Having popped on a pair of sleek black trousers and an emerald green top, M’Lene made her way to Lemann’s quarters with an air of excitement. She was used to other women in particular finding her a little too much to handle. Although she was outgoing and friendly, she had real trouble making friends. She decided to take a bottle of wine with her that she swung casually by her side with her good arm and eagerly pressed the door chime when she arrived.

“Come in!” came a fast response from inside. Jessica hopped up to her feet to greet her guest with a happy smile. “Thank you so much for joining me,” she exclaimed and then reigned in her excitement a touch. “I’m going crazy trying to get to know people on this ship,” she elaborated with a friendly grin. Snatching up the medical tricorder resting on an end table by her couch, she gestured for M’Lene to come in and then snapped it open. “Business first,” she commented, quickly scanning the CSO’s injured arm and shoulder to check on the status of the healing. As she waited for a readout, she added, glancing at the wine in her good arm, “… and then we’ll drown any lingering pain with that bottle of wine.”

M’Lene smiled, glad to see that she wasn’t the only one excited at the thought of making friends. She dutifully and carefully held her arm out for scanning, wincing a little as it was still tender. The scans showed that everything was in the correct position following the somewhat brutal manipulation Dr Ryley had performed but there was still a fair amount of bruising and soft tissue damage which was causing M’Lene some pain and stiffness. She smiled as Jess scanned her arm. “You’re a very dedicated doctor aren’t you?” she asked as she observed the care the young doctor took. “And thank you for your help in sickbay, I wouldn’t like to admit it to anyone but I was really scared…” she added quietly, almost surprised at where the confession had come from. She was not normally one to show or even admit to weakness.

Lt (jg) M’Lene (CSO)

Jessica carefully studied the readout on the tricorder, chewing slightly on her lower lip as she had noted M’Lene’s wince upon holding out the injured appendage. “It looks like you’re healing nicely,” she commented, setting down the device so that she could gently run her hands over the arm, being extremely careful not to cause any undue pain. “While it’s not a fantastic idea to mix alcohol,” she paused to nod at the bottle of wine, “and pain medication, would you like an analgesic? I know that must be smarting a bit still.” Waiting for the CSO to decide, she fetched two wine glasses from a cabinet in her kitchen area and brought them and a corkscrew over to the small seating area. Setting them down on the coffee table, she reached for the bottle of wine and held up the corkscrew. “The doctor says that I’ll handle this,” she noted with a giggle and a grin.

M’Lene gave a pained smiled and nodded. “If you don’t mind doc, that would be good, it’s still pretty sore. I’ll take the risk!” She added with a chuckle.

Jessica gave her a sympathetic look as she turned to a cabinet in her kitchen area and pulled down a small med kit. Loading a hypospray with a mild analgesic, she made her way over to M’Lene and gently administered it. “I’ll be here to keep an eye on you anyway,” she commented with a wink, returning the equipment, including the tricorder, to its appropriate location.

Once they both had goblets of wine, Jessica gestured to the couch and indicated for M’Lene to make herself at home. It was only then that she finally responded to the comments the CSO had made. Taking a small sip of her wine, a delighted look came on her face as she savored it.

“Yes, I love to help,” she responded. “Of course, I’m not sure how conscious you were at the time, but my medicine first Starfleet second priority order made me quite the new friend of our XO.” She giggled lightly and followed that up with a slightly larger sip of the wine, her features relaxing slowly between the delicious beverage and the comfort of friendly company. “I can’t imagine how terrifying it would be to be in that much pain. You really did a number on yourself,” she added. “I don’t think you ever told me what happened. Do you want to talk about it?” Another sip of wine made its way into her mouth as she studied the Caitian, her expression not one of professional curiosity but more of care and concern.

M’Lene giggled as she took a sip of wine. “I don’t remember it but I’ve heard you caused a bit of stir!” She gave Jess a playful nudge on the shoulder.

She paused as the young doctor asked her about the accident. She gritted her teeth and nodded. “To be honest, I’m not really sure what happened. I was practicing a gymnastics tumbling pass and I got disorientated. I remember seeing the floor approaching fast and just instinctively put my hand out.” She shuddered as she relived it. “I heard it crack then the rest of me landed on it. The funny thing is for a few seconds I thought I was fine but I’m guessing that was shock.” Her lip began to quiver and her eyes filled with tears.

M’Lene didn’t like feeling out of control but the accident had really rattled her confidence, in fact she’d barely been out of her quarters except when she was on duty. She quickly took another swig of wine and sighed. “…I was really scared…” she added quietly.

Jessica had clearly begun to relax but as she digested M’Lene’s story, concern floated across her face again and her medical background nudged at her.

“Did you tell Dr. Ryley about the disorientation? You seem like an experienced gymnast, so I wouldn’t expect that to be a common thing,” she asked. “I don’t remember it coming up when you first came into Sickbay, but we were pretty busy getting your injury stabilized and then I was called away by Commander Nash.” With the mention of Nash’s name, her cheeks turned slightly pink and her eyes took on a brief sparkle. But, as quickly as that had come on, it disappeared as she made a conscious effort not to think about the CTO who she had traipsed around the beach with. Besides, she was annoyed with him anyway for his Sickbay antics.

M’Lene grinned as she saw a little flicker on the doctor’s face at the mention of her friend. Rumours were always rife on board a starship but she got the feeling they were possibly more than friends. She mentally filed it to bring up once they’d had a couple of drinks as she thought about Jess’ question and sheepishly shook her head. “No, I didn’t say anything, I didn’t really think of it at the time, I figured I was just tired…why, do you think it could be serious?” she asked as a concerned look came across her face. She felt her pulse quicken as she thought back and tried to remember exactly what had happened.

Lt (jg) M’Lene (CSO)

Jessica noted the change in M’Lene’s breathing and heart rate visually and shook her head quickly. Way to put a kibosh on the evening, she thought, chaistising herself.

“Anything serious would have come up on the scans we did in Sickbay, but it’d probably be worth another visit to double-check,” she commented evenly and soothingly. A wicked smile came over her face as she continued following another large gulp of her wine, “besides, it seemed like you might like to stop by and see Dr. Ryley again…” Her voice trailed off as she raised an eyebrow at M’Lene.

M’Lene breathed a sigh of relief as she took another sip of wine and gave a cheeky smile at the mention of Ryley. “He certainly is an interesting character…” she said, the smile spreading as she kicked off her shoes and popped her feet up on the sofa, hoping Jess wouldn’t mind. “So come on then, what’s his deal? I keep trying to talk to him but he just kind of blanks me? What are my chances of getting him out on a date?” She asked with a mischievous giggle.
