Next Morning

Morning came and Chris felt himself drifting awake from his sleep tonic state as he looked over to smile at the sight of Lexi still next to him. Kissing the top of her forehead as she slept he edged ever so closer to the edge of the bed as he reached for the pen and paper that laid on the night stand. Writing a small note he smiled as he laid it where he had laid next to her as he left out the door. The note once read said the following.

“Lexi,

Didn’t want to wake you, was hungry and wanted to get us breakfast, maybe even a cannoli.
I will be back shortly, I can’t wait for our lives to start a new with you in it my love. Sleep well
and know I will be back before you know it.

Love, Chris”

Lexi woke feeling like a kid again. That carefree, excited about the day feeling one possessed when they were too young for adult responsibilities but believed they could take on the world. Moving her hand behind her, it only took a second to realize Chris was not curled up on his side. “Chris,” she called out his name sitting up slightly. Absent from the room was the typical sounds like the shower or outdoor ambient noise from the balcony indicating someone else was there. “Chris,” she called out again this time looking around. His clothes were gone which made her heart sink slightly. Flopping back she then noticed the slip of folded paper flutter some. Tucking the covers around her chest she picked it up and read it.

A smile formed on her face as all the doubts that were bubbling up in her mind evaporated. Bringing the note to her lips Lexi kissed it while letting out a hearty laugh. Why she thought he would not be here in the morning seemed ridiculous. He had made her a promise and while many adjectives described Christopher Robins the one that stood out to Lexi was loyalty. He had promised her the world last night. Turned out this morning he was just serving it to her on a platter.

A soft knock at the door made Lexi jump up and sprint across the room. In his hurry to leave and not wake her, Lexi assumed Chris was on the other side of the door fumbling to get in. “Coming,” she said. As her hand reached for the door controls Lexi stopped it. With her luck, Chris would not be alone. Leaning into the small bathroom, she grabbed the thick robe on the hook and threw it over her body. Better to be safe than sorry. Fluffing out her hair and striking the classic seductive pose of leaning against the wall with one leg bent so your eyes trailed up the slit in the robe hoping to see what it was hiding Lexi opened the door. “Hello sexy,” she purred out before snapping back to reality.

“Noah,” she said softly before throwing her arms around his neck. “I am so glad you came.”

Dining Hall

“Okay you think this is a good idea? Really? One night just… ask someone to marry you… that’s not normal.” exclaimed Ian as he sat across from his best friend as he shook his head at the very notion.

“Look, I was going to do this six years ago, I have loved her for ten solid years and she loves me… why shouldn’t I?” Chris asked as he looked down at the ring he held, it was a gorgeous silver engagement ring with a center stone that matched the pendant he gave her so long ago.

“Look, you two have never done things normal and I know my sudden trist with Kelly seems like I might be a bit hypocritical but we are still taking the time… I didn’t put a ring on her cause one night of passion doesn’t equal a lifetime choice. I am in love with her… but there is a rhyme and reason to how and when you should do these things” Ian countered as he popped one of the grapes in his mouth and felt like things were bound to implode once again if someone didn’t help his friend here.

“Look… I love you man… your life is just different from me. I want you and Kelly to decide what is right for you but… my gut says this is right for Lexi and I… it was right six years ago if Noah hadn’t....” said as he paused as he looked past Ian at the crowd behind him.

“What?” asked Ian as he looked behind trying to see what stopped Chris dead in his tracks, it was then that he noticed the image. Noah, he forgot that he was going to be here as well. He wished he had warned Chris he knew this but so much had happened in 72 hours before the conference he had such little time. “Look, he’s a science officer too not strange is it?” Ian asked as he looked back at Chris.

“No… but we are in a city twenty minutes away from the conference in a hotel resort that wasn’t one that the conference used… what is he doing here of all places?” Chris said as he grabbed the large bag he had with the food, placing the ring inside the big as he put it under his arm as he stood up. Noah seemed to be leaving the dinning area heading to the lobby and the lifts.

“I… will be right back.” Chris stated, with a small tremor seeming to be in his voice as he began to make his way back to the room he had shared with Lexi.

Five Minutes Later

Chris came by the door, slowly he entered hearing voices coming from the room, both of them he knew as he braced himself as he listened in.

“God I can’t believe you found me here of all places but I can’t say I am not thrilled,” Lexi’s voice was low. Nothing in her voice indicated she was sad, nervous, or any other emotion than happy.

“Sir,” the waiter from last night called out spying his most troublesome guest lurking at the door. Today he was dressed as a bell boy. The man said he wore many hats here and apparently it was every hat the hotel could stick on his head. After last night he was sure the young woman would have given Mr. Robins a key but one never knew with couples. What he didn’t want was a homicide on the property. Whatever was going on between Mr. Robins and Ms. Garfield, seemed not to affect her plans to roll in another gentleman no sooner than the first one had left. “I trust your stay has been a pleasant one,” he asked hoping to mask the bits of conversation drifting out of the partially cracked door.

“Does she love you like I do,” Lexi’s voice drifted through the door. Her tone was questioning as if she desperately needed the answer.

“I took the liberty of extending your stay until noon as a late checkout but I need you to sign here,” the waiter said extending a PaDD. He needed to stall or at least create some noise out here to alert the young woman in the room her first beau was present. Clearing his throat loudly, he scratched his nose and muttered the single word, “allergies.”

“Stop,” Lexi let out a loud laugh and giggle. It was the laugh Chris could always invoke when he was tickling her or pushing her to the point of happiness where her smile lit up a room and people seem to feel good just being in the same space as her. “Don’t worry about Chris? He is not the topic of conversation right now, is he? You are.”

“Wonderful weather,” the bellhop/waiter blurted out.
