed himself over from the messy heap he landed in, coughing from a stray mouthful of grasses and looked up to see Jessica on her way to the waterline.

Now Nash did pause, watching her figure and long hair flowing behind her as she made her way ahead of him in the moonlight, and he smiled. The beach ahead of them was perfect, no footprints of any other people marred the sand as she ran, the only footprints leading to her. In just moments it would be only the two of them as his footprints would join with hers.

He was still smiling as he pushed himself to his feet and started after her. She wasn’t that far ahead and he was confident he would catch her, right at the moment she reached the waterline in fact if he timed it right.

Jessica ran as if her life depended on it, enjoying the feeling of the sand squishing under her bare toes as well as the jolt up her legs from the impact of running. When she had the time, she much preferred to run on the beaches of the holodeck as opposed to the other, more boring options on the ship, so this was a natural habitat for her. She considered a quick peek over her shoulder to see where Ethan was behind her and then she blushed lightly as she noted that she also wanted to see just what he looked like running across the sand after her. She stifled a giggle and employed every ounce of self-discipline she had to keep from turning. Her next idea depended on a certain element of surprise, she thought to herself. This time she couldn’t keep the giggle back as the plan developed in her head. Time to see just how light-hearted this Ethan was…

Taking a deep breath and hoping that he was keeping up right before her, Jessica dug her feet into the sand and stopped in an instant and then shimmied over to the side just enough that Ethan would go past her. Obviously, if he was on the ship, he was some kind of Starfleet personnel and she could only hope that the sheer surprise would override what was likely a quick reaction time. The step after he went past her, she launched herself onto his back, knocking him down into the shallow water and then sliding off him to watch him tumble into the ocean. She waded in next to him, enjoying the sensation of the water around her ankles, as she gave him an angelic look and commented, “oops.”

Jessica’s move did catch Nash by surprise, he had been so focused on catching her that her sudden pause letting him go past made him slow and turn his head to see what she was doing. “Wha....”

The result, was that his own pause and turn in surprise unbalanced him enough so when she landed on his back, he had no option but to collapse in another heap as the waves rushed past him. Pushing up with his arms so he was out of the water, he heard her wade in beside him and her cheeky comment meant he just started laughing. “You realize I was first one in, right?” He grinned up at her, turning over and lying on his back in the shallow, warm ocean water. “So I guess that makes you a rotten egg, can’t be me down here.”

Another wave rolled in, the wash covering Nash and floating him slightly but it had been what he was waiting for. As the wave rushed past her legs and shifted the sand under them, Nash swept his arm down and over her ankles, tipping Jessica over and down into the water beside him. He he didn’t let her drop though, catching her in his arm and pulling her in close to him while the wash slid past them both as they lay on the sand. Holding her served him twice, it meant she was definitely getting as wet as him for her antics, but also brought her close to him as he looked into her eyes as he held her to him. Reaching up, he brushed a strand of long, blond hair away from her face while the moon shone on them. “Oops.” He said, mimicking her, but without the innocent look.
