Two hours into third shift, Lera rolled the chair thru the front door of Security. “I need to put this in the Chief’s office and take the old one.” She said to the skeleton crew in the bay.

The Lieutenant watch officer waved her in and said “Work order?” and then whistled at someone behind him. The second officer came forward. The first said “Chief’s new chair, scan it will ya?” and the second one nodded. The first looked at Lera and a small grin crossed his face. “You the one Chief got into it with?” he asked with a hint of of understanding.

Security

She slid the work order up onto the table, realizing it was the drill up here. She stepped back so the chair could be scanned and nodded with a shrug. “Yeah… that’s me.” She watched to be sure the chair would be cleared.

The scan was clear, and the Lieutenant said “You can leave it here if you don’t want to deal with him. I’ll take it in and have the other sent to you guys.”

Security

“I don’t mind,” she frowned slightly. It wasn’t right, to her, to just leave it here. Realizing who was standing there, she took a breath. “I don’t mind taking the other chair now.” She reiterated her statement trying to hold her tongue. Why make it such a big deal? She could roll this one in, roll the other one out and be done with it.

He just nodded and said “Ok.” and gestured to the door. He pressed a button on the console and said “Chief, Engineering here for you.” There was no answer, but the door slid open.

Security

She closed her eyes. of course he was still here. Her heart sank and she opened her eyes and smiled halfheartedly at the security guards. “Thanks…”
Moving to the doorway with the chair, she looked at Mardusk. “Ummmm, Chief… Your requested chair. Sorry it took so long. But I only did get here a couple days ago.” She was half smiling as if she was attempting a joke to explain why the order hadn’t been filled in so long.

Mardusk looked up and gave her a half smile. He waved her in and stood up. As the door closed, he said “Welcome back, Lieutenant. If you spend much more time here, I may start to think you like us.” and he gave her a half smile. He came around the desk and looked at the chair, then turned and grabbed the other and lifted it up and over the desk with one arm. Setting it down, he said “Let’s take it for a test run, shall we?” and he rolled the new one around and put it behind the desk. “Fingers crossed, Lieutenant.” and he lowered his bulk into it slowly. Nothing happened. No groans or squeaks. No signs of it simply collapsing under his weight. He looked down at it and bounced lightly a few times… then he looked up at her and smiled broadly. “Fantastic job, Lieutenant. Thank you very much.” and a flash of mischievousness shown in his eyes. “I’m sure me and the quadruplets on my lap will be much more comfortable.” and he grinned.

She laughed at his comment. “An engineer…like security? Sorry, Sir… isn’t there something in the Regs against that?” Her breath hitched a moment as the old chair came, one handed, over the table. She recovered instantly and gave the new chair a shove towards him, watching him sit down. “Glad I could help,” she said and nodded, her hands resting on the back of the old chair, about to wheel it out. His comment about the quadruplets made her turn to go. “I promise no more jokes unless I know the facts, Sir.” She said, grateful he couldn’t see her blush. “It’s late… I’ll let you be.” She headed out of his office with the old chair rolling before her. It had certainly taken a beating from the large man who’d occupied it. But it whole be reclimated and turned onto something else, in time.
