Finally where I belong. Dan thought as he entered the Marine area of the ship. It was colder and more military, and therefore to Dan, much more homey. He found the OIC River Styxx. “Lt Styxx? 2nd Lt Vladar reporting for duty.”

-2nd Lt Dan Vladar

River was in the armour cage. She was checking over her battle armour. It was scratched and entered. A testament to the battles she had fought and how she always lead form the front. Her armour was nothing remarkable the only noticeable detail was a characterised reaper on the right shoulder.

“If you don’t keep an eye on your armour it can get less efficient. especially when it’s sitting in storage awhile.”she said as she got up and turned to the Vladar. River was wearing her black undershirt and her camo cargo trousers, her jacket was hanging off on of the pegs on the wall. she surveyed the man in front of her.

“I believe it is customary to salute your superiors, when meeting them” she said sternly “I hope it is just a small one time lapse” she added.

“Yes sir.” Testing me. How far will I bend for superior officers?

“So your the my new second in command. Have you stowed your gear?” she asked.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

“Yes sir.” He tapped his combat armour. On its right shoulder, three deep scratches were filled in with paint. “Everything is stowed and ready for use.”

-2nd Lt Dan Vladar

River nodded “Very well. you are assigned armour locker 4, equipment locker 4 and armoury cage 4. I conduct random, unannounced inspections of all my marines equipment. As my second in command i expect you to make sure your equipment is f a higher standard then the rest of the marines. If your armour fails then you will be cleaning it and everyone else’s” she said as she walked over to her armour locker and put her armour away. Even though it was beaten up it was still immaculately clean.

“Put your armour in your cage and meet me outside when your done. I’ll give you the tour” She said as she turned to leave.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

Dan caged up all of his equipment. All of it was battle worn, but well-maintained. As he locked up his armour, he traced the three scars on it with his fingers. Sometimes he wondered if becoming an officer had been worth it. Or if he should have died as Sgt Vladar.

He emerged and found River. He saluted, per regulation. “Sir. All equipment in assigned lockers.”

-2nd Lt Dan Vladar

River returned the salute then started to walk at a brisk pace “As marines signed to ships, our tasks and responsibilities are different form ground or even starbase based marines. We are here to assist the security personnel and officers. with everything form security drills to repelling boarders. However if you ask me we should be the ones in charge of security. If Marines are assigned to a ship they should have overall authority on matters of security. Despite my feeling we have a strong bond with the Security officers. we respect each other. I do not want this endangered in anyway, so teat the security officers with the respect you think they deserve.” She said as he came to a door, two marines where standing outside on guard, as soon as they saw river the snapped to attention and saluted.

“Good show gentleman” River said as she walked in. the room they had entered was one of the barrack areas. it was a vast room with bunk beds going all the way to the back. terminal where in between them. the room was filed with marines, chatting, playing chess and arm wrestling. Two marines were in front of them testing who cold do the most press ups.

As soon as one of the marines sighted River she shouted “Officer on deck” In a split second all the marines stopped what they where doing and fell in at their bunks, snapping to attention. River walked further in and stopped in front of the marine who had shouted, she had staff Sargent stripes. she was also one of the marines doing press ups “Well met. staff Sargent. i trust you beat private Valk” she said simply.

“Naturally Ma’am” The staff Sargent replied a half smile on her face.

“Good. i have brought a new marine to day. I’ll let him introduce himself. he will be my new second in command” she said turning to the gathered Marines and then gesturing to Vladar to introduce himself. how he did that was up to him.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

“Sir.” He nodded to River then looked back at the barracks. “Marines. I am 2nd Lt Dan Vladar, formerly of the 105th Marine Infantry. Yes, I have a cybernetic arm and eyes. The story goes; small space plus grenade. Beyond that, don’t ask. Lt Styxx and myself seem to share a philosophy. Respect your comrades, respect your station, and you’ll do fine. Let’s get to work.” He looked at River.

-2nd Lt Dan Vladar

River nodded “Short and to the point. good” she said approvingly/ “I want you to meet a few of my key marines. This is staff sergeant Necro. she served with me on Acheron. you want something done speak to her.” she said gesturing to the staff sergeant they had just spoken to. River moved further in she then found a marine holding a sniper rifle “This is corporal Bullseye. the second best shot in the battalion. Only beaten by me.” she said nodding at him

Dan greeted each in turn. “Sergeant. Corporal.”

She then turned and headed for the door as she did she stopped at one more marine. he was different then the others he was scared all over but the big difference, he was a Gorn “This is the quartermaster Sklor. All equipment and supplies go through him. he inspects it then gives me the report then i sign it off. if he doesn’t like it i won’t either. clear” she said sternly.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

“Clear. Quartermaster already processed my gear.” He looked at Sklor. “Care to report?”
“Broke down the rifle in 15 seconds. In perfect condition. Armour in near perfect condition, three combat scratches, filled in with paint. Everything else, like it was fresh out of the box, but serial numbers put them at four years old.” Sklor seemed slightly disappointed. If for no other reason than Dan’s gear had been uninteresting. “I keep my gear in combat ready condition at all times.” he reassured River. When nightmares keep you from sleeping, consistent gear maintenance is easy.

2nd Lt Dan Vladar

“I see” River said as she got closer to the door “Sklor also checks any personal equipment requested by you. So if you get a box from home he’ll scan it and make sure it’s safe. But he won’t open it.” she said as she walked. “I have noticed several indications in your file that you suffer from PTSD. Is this correct and if it is does to effect your combat ability. I don’t have room for a marine that freezes in a fore fight.” she added.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

Dan’s eyes narrowed a little. “Sir. I am still a battle qualified marksman. I’ve been in active service for four years since what psychiatrists refer to as my ‘traumatic incident’ without issue. You will note in my file that I was given a Medal of Valour and promoted from enlisted to officer status in that time. As well as the obvious Purple Heart. I still shoot expert on the rifle range and that carries over into combat. And last year I took an advanced tactics and strategy course. If my ability to serve the Federation is ever compromised, you will be the first to know. Sir.” River had touched Dan’s one sore spot. It had been four years and still people questioned his ability to serve.

-2nd Lt Dan Vladar

“I have a hundred marines that have medals. I myself have a purple heart with cluster and the captain Christopher pike medal of valour. Medal and stats don’t mean a dam thing if you can’t pull your weight. I’ve had marines who suffer form PTSD seem fine one minute, then get triggered and become useless the next because of a random set of triggers or situations. That when people get killed and i will not have that.” she said sternly .

“I’ve been fine in active duty for four years. One mission gone sideways does not mean I am a liability Lieutenant Styxx.”

“However for now, i will trust you. However if you don’t do your job I will shoot you myself, and leave you to rot” she added it was clear she was deadly serious.

“Now before we continue do you have any question for me?” she asked.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

Just out of River’s view, Dan was flexing his metal fingers. He had grown tired of officers assuming things about him based on a personnel file. He’d worked hard to serve well despite his injuries and psychological issues. But none of that seemed to count. “Sir. I’ve never been posted long-term with Starfleet. How do joint ops work? Do we have our own missions?”

-2nd Lt Dan Vladar

“Yes and no. While we have an over arching mission of keeping the ship safe. we are shackled to where ever the ship goes, making it hard for us to have our own mission.” River said simply “It also spends on the location where you are serving. If you serve on a star base you will be mainly there as an addition to security and the front line of defence for the space station, larger number of marines are stationed on starbases. So you will have your own missions. if your assigned to a colony, that is where you have the most to do. As a marine you patrol the colony, work with star fleet to set up defences, get assigned to the command centre and many other things. That way you free up security and the local police to focus more on on keeping law and order. you also get a chance to have your own missions.” River said simply.

“Then you get to star ships. in truth we don’t have a whole lot to do. we are and attachment to security. we assist them. We can be assigned to away mission but we’ll usually still be tagged with security.which in my opinion is stupid, if you go down to a planet all the protection for that away team should be marines. however that’s my opinion. We are still the front line of defence for the ship however. We are also here to by the spear head if we need to board an enemy vessel or take it.” River added. it as clear she wasn’t a huge fan of how marines where used on a star ship, bit she had her orders and she would follow them.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

“So, just clear the line of fire so Starfleet can do their scans. Not that different from most of the joint ops I remember. Most of my previous assignments are to Marine bases, but we still had to babysit from time to time.”
