“I’m from lots of places I guess, my family owns a small maintenance station and a few cargo haulers. Since I was big enough to hold a hyperspanner I’ve either been crewin’ ships or fixin’ em.” She shrugged.

“I guess we didn’t always have the same safety standards as you guys, but beggars can’t always be choosers when you’ve got to keep food on the table and fuel in the engines.”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

Ryley smirked as he ran the tricorder over the ensign again for a more detailed scan. “You’ve had all your shots now I take it right,” he asked. “Can’t be dealing with a wild engineer running around the place.”

Ryley
MD

“Oh yeah, I’ve been poked, prodded, and dosed by your colleges at the Academy, guaranteed 100% rabies free, free range engineer..”

Sam tried to crane her neck a little to catch a look at the tricorder, wondering why a second scan had been necessary. She had work waiting for her and although the Doc seemed a bit less starchy than most of his colleges, it still irked her that she had to sit quietly while he went through her whole life’s history… at least the bits that had made it into her file anyway.

Ryley looked up and her and purposely moved his tricorder up so she couldn’t read it. He bopped her on the head with the hand held scanner. “Ah Ah Ah…” He said “we must learn to hold still while Doctor is examining.” He admonished.

“So, what’s up Doc?”, she said, trying to keep the impatience out of her voice and keep her expression neutral as she’d learnt to do at the Academy when dealing with Star Fleet protocol and red tape in all it’s manifest glory.

Ensign Keene - Engineering

“Nothing.” He said honestly as he cross referenced the scans with her file. “Just intrigued. Both by your little accumulation of treated ailments and also about how long it’ll take you to get annoyed.”

Ryley
MD

Sam bit back a retort that would have involved inquiring whether the good doctor was a colorectal specialist and therefore qualified to remove the medical tricorder from where she intended to place it if he ‘bopped’ her with it again.

“Are you kidding? You’ll have to work a lot harder than that to annoy me Doctor, I’m pretty sure my senior academy instructor was a specialist in the field.”

Ryley smirked. “don’t you worry kiddo, I’m not even warmed up yet.” He quipped back.

Despite his condescending manner, Sam found herself warming to the Doctor. At least he wasn’t the usual diagnostic computer dressed in a blue uniform that Star Fleet medical tended to turn out in her admittedly limited experience, and actually appeared to posses a sense of humour.

“So am I good to go, or have you got any more little ‘tests’ for me?”

Ensign Keene - Engineering

Ryley finished his scans. “I’d happily run more tests If you want but…” he checked his time piece. “…my soaps on in thirty five minutes. If you like I can run a quick bio scan or update two or three shots…just whatever’s in reach of course.”
He turned to look around him and picked up another implement and held it near her head. “Now…try to hold still. If this gets jerked then your ear drums are gunna go pop.”

“Now, as you were saying? Something about annoying people?”

Ryley
MD

Ooc: Sorry somehow ended up losing half my post last time.

Sam eyed the instrument approaching her head skeptically.

“No need the deafen me Doc, I can put up with your jibber jabber without goin’ to that kinda extreme.... have you found that you have a high ratio of ear injuries in your patients though?” She asked, with insincere sweetness.

Ensign Keene - Engineering

Again a smirk. “Only the ones who are both stupid enough to either be option a) move and option b) BETH” he lifted his cane and taking the bottom of it in his hand pulled it up and hooked it around a nearby rolling stool. He sat for a few minutes in scilence while the scanner made noise at Sams head and read her service record on the PaDD.

“So…bit of an attitude problem are we?” He asked eventually.

“You can relax.” He added looking up. “ it’s not actually doing anything it’s for recalibration hypos.“He tossed the thing back onto the tray it came off of. “Sit up.” He told her and stood himself. Once she was in a sitting position he brought his hands to her neck and began palpating her glands the old fashioned way.

Sam sat up and gave the Doc a curious look with one eyebrow raised as he started fiddling with her neck.

“If you’re tryin’ to do one o’ them Vulcan nerve pinch thingy’s Doc, I gotta tell ya, ya need to work or your technique a little, cos’ I’m not even feeling drowsy over here.”

Sam Keene - Engineering

Ryley smirked. “Since your a low tech kinda gal I’m giving you the benefit of a low tech kinda exam.” He explained as he continued. “So…are you or are you not a bit of an attitude problem?” He asked again.

Fishing in his pocket he pulled out a tounge depressor and a penlight with he clicked on with a grin, “open.” He said pointing both at her mouth.

Ryley
MD

“Attitude problem?? Arrrrrruuuuugggghhhh ahhhhhhh bllaaaaahhhh moooooo gaaaaaaahh!!” Sam replied as the tongue depressor was thrust in to place, stifling her verbal response, although her glare told the story of several expletives that may have been lost in translation.

Sam Keene- Engineering

OOC: Bump, welcome back Doc!

Ryley raised his eyebrows. “Wow that was convienient i didnt even have to ask you to say Ahh for me.” He said cheerfully ignoring her clear distain for the exam as he peered at her throat and frowned then tutted his tounge in a sort of ‘dear me’ noise. He removed the objects.

“Yeah bit of a pest as far as the higher ups are concerned. ” he clarified as he put away the penlight and waited.

Ryley
MD

“Pest? Me?” Sam said, pressing a hand to her chest in mock surprise and innocence.

“Only til I learnt how things work in the Federation and Star Fleet, since then I’ve been no bother to anybody Sir” She made a complicated salute with three fingers of her right hand, “Space Scouts honour”.

Sam Keene - SPO and Space Scout Troop Leader

Ryley smirked and chuckled lightly. “Don’t call me sir. It’s Doctor Ryley or just plain Ryley.” He told her. “And how do you think things work?” He asked seemingly genuinely interested.

Ryley
MD

“The Federation is a society where we all work for the benefit of everyone as a whole.”

Sam leant back on the bed, putting her hands behind her head in a relaxed pose.

“Me? I’m down with that, but I also think that it’s important for an individual to have those little things and experiences that only benefit themselves, cos it’s those little things in life that help fill in the gaps if ya get me?”

She winked at the Doc, “so if you ever need any of those ‘little things’ you let me know, I’ve been known to locate certain things from time to time.”
