Kelly took her seat at the table waiting for all the officers to arrive. Looking at the orb on the table she thought back to what the Lorn had said. The Lorn Ambassador stated that it was designed to self destruct if you tampered with it. “So no basketball,” she slowly said staring at the orb. The faster her officers arrived the quicker they might find an answer

Kelly Bordeaux

OCC: I said all senior staff but if you want to come to participate in the main sim you are more than welcome. ~ Kate

“What about shot put?” Nash said as he slid into a chair. “That could be fun.”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

As the doorbell ranged, Kai had those slide to each compartment and the room opened wide invading Kai’s pupils with new lights
“Ensign Kai reporting in. May I join? I would like to take notes about senior staff stuff.” Asked to the present people in the room “also the CSO invited me as she said she may be late.” He added

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

Ashlynn walked into the ready room and took a seat. She had a PaDD in her hand for notes and updates on what she had going on in Main Sickbay.

Mardusk came through the doors and found his chair, settling his bulk down with a heavy sigh. “Captain.” he said with a nod Kelly’s direction. “Everybody.” he added flatly. He then looked at the orb and said “Well. That looks like a ball of trouble. Thanks for seating us next to it, Skipper.”

Mardusk, CoS

“No problem. SInce Jacen seems to be late to the meeting he drew the short straw to shake the thing,” Kelly laughed taking a sip of her coffee. Leaning back she decided to catch everyone up on what she knew. “Okay boys and girls this is what we know. This was given to us by a race called the Lorn. They said if we tamper with it it will self destruct but that it is also highly intuitive. So I am out of ideas besides yelling open sesame at the darn thing. Scanning a ship almost caused an intergalactic incident with the race that gave us this so I think we should try a different approach to open it. Anyone with ideas past the open sesame? Anyone. Beuller, Beuller, Beuller,” she called out the name from a famous archaic movie looking for someone to come up with an answer.

Kelly Bordeaux

“So we cannot either touch it, nor open it with normal procedures. Had you tried to talk to it calmer? Maybe it does not like you shouting like a gazelle.” He laughed and apologized to the Captain “jokes aside if we cannot open it maybe we can try to scan it. It is not touching it, Captain.” Added

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

Kelly let out a large laugh at Kai’s comment. “Gazelle Ensign,” she shook her head again chuckling.

“It seems we can touch it but not tamper with it. Otherwise, how did it get in here” she said blandly looking at the CSO “However if we cant analyze it using normal means. How about a hologram, then it’s not technically us doing anything to it. We could even move it to a cargo bay so just in case things go south we can send it out to space.” she added. It was an interesting problem but all a concerning one.

Lieut Styxx (Marine CO)

Entering Jacen came in seeing most of everyone already in. “I don’t like this.” he said looking around at everyone as they stared at him.

Drayke, CE

OOC: I didn’t see a direct question being asked of the Orb?
GM

“Oh you don’t like anything Drayke,” Kelly waved off her chief. Waiting until he sat down she tugged the table slightly so that it rolled an inch away from where he was. The truth was the table being on wheels was a terrible design by IFEA so Jacen had built in a locking mechanism. This kept the table securely in place except when a senior officer decided to be a dork and move it just to irk the other people around it. Sending Drayke a side smirk, Kelly turned her attention back to the orb. “Okay, Ian you are up. Don’t screw it up. We have no idea how many questions we get. It could be like a genie lamp.” Kelly took a long sip of her coffee and waited.

Captain Kelly Bordeaux

Ashlynn looked at the orb “So did the Lorn give us any indication as to what it might possibly do, beyond self-destructing if we tamper with it.” She asked, “I can’t see that scanning it would be considered tampering with it, but that would just be my opinion.” S

CMO

“Oh, you want me to ask the question?” Ian said as he looked up at Kelly then back to the Orb. “Okay…” Ian said as he paused wondering just what to ask. Many of the thoughts seemed way too obvious, but what else was he to do if he didn’t ask the obvious? “Here goes nothing.”

Picking up the orb Ian looked at it like it might be a bomb as he pondered, “What is the safest route away from this region of space?” Ian said as he shrugged looking around at them, unsure if this was even going to work or not.

Ian Bordeaux, Chief Diplomat

Lexus looked to Ian then the orb. She really didn’t like this at all. As Ian spoke his question she looked at the orb. she was trying to fugue out how to get everyone out safe if it went wrong. She had no idea of the yield of the explosive, what it was made of or how to contain it. she hoped it wouldn’t come to that though.

Lieut Styxx (Marne OIC)

The Orb had an internal anti gravity function and hovered as Ian picked it up. “That question has too many variables please add data points, like - What is your destination?”

Lorn Orb
GM

SEAI allowed herself a hint of a smile. “It seems that some critical thinking is needed for the usage of this orb. Captain, it is my recommendation that we do not allow you to be alone in the same room as this due to your.... special logic.”

SEAI (XO)

“Oh wow! The orb can speak!” Kai exulted of happiness like a kid when a gift was given to them “And also, it seems to be intelligent by itself. I wonder if it made of some kind of circuitry behind.”

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

“Would have sucked if it had been in morse code,” Kelly laughed, “and I make sense. You just have to think like me.” Staring at the orb she began to run all the loose bits of information in her mind trying to form the big picture like they taught you in the academy. “Okay its looking for a destination,” she drummed her fingers on the table. “Home is too obvious and we know from the Great One it is out of reach for traditional routes. When my team met with the Lorn ambassador the gave us a run down on the major players of the system.” Standing up she moved to the large wall PaDD bring up the notes she had been typing in since her arrival back on the Atlantis.

“The Lorn ambassador told us there are six main players here. The Lorn Empire is the oldest civilization but private and don’t share well. No one knows the home world but I think the orb could show us their territories. The might have the tech means to get us home. The Great One said he is trying to help us but like a friend that owes you money, we haven’t seen hide nor hair of him since we got here. The Nine seemed like religious zealots that aren’t super friendly. I am not sure how much help they could be because praying is not going to do anything for us right now. The Alfians are political weasels so we finally found Admiral Perkins home world. The Caste are strong, reclusive, and private but seemed to like us so far. Maybe its because they trounced the other civilizations here a while back so they know not to mess with them. The Dilgar are highly aggressive and the Enodorians are just a bunch of non-aligned worlds. My gut says since we are basically throwing a dart at a board we go with the Caste. We ask the orb to get us to their home world and go from there. I have tended to have the best results with people that aren’t preening peacocks telling the world what they can do. Usually this means they can practice what they preach. Any thoughts or objections,” she asked the crew letting her gaze fall on each officer in the room. They would all be looking at it from their own unique angle. Kelly was a macro-manager. She had no problem making a call but realized if you did not trust in your people or discounted their consul, you were just looking for a disaster.

Kelly Bordeauxx

Kai have not followed not one of the word of the captain. Her way to speak fast and the long dialogue made him being lost after “The Alfians are political weasel” but was afraid to ask again what was the plan.
“Uhhhh… so, what is the plan?” He made a stupid face “We pew pew or… orb stuff?”

OOC: ahaha I read everything Kate! I am just making Kai the “this is my first day among High Ranks so I am not practiced” guy

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

“I am always ready for the pew pew but that is Mardusk’s territory,” Kelly nodded at Mardusk.

Mardusk scowled at the orb and then looked at the Captain. “That makes me a bit nervous, Skipper. Randomly picking out a home world from one of these groups… it’s too random. Maybe if we could get a chart of the major trade routes through this sector, see where and how all the players move about, we can get some idea of basic stellar cartography and some of the more regularly visited destinations.”

Mradusk, CoS

“Good point,” Kelly said. As the Captain, she was in control of the final call but everyone was flying blind here.

“So what exactly is this orb supposed to be doing?” Ashlynn asked feeling very stupid “What are you going to need from Medical?”

Summers (med)

“Answering questions and your job is to be ready to administer first aid if one of us gets electrocuted poking at the thing,” Kelly replied to her CMO.

The orb continued to hover. The mid-line glowing purple then fading to pink and then to red before going back to purple. It seemed to move slightly closer to the Captain then back towards the Ian as the person who spoke to it last.

GM

“Well Lt. Commander Bordeaux it seems to have a crush on you,” she replied to Ian as the orb pulsed and changed colors like a club light. Kelly looked at the orb and thought about its color display. Traditionally pink meant to love. Red meant anger. Purple was a mix of the calm of blue and the fiery energy of red. The color stood for sensitivity, compassion, understanding, and supportiveness. All these things were traits of the person you came to when you needed help. Maybe the flashes of color change was indicating the orb was irritated with them.

“Why can’t we do both? The Lorn didn’t say it was a magic lamp. Hopefully, we have more than three questions. Orb show us the coordinates of the Caste homeworld. Then show us the major trade routes of the dominant civilizations. While you’re at it bring up any information on the Great One,” Kelly began snapping out questions. She threw out questions like this at every staff meeting waiting for her officers to reply. If the orb was a computer of some form, it would have to be able to at least three questions.

Captian Kelly Bordeaux

A three dimensional map came up with certain areas with more detail than others but the Caste Home-world was identified with a arrow and the coordinates. Approximately 287 light years away was a dot that represented the Atlantis and Base 5 . On the map was the major trade routes through the sector with different colors indicating each of the major races. Base 5 was a significant trade hub.

For the Great One the orb responded verbally in a voice that sounded like crystals tinkling off each other. “The Great One is an honorific for the last known survivor of a race that predates the information base of this system. The Great One is believed to be over 1000 years of age and is viewed as benign by the majority of the races of this quadrant and only rarely interacts with the Lorn. The Lorn race does not have an official position in regard to this individual.”

“The Great One visually appears differently in a form similar to the race that he/she is encountering. The one thing that consistently identifies him/her is his craft.” An image of the relatively small craft appeared and spun on all three axis.

Lorn Orb

“Mr. Drayke, can my ship make it 287 light years,” she asked the engineering chief?

“At maximum warp, we might be able to get to that distance in a week… but that would mean pushing our engines to the max nonstop for that time. Warp engines aren’t meant to be sustained at 9.99 for long periods of time… but I can suspect you are going to tell me to find a way, am I right ma’am?” Jacen said with a slight head bobble at the idea. This woman is going to be the death of me. Jacen thought to himself, she always thought the ship could do far more than it could. It had limits, and she always wanted to test them.

“And that is why you got a promotion. You do the impossible Mr. Drayke. I am positive you won’t let me down. If you need more people let me know who,” Kelly said.

Given the damage to the ship… there is zero chance she can get to warp 9, much less maintain it. At the current level of damage, you can presume warp seven is the same risk as going to warp 9 normally.

“Congrats Mr. Drayke for on place promotion!” Cheered Kai for his mate

Tapping her finger on the table she looked at Ian. “This Base Five looks like its the central transportation hub. Someone tell me that is not the one we just had to use escape pods from,” she rubbed her knuckles. Maybe she did have something for Ashlynn to do. The adrenaline of the fight, escape, and hubbub of arriving back on her ship had dulled everything. Now that she was sitting and returning to some semblance of neutral her hand was killing her. A large angry purple knot seemed to be forming across her knuckles. The first thing first was to find a direction to head into.

Kelly Bordeaux

Drayke, CE

“Hey guys, If we need to move rapidly toward a place maybe we could try to open a subspace aperture and use it to move around the subspace. Indeed with less power we could go faster in the subspace dimension.” Suggested to the CE and to the Captain “but, it will require the deflector, shields harmonics modulator and the nacelles coils to be modified. Also we will not be able to move forever in the subspace dimension, or otherwise our matrix will change forever and adieu normal space. What do you think?”

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

GM

OOC: I am unfamiliar with the subspace aperture you are mentioning. If there was a means for a ship to move faster than warp that the ship could do themselves wouldn’t that be their means of transport?

“Is the physics doable, ” Kelly asked the table. She knew enough physics to understand when engineer explained something. She knew enough to aid in repairs if the occasion called for it. She did not know enough to come up without of the box solutions like her science and engineering teams did.

Captain Kelly Bordeaux

“I don’t know much physics, but have feeling it wouldn’t happen” River said simply “The ship is damaged as it is and that sort of thing sounds like it would be difficult for a normal ship. let alone us as we are.” she added. River didn’t really know a lot about engineering however she knew damage, and the Atlantis had been pummelled.

Lieut Styxx (OIC Marine)

“How much it will take to repair the 75% of the ship, Mr. Drayke?” Asked to the CE “if we manage to have a good integrity, the maiden voyage into the subspace might be possible. We have the energy and the power, as calculations says, to make this trip. But we will need at least a functional hull and a stable warp 6.8 for the plans to work out.” He said to the whole commission.
He was certain that it could be done but certainty were needed to proceed.

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

Hull integrity is the hardest thing for the engineer department to fix as that requires large cross sectional hull pieces. Things that they can’t do ‘by hand’. Other internal damage would take time and power for the replicators. Those other things would take weeks… some thing are parts that can’t be replicated on board. The multi-deck burned out power conduit can’t be replicated, for instance.

GM

As if on cue a comm message came through from engineering. =/\=Sir,=/\= the voice said not sure who was in the room she was reporting to past her chief. =/\=We have been evaluating the hull integrity the best we can but as you know to fix it will require large cross sectional hull pieces. This is going to take a dry dock or at least some equipment we because we can’t do some of this by hand. The internal damage of relays, consoles, power conduits, replicators....Sir the list is longer than you have to hear and a few are gonna take weeks because we don’t have some parts even on board. The damage is multi-deck so the long and short,=/\=

“Is that we are going to have to head to that trade center first,” Kelly indicated on the map. They would have to visit the Caste after if they could even get there. =/\=Do your best crewman,=/\= Kelly said to the engineer officer as she clicked off. “So we go to the trading outpost,” Kelly confirmed again to her crew taking a long sip on her coffee.

Captain Kelly Bordeaux

Responding to her undirected comment, the holographic map that the Orb was projecting lit up a star-base in orbit of a planet 92 light years away.

SEAI pulled up a list of those who went on the previous away mission. “I would recommend the department heads at least briefly speaking to those who are selected to go about the trade centre. After what happened during the last mission, it might be prudent to get some semblance of organization.”

SEAI (XO)

GM

The whole issue of where to go might have become secondary for a moment.

=^=Bridge to Captain, we are picking up a faint distress signal. It seems to be a transport or freighter being attacked by pirates.=^=

GM

“Oh great!” Kai waved his hands in the air “if getting damaged was not enough now we need to intervene with those pirates. Great.” And immediately headed to the bridge and went to his post. Clicking a bunch of buttons, Kai looked at the screen and awaited orders by the Captain.

Ensign Kai O. Kingstone - CSO

“Everyone to their stations,” Kelly said getting up and heading the the bridge.

OCC: I am going to move this to a new thread. Everyone stand up and follow me ;) Kate

Ashlynn simply nodded and headed back to sickbay, wondering exactly how that Orb was supposed to help them with their mission. She was certain that they would eventually get the entire story, but that was for another time.
