“Well.....” Sam paused, running the idea through her head, “if the aim is versatility, you could build a projectile weapon around a mini replicator, and then simply dial up the projectile that fits the target.... armour piercing, explosive, heat seeking, whatever......”

“Oh I like the way you think Ms Keene… that… that has promise.” Jacen said as his smile widened. “And you didn’t think you knew enough about weapons. See you can make things go boom just as good as the rest of them?” Jack said enthusiastically as he smirked at bit at the young Ensign.

“Oh things often go boom around me Sir” she said with a grin, “sometimes even on purpose!”
Jacen looked at her cautiously as he wondered if he should be worried. “Boom you say? Well.... lets keep you on non engine duty?” he said with a smirk as he teased her some. In all fairness Jacen was known to blow up his fair share of things, once he took out a whole shuttle in dry dock. It was in a simulation though, but Starfleet Engineers were quite peeved he mixed up the ratios to cause them to reset the whole program.
“The key to the gun idea is the name obviously.... let’s call it the ‘piece maker ’”

“Piece maker? I mean… I was thinking something like the pew pew… simple elegant… scream sophistication.” he said, keeping himself calm as he looked at her it was hard to tell which was he was going with this, the tone seemed dead pan but what chief wants to name his tool the pew pew? Still as he looked at her the faintest of smirk spread to his lips as he elbowed her playfully.

Sam tried her best to keep a straight face as she responded, “weeeeelll we could fit some speakers and add a sound effect when it fires, like an old timey movie ray gun right?”
Her eye twitched as she tried to hold back the laughter and keep her poker face.
“Then you could be all ‘pew! pew! pew!’ when you shoot it....”

“Oh that’s good… that’s very good. I like the way you are thinking… we could give it lights too… flash bang them and disorient them! Okay scratch that new name… the ‘Dazzler!’ what do you think?” Jacen liked an engineer with a sense of humor. So many people would kiss his ass not be able to loosen up but she seemed far different.

“Hmm it’s good but I think we can do better.... I think we’re approaching this project from the wrong angle here....” she paused to adjust a none existent pair of eyeglasses and make a note on an imaginary pad.
“Clearly we gotta think form over function here, we need to come up with the most bad-ass looking gun we can, THEN worry about how it actually works right??”

“Oh don’t let Captain Schultz hear you say that. That woman will be the death of me of form over function. She wants too many things pretty and then wonders why they never work. Now I don’t mind some glitz and glamour here and there but she tends to go overboard. You should hear the story of our new table in conference room. Her efforts for form over function cost me 10 hours of work and having to learn to read Ferengi.” Jacen said, he liked Kelly but she was hard at times when it came to technology.
