Sam paused for a moment at the entrance to Main Engineering, taking a moment to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the busy department. The familiar gentle pulse of the warp core in the background made Sam smile, it’s reassuring presence never failing to calm and center her.

She slung her kit bag over one shoulder and made her way to the core. She looked up at the column that dwarfed the rest of the room, and closed her eyes, basking in it’s comforting glow. She leaned over the safety rail and placed her hand on the cool, solid, outer casing and couldn’t hide a grin to herself.

“You an’ me are gonna be getting acquainted soon girl, you look after me and I’ll look after you, ok?” She whispered, and then opened her eyes to quickly glance about to make sure no-one had overheard.

Ensign Keene - Engineering JO

EMMA saw Keene as she entered, the soft mumoring to herself caught her attention. She knew some organics spoke to themselves but she never really say it. She also wasn’t certain why she saw the engine room as a girl. Walking over EMMA paused as she cleared her throat, a tactic Jacen had taught her. EMMA was thin, with medium blonde lockes. She had a soft subtle accent as she spoke, making it seem as if she was Australian. The only thing that seemed unqiue about her, was the pendant around her neck. It seemed to be important, but it’s purpose unknown.

“Can I help you Ensign?” she asked her, a soft smile as she looked over the young petite Ensign over.

EMMA

Sam hopped back slightly, with most of her attention on the core in front of her she hadn’t noticed the Lieutenants’ approach until the last moment.

“Ensign Keene, reporting aboard for duty…” she waved the hand holding the datapad with her transfer orders as if this explained everything, whilst surreptitiously attempting to kick the untidy and much battered kitbag (which she’d dumped on the deck in her eagerness to examine the core close up) behind herself and out of view of the senior officer.

“I’m looking for the Chief… I mean Lt. Commander Drayke..... sir.”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“Ensign Keene… yes that’s right I remember seeing your crew transfer. Commander Drayke might be down in the engineering lab, he has been running an experiment with new holographic technology . Some new gardening matrix technology. I don’t know exactly, Counselor Rinker claim it is it’s some need to explore his full desire to build and create, just head down the corridor take a left and you should see the big lab with him and the Ensign.” EMMA paused as she looked over the woman before and wondered if she should inform Jacen he was going to have someone come visit.

Deciding it would be more fun for surprise, something she tried to experience more she decided against such, “In fact I’ll come along if you don’t mind Ensign, give us a chance to talk. I am Assistant Chief Engineer EMMA, I mostly rub the night shifts but I like to wander.” She said offering her hand to the woman.

EMMA

OOC:I made a big boo boo on who was on this shop so fixing the mistake.

Sam took the offered hand and smiled gratefully at the friendly officer that had taken the time to help her out.

“Thank you EMMA, I have to say I’m glad of the help.” She said, waving towards the door so that they could walk and talk.

“I’m a little nervous you see, first proper tour on a real fleet ship.”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“Nervous? Why are you nervous? Jacen is just an officer, like you and me… well less me but kinda of you. I’m sorry I maybe rambling some.” she said as she smiled at walked with her. EMMA never knew what to tell people, her status as a sentient holographic lifeform confused some, and worried others. There was never a right moment to tell someone about their life.

EMMA

Sam shrugged as they strolled out of main engineering, adjusting her grip on her kit bag.

“I dunno if nervous is really the work I’m lookin’ for, ” she pondered, considering herself what she’d meant.

“I’m just very aware that this is my big chance to avoid spending the next 30 or so years of my career flying cargo shuttles full of spare self sealing stem bolts or repairing the sanitation system back on the shipyards, and I really don’t want to mess it up. I know how lucky I got pulling this assignment.”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“That could be fun!” EMMA said, her enthusasim seeminly genuine. For her, all she knew was the ship. Yes they had away missions but but it was never something she picked. Getting to choose where to go and what to do always seemed to facinate her.

Entering the lab, EMMA looked before spotting Jacen in a corner working on what looked like some kind of power coupling.

“Sir, I have a new member of the crew for you.” Jacen turned as he heard EMMA speak looking over the Ensign.

“That we do, and your name is Ensign?”

Drayke, CE

“Ensign Samantha Keene, transfer from Utopia Planitia Fleet yards, reporting aboard Sir”

Sam dropped her battered kitbag on the decking and came to attention, unsuccessfully attempting to rein in her curiosity as she sneaked a quick glance around the engineering lab, trying to get a sneaky look at whatever it was the chief had been working on.

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“EMMA did you get the repairs done to the auxiliary power supplies?” Jacen asked for a second then put his attention back to Keene in front of him.

“Yes sir, anything else?”

“That’ll be all, thank you for escorting the Ensign here.” Jacen said eyeing Keene more.

“So Ensign, talk to me… what brings you to this side of the galaxy? Most engineers kill to be at the Utopia.”

Drayke, CE

“I guess that depends on the engineer Sir.” Said Sam,

“I spent a couple of years there doing mainly cargo shuttle runs or EVA repairs, not exactly cutting edge starship design.”

She pondered how best to explain herself, wanting to get off on the right foot with her new boss.

“I joined up to see the galaxy and work with the best ships in the fleet, if I’d wanted to stay parked at a station in orbit, hauling cargo or fixing up dented hulls I woulda stayed at home.”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“Understandable, so tell me what do you know of this?” he asked her as he moved back the cover. It showed a type III phaser compression rifle. It was in pieces as he looked over it. “How good do you think you are with weapons? Security was asking for some modifications for Borg. A fully automatic self re-modulating assault phaser rifle.”

Jacen eyed her, he was curious what she would take on the request. It wasn’t the normal task but Jacen had wanted to get several of these developed.

Drayke, CE

Sam ran her eyes over the the pieces scattered over the bench. “Standard Type III Phaser Compression Rifle, fitted with the standard phaser adapter allowing roughly 12 shots before the Borg shields adapt, thus making it a very technically advanced club.”

She walked around the bench, eying her new boss speculatively. Was he actually expecting her to come up with a new weapons system on the fly that the egg heads in R&D had been failing spectacularly to invent ever since the Borg had first appeared on Star Fleet’s collective radar?

“The best minds in Star Fleet have been trying to come up with a ‘magic bullet’ for the Borg, trying to come up with ways of re-modulating phasers, and so on. To me that’s like kinda trying to beat a porcupine at an ass kicking contest Sir.”

“I prefer a more old fashioned approach. To quote some old Earth dude, ‘There are very few problems that cannot be solved through a suitable application of high explosives.’“

She grinned, and held her hands together, almost as if in prayer “The Borg drone is slow and relies on their shield tech to get close and assimilate their target. Me, I get a bunch of ol’ fashioned chemical explosives and blow those suckers up BOOM!” She pushed her hands apart making the noise of an explosion as she did.

“Heck Sir, if security wants a reliable way of killin’ Borg, replicate them some big pointy sticks and tell them to practice, cos they’d be better off with them instead o’ relying on one of these things” She waved her hand at the pieces of rifle strewn over the bench.

Sam Keene - Engineering

“Well that is true, but there is alternatives. Have you heard of a TR-116?” Jacen asked her, curious if she knew of the project. Not many uses for this rifle, but there was a TR-116B that had been adapted without the teleportation technology. Jacen wondered if he could combine the weapons in a way and knew he had to have some trial and error.

Drayke, CE

Sam shrugged, an oddly expansive gesture involving both hands being held palm up.

“Never heard of it Sir, they didn’t tend to let us near any weapons R&D back at the yard,” She grinned, “not really my specialty, and my contact with any of the brass tended to be of the ‘when will my ship be fixed’ or ‘why isn’t my personal replicator making my coffee right’ sorta thing”

She poked at the parts on the table, her curiosity getting the better of her.

“So what exactly are you trying to get this thing to do Sir?”

Sam Keene - engineering

“Kill things… far far away… with much efficiency.” Jacen said with a smirk at Sam. “The project needs some retooling but the concept was in energy dampening fields this could fire ballistics and not every weapons. The previous version had micro transporter with visor to see through walls to snipe targets. We did not want to go that route but having weapons that meet Starfleet standards and can be used in situations were energy based weapons can’t is a plus.”

Drayke, CE

“Well.....” Sam paused, running the idea through her head, “if the aim is versatility, you could build a projectile weapon around a mini replicator, and then simply dial up the projectile that fits the target.... armour piercing, explosive, heat seeking, whatever......”

Sam Keene - engineering

“Oh I like the way you think Ms Keene… that… that has promise.” Jacen said as his smile widened. “And you didn’t think you knew enough about weapons. See you can make things go boom just as good as the rest of them?” Jack said enthusiastically as he smirked at bit at the young Ensign.
