Jen held up his hand. He had been vague on the word ‘old’. “Noted.” Standing he pointed to the carrier. That would take a significant refit for engines based on dilithium powered warp cores. Every technology builds on another. One doesn’t simply have a duranium composite hull without first working their way through other alloy discoveries and means of smelting a composite duranium alloy hull. Andor began similarly to Terra with crude crystalizations of dilithium that were prone to stresses and the like if the engines were pushed and too much energy went through their crystal structure. Over time they worked better and better methods of quantum recrystalization that allowed greater efficiency. All that took two centuries of evolving dilithium technology. Dropping that on them would be like leaving a communicator with the Iotians - they worked it but it took a lot of time for them to develop it.”

He took a breath and continued. “My proposal is to start them off at a tech level where they can sustain a dilithium warp engine which is likely closer to Kirk’s era than ours, and let them R&D it. To give them what we have is to hand them a great deal of supplementary technology necessary to work it. We’re selling them the size, not the speed.”
- Jen, XO

Lera had been doing scans with the probes on the chunk that was slowly tumbling away. It gave her an idea. “Sir,” she turned to the XO, “another though is to help instead of give. If they sheered off the asteroid because they need the chunk, perhaps the chunk was too big for them to move? Or perhaps they needed the asteroid itself and the weapon shattering it meant it was too much for them.” She laughed and tried to hide her embarrassment. “I’m not saying we turn into pirates for the sake of it, Sir. But if we have the capability to move, or fetch or grab something that drew them to this region, perhaps that may be help enough? Like having your large cousin carry something in as offering when you couldn’t move it yourself.” She knew it was a long shot, but the idea of trying to give them just enough tech to help, but not enough to cross the line of breaking the Prime Directive, sat a bit more easily with her conscious. “Or maybe something more simple to give like a couple probes set to seek out whatever they need in a field like this where their ships are too big too get into. Doesn’t take much to program a computer to launch, recover and read a probe.”

“It is possible that they do not have tractor technology. That is not an intrusive tech and is possible for the list,” Jen said, assessing Lera. She seemed uncomfortable with her suggestion. “Turning the ship into a work horse is not a bad idea. Helping has a way of impressing more so than just giving. If they have to do some heavy lifting we may be able to help there.”

Jen stood and moved around the bridge. “We’re not facing a conflict of the prime directive here,” he said, speaking into what some might be thinking. “They have solid warp drive. It’s just big. They have a lot of technology. They have … ” he gestured to the Orb. “.. things we don’t have. The care for us is that we do not unbalance the powers in the region. If we provide a better warp tech to the pirates, I would be inclined to leak it to another to sustain that balance.”

He added, “Another concern that we have is - where are we and how do we get home? Having trade with the locals is needed but we don’t belong here. We’re a big fish in the pond but there are many who would nibble at us for what we have.” He pointed at the carrier. “Them included. They would not hesitate to take what we have - right now they see a soft target. Provide materials and trade for the tech and they do not risk undue damage. It benefits them to play nice right now.”
- Jen, XO

OOC: There is truth there, size of some of their tech is an issue… and the Lorn did appear to have tractors, the Great One used as shielded tractor beam on the Atlantis (what seemed a lifetime ago), but none of the lessor races demonstrated a tractor beam.

OOC: Bump … Gene

As he looked at the viewscreen, Jen’s fingers rubbed at his chin. ‘I hope they’re not thinking of making trouble’ he thought to himself as he considered the away team there. ‘Though that would be characteristic of the Captain’. He sighed.

“Tactical. What is the status of that carrier? Shields? Their fighters? Any news from the probes?”

“Open a channel to the Away Team. Only one way to find out if there is any dilithium about. Ask the locals.”

When a channel was opened, Jen said, =^= Atlantis to Away Team. =^=
- Jen, XO

OOC: I know a lot of non-game time has passed, but the shuttle team is going a lot slower than you guys are. As to keep the timelines synched I have to report there are no changes with the probe the two fighters were in pursuit but not doing anything special.

There was no responding carrier wave from the landing party. Although they could detect them in a group on one of the decks. They were not moving and they were clusted together a little tightly, too tightly for a formal meal. The ship does not have shields they used magnetic hull polarization for defensive purposes. The effectiveness is about 10-20% of the Atlantis.

=^=Atlantis, How can we help you… as per negotiated terms, your crew were to not have access to communications off ship, much like what you did to our crew when they were aboard yours. However as a courtesy we can convey any message you would like.=^= The internal comm jamming was not highly specific or advanced but it was effective.

GM

Jen cursed silently. He had not been aware of that provision with him being on the bridge through this. However, this could work out even better.

=^= No, thank you. That is not necessary. In fact, you could help me by cutting out the unnecessary politics. I’m transmitting to you a chemical composition of a mineral that we are seeking. Can you compare that with your databases and let us know if and where such minerals may be found? =^=

He turned to the comms. “Transmit formula for dilithium. Let’s see if we’re in luck.”
- Jen, XO

There was a pause… =^=Ferrite Gems… It is rare and isn’t significantly mined. May I ask what value is this information.=^= the answer was more straight forward than what they would have gotten from Alfo, but wasn’t completely transparent either.

GM

Inside, Jen made a small ‘yes!’ then replied, =^= It may just be your lucky day. Is it easily mined? Are they small crystal deposits? =^=
- Jen, XO

The officer looked to the side confused. =^=I don’t even know that… they are scattered on the surface when they are found, I don’t think anyone have ever thought of mining them, their value is dubious at best.”

Jen rolled his eyes. Amazing how some things could be laying about with their abilities undiscovered. But that is such the case with so many things. =^= It is something that we value back where we come from. They seem to be rarer there than here. And rarity does command more value. =^= He tried turning the discussion more to the value as a gem for now until they could find where they were talking about. He cut the sound again then turned to the Orb.

“Orb, where are Ferrite Gems found?”
- Jen, XO

Oliver continued to watch the conversation go back and forth with so far little progression, he wonders just how much they’d be able to get out of it at all because so far it seemed very little ground had been made. It was clear that they knew what they wanted and the crew didn’t want to part with it. Continuing his scans Oliver remained the silent observant type for now.

  • Lt Oliver Loughty, CSO

He signaled to mute the transmission. “Okay people, we have a job now. I need from science and engineering how we might extract and tackle an introduction of dilithium into their technology. Engineering .. on a scan of the carrier, can it be converted in their design? Science, with what we know of dilithium mining, how can we adapt crystals to retrofit a working drive?”
- Jen, XO

GM

Revna was listening to the conversations around her. Alfo’s provision about communication had been in the conference room, being recorded and watched. Odinson, Mardusk, Nash, Ian, the Captain, had all been aware of it, why no one told the XO was beyond her. And then fully taking part of the blame on herself as well. It had been a long time since she was in the middle of tactical conversations and she’d dropped this one. That was on her, and the rest of them as well. “Alfo was surprised and slightly impressed we were able to disable their weapons and communicators. He took the weapons in stride, knowing he’d do the same if he could. The loss of communication irritated him. So it’s tit for tat. We took away their communication he’s doing it to us.” She considered, “This officer is willing to talk. It could be he is eager to get information to pass on to Alfo and Shade to earn favors or importance. It goes without saying that if we give him the information as to why we really want it that he will tell Alfo and then we loose that as a trading point. He is very interested in our weapons, which the captain made very clear she won’t trade in. He wants our engine specs and transporter technology, would be my educated guess based on his comments. We don’t have much else that they want.”

She grinned, “We could say that your woman wants them since they are so scare and precious where we come from. They don’t have to know why she wants them. Alfo and Shade were quite amused by the the Capt and her husband arguing in the conference room. Alfo seemed to particularly sympathize with the captain about working with their spouse.”
