Dan didn’t like doing this. But he crossed the bridge and approached the CO’s ready room and pressed the door chime. It’s for the best.

“Come,” Kelly said swinging her feet off the edge of the desk. “Okay so me and you are gonna have so much fun soon,” Kelly was wrapping up her comm call and motioned Vlader in as she spoke. “I am gonna give you the biggest ball ever and we are gonna go lay out on the beach while I rub your belly so be a good boy okay and tell your Daddy that Mommy is so excited to see you okay Bruce.” Clicking off the call she looked up at Vlader. “Lt. what can I do for you? Something to drink,” she simultaneously motioned to the open seat as she made her way to the replicator.

Captain Kelly Bordeaux

“No. Thank you, sir.” It took long, deep breaths to draw the words out.

Kelly slowly walked back to her desk with her coffee on edge. Something was wrong with Vlader. The man had confidence in spades. Right now his actions were that of someone nervous or leery of breaking news to someone else. Kelly’s gut reaction was Vlader was assuming the posture of * It’s not you. It’s me*. Every woman knew this posture and what came after. Since she was not married to the man, it had to be about the job. She did not speak but went to her seat and gave him a look asking for him to continue.

“Captain. My time with the Marines is almost over. A week left. I have come to the decision that I am not going to re-enlist.”

Kelly instantly recoiled. “No. No, I am not going to sign off,” she leaned back. “You are an amazing officer. The private sector seems appealing but trust me it is not what it is cracked up to be. Who offered you a job? OMAP? Trust OMAP is not the way to go. Sure they offer packages covering beautiful models and actors traveling to exotic locations where you just sip drinks with little umbrellas but trust me that is not what you want.” Kelly leaned forward trying to appear more sympathetic. “I have met Aedan Teller. The man is handsome, dashing, exciting. He can you sell waterfront property on Vulcan with a smile and you are going to pay not only what he is asking but also tip him. I am not saying he is bad. The man is a brilliant businessman but you do not want to get hired with OMAP’s security forces.” Kelly waited holding her breath to see if anything she said changed his mind.

“That said, I don’t know any other life. Sir, I’m…” he fell silent. “Captain, 2nd Lt Daniel Nathan Vladar officially submitting for transfer.” he held out a PaDD detailing a transfer request to the USS Atlantis, Security Department.

“Ugh no,” Kelly leaned back with a far more dramatic flair than if Dan had come to her office not saying he was leaving her staff. There was no way she was going to lose him to OMAP. The company was notorious for spiriting away the best, strongest, and toughest security or marine officers Starfleet had once their hitch was up. Kelly need Dan. His record was impeccable and her career on the rise. It was going to rise with Starfleet and not some private security firm. Looking at him slumped in the chair slightly. Kelly drummed her fingers on the arm of her chair. She had no power to actually conscript Vlader so the least she could do was look at his paperwork.

Taking the PaDD, she glanced at the subject line. Captain, 2nd Lt Daniel Nathan Vladar officially submitting for transfer to the USS Atlantis, Security Department. Oh? Oh! Kelly sat up taking a far more Captain like stance. “Well then,” she squared her shoulders looking over the request. Kelly would have made Vlader the head Dentist if he had asked. Talent was talent no matter what they were doing. Looking at the request she just had one question.

“Why are you looking to transfer?” Kelly was going to sign off and had to resist not just singing the document and handing it back. There was far more to a job than just being good at it. People needed to be happy.

“Sir… there’s a level of comfort that comes behind all that armour. Invincibility. I can disassemble and reassemble my rifle blindfolded. But all that serves to make us separate from the Starfleet crew. I don’t like it. If I’m going to serve with Starfleet… I need to serve with Starfleet.”

Somehow the confident Vladar returned. “I’ll take whatever post I get. But I don’t brown nose my way up. I come over as an ensign, fine. I’ll be a lieutenant soon. On service merit.”
