“Its fairly unremarkable as far as ‘space’ goes.” He shrugged. “There are a number of trade lines that run almost like spokes of a wheel around Base Five. This point is both far enough away from the Base so it can’t protect us, but close enough so we can’t really avoid it on the way. Not to mention there is no way of knowing that there pirates haven’t camped out that trade route as well.”

Ashlynn nodded “Have you and the others thought about banding together and creating an alliance that might give you some protection when you’re out here?” She asked thoughtfully, wanting to help these folks as much as she could.

Once the others were out of earshot and gone, Lera turned to the Engineer she had been working on. “Ok, so what else is wrong? I mean, you don’t strike me as someone who gives this,” she nodded to the fabric, “to everyone who helps change a plug around here. So what’s really the matter with the ship. Lemme help while I’m here.” She smiled and nodded to the main engineering space behind her and shook her head. “She needs to take care of you while you are out here, so let’s make sure she’s fit to do so. Shall we?” She had a few more minutes before folks started looking for her. So she set the bolt down along with her large tool box, grabbed the smaller bag out of it and waited to be shown what they had been dancing around.

Wel’sworth gave her a sidelong glance. “There’s always something to fix.” He said noncommittally. He started towards the aft of the ship. “The other damage you can’t significantly improve.” He glanced about as he moved.

“Your ship is remarkably fast considering its power out put.” After a moment they found themselves in the engine room. “We have many ships with greater power but none can match your speed.” It didn’t take Lera even a moment to determine one of the key problems was that this ship didn’t use dilithum to focus their antimatter stream. They used lithum and a crystal that had some similarity to diamonds.

Lera scanned the system and nodded trying to hide her surprise they weren’t using dilithium. Since it was a discovery that could significantly leap their technology, she couldn’t bring it up. But she had an idea. She scanned the crystal to see if she could find cracks or impurities. It was a simple enough thing and didn’t interfere with her maintaining the Prime Directive. Simply showing something that was broke wasn’t a big deal… she hoped.

Lera’s scans determined both items were reasonably pure. Certainly there were items that were better in refinement, but that was an issue that they probably were fully aware of, this was a cargo ship after all. There were some very minor alignment issues that could result in a fractional improvement, but nothing that would even vaguely resemble the vast power improvement even one crystal would cause.

Ashlynn touched her comm badge “Lera how are repairs coming?=^= She asked before she reported into the Atlantis again.

CMO

=^=About to head back to your location. All done here we can do for right now.=^= She smiled to her host and nodded to the crystals. “If you reset the alignment specs to this,” she showed him on his own consoles, “you should pick up a bit more power and improvement in function. It won’t be much. But it may help, some.” She picked her bags back up and patted his arm. “You got this. This is your ship. If you have an idea for an improvement, no matter how crazy it seems, run the sims. Believe it or not, these babies are born to engineers in offices at desks, but they grow, evolve and get better out here where it’s needed.”

She smiled once more and said her goodbyes to everyone before following her crewmates back towards the CMO.

The chief mechanic doubted that that Atlantis got all of its extra power for very fine alignment. What he would do to get on the ship for a few minutes to look at the engines… and that gave him a thought. “If you intend to return to that wonderful ship of yours I wouldn’t mind a tour. Perhaps to relieve you the guilt of the gift you received.

Jen came on again … =^= Atlantis to Shuttle Odin. Status report please. =^=
- Jen, XO

Lera laughed. “Come on… it’s up to the Chief. But you are welcome to ask. But please, don’t get your hopes up. My guess is you won’t like the answer.”

She lead the man back to the CMO and nodded to her as she arrived. “I’ve done all I can in Engineering, Ma’am. This is the Chief Engineer. He is curious about a possible tour of the Atlantis. I told him it had to be your call.” She stepped back to let the two of them talk, handing her bolt of fabric and tool box to one of the NEs at her side who offered to take them.

“I will stay out of the way.” He nodded hopefully. “I will be as quiet as a Tau Elf.”

Lera laughed. “I don’t know what a Tau Elf is, but I’ll take your word for it.” She wasn’t crazy about the idea of him setting everything, but it wasn’t her call to make.

The Mechanic looked at the doctor hopefully.

=^= Atlantis to Shuttle Odin. Sit-Rep. What is your status? =^= came the call again.
Jen, XO

Lera stepped aside to answer the XO as the CMO dealt with the request. =^=Atlantis, Lieutenant Brison, we are fine. Wrapping it up here.=^= She wasn’t sure just what would transpire so no point bothering the XO with it.

Lera
Eng

=^= Estimated time of your departure? =^= Jen inquired. =^= We show four ships of the Nine which is the same as your friends in the freighter in relative proximity who will be able to assist them. We are standing on station at this time. Recommend you wrap up there and return. =^=
- Jen, XO

The shuttle could leave at any time. They were over an hour away at warp 6

=^=We’ll be leaving in a few moments, Sir. And we’re less than two hours from you.=^= She wasn’t sure how fast they’d travel, but giving herself the extra time meant she wasn’t rushing anyone else. After all, she didn’t have the clout to do such things.

Lera
Eng

=^= It looks like the cavalry has arrived to escort the freighter now. Mustn’t overstay our welcome. Transmit when you are away and there on board give a status report. =^=
Jen, XO
