Evrilla examined Tatyl, trying to determine if she was presentable. Her daughter’s short bob was neat, and her outfit was a miniature version of Evrilla’s own, reminiscent of Starfleet uniforms, in the same blue of medical, but both of them were clearly civilians. She nodded, straightened her own jacket, and pressed the chime on the counselor’s office.
-Evrilla (Pathologist) and Tatyl (Evrilla’s daughter)

“Please come in.” Upon entering the office it was very subdued. The harsh grays and blues that came standard were replaced by earth tones of browns, bronzes, greens, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. There were several areas to sit, couches, chairs, floor pillows. There didn’t appear to be a desk anywhere. The shelves were filled with pieces of art and memorabilia that honored her heritage. The pictures were a mix of landscapes and abstracts, carefully placed around the room so as not to clash with each other. The shelves also included an array of different objects, from singing bowls, to art supplies, to mandalas. There was also a computer interface to allow patients to choose the background noise of their choice.

“Please have a seat Lt. I’m Lt. Revna Edman. “
Lt Edman, Counselor

Evrilla nodded politely and sat down in one of the chairs. Tatyl plopped down on the floor next to her, leaning her head against her mother’s leg. “I am Evrilla, Civilian Medical Consultant. This is my daughter, Tatyl.”
-Dr. Evrilla & Tatyl

“Hello Tatyl. If you’d like I bet there is something on those shelves or in the cabinets you might like to look at or play with. You’re welcome to investigate if you like.” The shelving unit contained a wide variety of materials to help in medication and reflection, but a few child appropriate items as well. If needs be Revna would move their talk down the hall to the pediatric office to give Tatyl more to do. “It’s nice to meet Evrilla. Would you or Tatyl like something to drink?”

Tatyl looked at Revna and shook her head. “No thank you. I’ll stay here.” Evrilla smiled slightly and rested a hand on her daughter’s shoulder. “We’re alright, thank you.”

Revna nodded, some children preferred to not explore and she seemed at ease for the moment.

Retrieving any requests Revna returned and sat down. “Tell me what brings you out to Atlantis?” Atlantis was big enough to called a starbase with warp drive. There was something on board for everyone.
Lt Edman, Counselor

Evrilla’s mouth tightened slightly. “We needed to leave, and Starfleet needed specialists willing to go far from their homes.”
-Dr. Evrilla & Tatyl

There was pain there and a tale to tell, eventually. Evrilla, like anyone else, had a past, but she also had the right to choose who she trusted and when to trust them. If it was a security concern, she was sure Star Fleet had already looked into it and Odinson and Mardusk would already be aware. She could broach the subject of why she needed to leave, later. “So what do you specialize in Evrilla?
Lt Edman, Counselor

Evrilla smiled, pleased. “Pathology. For all our advancements, diagnosing was still difficult.” She gestured to her eyes. “The limitations of an entire species being blind. I had a unique opportunity in being able to see what was on the scans.”
-Dr. Evrilla

“I’m curious, and I hope this isn’t offensive, I don’t mean it to be.” Revna loved learning about new cultures and peoples and it was a genuine question born out of good natured curiosity. “How did your people conduct research without sight? I understand as a people you are very telepathic.”
Lt Edman, Counselor

Evrilla shook her head quickly. “Not offensive at all. We used scanners of course, but a great deal was simply trial and error. You learn what something feels like until you can recognize it, then pass the feeling onto your students.”
-Dr. Evrilla

Revna shook her head, trying to wrap her head around the idea. “It always amazes me how different societies develop in such different ways, with different methods, or in this case ‘senses’ but we end up with the same results, or same…essence of life.” She smiled not quite finding the right word to convey her thoughts. “Have you had time to check in or find your quarters yet? Or to tour the ship? Atlantis has so much to offer, it can overwhelm some and create excitement in others.”
Lt Edman, Counselor

Evrilla flushed lightly blue. “We have not. I haven’t even met the CMO yet.”
-Dr. Evrilla

Seeing the slight flush, Revna smiled kindly. “Don’t worry about it. Everyone has their own way they like to check in. Would it help to continue this discussion while we walk? I can show you around the ship and the things that you might need to find quickly.” She turned to Tatyl, “How old are you, Tatyl? Would you like to see where the school is?”
Lt Edman, Counselor

Tatyl stood up when she was addressed. “I’m 8. I’ve never been to school, Amma always taught me at home. I’d like to see it, but I’m not sure if I want to go.” Evrilla gave a grateful nod to Revna. Tatyl caught her mother’s nod and grinned. “Amma doesn’t talk much, but Grandpa Jeda says that’s okay because I do it enough for both of us. She wants to see the ship too.” Evrilla flushed again but didn’t deny the comment.
-Tatyl

Revna smiled, Tatyl seemed very sweet and was very polite. “That would put you in my sister’s class. She’s the early education specialist, so she teaches all the way up to 8 year olds. And if Amma wants to teach you at home, that is perfectly fine.” She turned her gaze back to Evrilla, “There are lots of activities planned for the children in the school rooms outside of school hours if you would be interested in those.” She turned back to Tatyl again, “Would you like to go see the school area first? Then maybe....hmmmm…the arboretum? I understand they have an amazing tree house in there. Our Botonist, CSO Lt Loughty loves his plants and always has something interesting going planned.”
Lt Edman, Counselor

Tatyl seemed to think for a minute. “Is your sister as nice as you? If she is, she must be a good teacher.” She looked at her mother, asking for permission, then nodded to Revna. “I like plants, so that sounds good.”
-Tatyl

Revna leaned forward and dropped her voice to a stage whisper. “She’s even nicer. But don’t tell her I said that.” Revna stood up and headed for the door. “The classrooms we’re going to are on deck 15.” She led the way to the turbolift and glanced at Tatyl, “Would you like to give our destination?”
Lt Edman Counselor

Tatyl looked at Revna skeptically. “Do you talk to the ship to do it? How does it know you have permission? Would I be using your permission? Can it track me?” Her questions got more exaggerated as she went on, and Evrilla rolled her eyes fondly even as she mouthed “Sorry” to Revna.
-Tatyl

Revna just smiled at Evrilla. She didn’t mind. Revna loved kids. It was the one regret in her life, that she’d never had any of her own. She turned to Tatyl and nodded, “That’s right. You just talk to it. ‘Computer take me to…’ ” Revna let her voice trail off and a moment later the computer chimed in “PLEASE STATE YOUR DESTINATION.” Revna nodded to Tatyl to go ahead.

”…Deck 15?” Tatyl spoke slowly, not quite sure she had remembered the correct location.

“Well anyone can work the turbolifts unless the captain has specifically said that you can’t. The computer knows because of this,” Revna pointed to the combadge she was wearing, Evrilla was wearing, and Tatly as well. “These badges not only allow us to communicate, but help the computer identify who you are and make sure you are in areas designated safe for you. Using the combadge we can track you. We can also, in an emergency, have the computer scan for your specific bio signs to find you.” During the ride Revna tried to answer as many of Tatyl’s questions as possible.

On deck 15 the lift stopped and Revna led the way down the corridor and toward the education suite on the port side. She passed the first door, “This room is the nursery. Mr Mikhail is very nice and he loves babies.” She stopped at the next door and pressed the control and stepped in when the door opened with a woosh and lots of noise. It was obviously play time for the youngest children. “Ms Runa?”
Lt Edman, Counselor

A moment later a woman, looking EXACTLY like Revna walked over to the door. The only difference was Revna was in uniform and this woman was not. And Revna had beads braided into her copper blonde hair. “Revna!” she hugged the other woman with a smile.

“Runa, this is Tatyl and her mother Evrilla. They are new on board. Tatyl is 8 wanted to know if she could check out the school rooms. She usually learns at home with her mother, but she was curious.”

Tatyl waved, not shyly, but quiet in the presence of so many people.

Runa turned to Tatyl and smiled, “It is very nice to meet you Tatyl. You are welcome to come in. This room is for the littlest kids, but that door right there,” she pointed to an open door, “is my classroom. Ms Jones needed a quick break so I came in here. You’re welcome to to go explore.” She led the way around the smaller children who all had something they HAD to tell her now. She spoke to each very quietly and very briefly reminding them of their manners and (because little children have short attention spans) listening to what they needed to tell her. At the connecting door she turned to Evrilla and offered her hand. “I’m Runa Edman, I teach the 6 to 8 year olds, but I’m also over the whole early education team. I think it’s wonderful you teach your daughter at home. That’s how Revna and I grew up.”
Runa Edman, Teacher

Evrilla smiled, and shook Runa’s hand. “I occasionally wish she had gone to school but needs must.” She searched for her daughter for a moment only to find Tatyl hesitating just beyond the door.
-Dr. Evrilla, Tatyl

Runa followed her gaze and studied Tatyl for a moment before walking over and kneeling down to talk softly with her. “Lots of new people, huh? It makes me nervous because I don’t know what’s going on and I don’t know anyone. How about we go this way,” Runa stood up and offered her hand in a casual way that Tatyl wouldn’t feel imposed upon. She pointed to another door in the middle of the back wall. This door was part of an enclosure that spanned all three classrooms. Runa led the way inside only for Tatyl to discover that it was a mini arboretum. It spanned all three classrooms with a door leading to each. The wall facing the classrooms was nothing but windows. Tatyl would be able to watch the classroom without, mostly, being seen until she was ready to go in. There were two other children inside, from the older classroom, watering and feeding the plants who smiled and waved in welcome to Tatyl but didn’t invade her space.

Tatyl gasped upon seeing the plants, turning to her mother. “Amma! There’s so much.” She waved back to the older kids, walking over to observe.

Su’kna, a 6 year old Klingon girl, smiled as Tatyl walked over. “Would you like to help?” She picked up a device with a long rod that tapered to a point with a box on the top with a digital display. “I use this to see how much water is in the soil. Ms Runa says it’s called the moisture level of the soil. These plants are called cactus. They live on Earth where there isn’t a lot of water and so I have to be careful not to give it too much. Some plants are okay with too much water but these aren’t.” She offered the device to Tatyl to try with the next set of plants and showed her how to use the readings to decide how much water to give them.

Tatyl rocked on her heels for a moment, caught between her wish to help and a lifetime of observing. New experiences, she thought and nodded firmly. “I’m Tatyl.”
-Tatyl

Runa turned back to the door and continued speaking to Evrilla, “We offer outings to the holodeck, or parts of the ship that are kid safe, or mini lessons, on off days so that children that don’t regularly attend the school can participate. The ship recently had an encounter with ‘pirates’ and the children were fascinated with learning the history. I’ve planned some holodeck time to take them to learn how an old sea faring boat works.”

Revna laughed, “I suppose you’re recruiting me to help with that, and our brother kin too?”

“You have no choice, but yes I’m hoping to corner him into agreeing too.”
Runa Edman, Teacher

Evrilla laughed at the sisters’ easy byplay. “Tatyl is… unused to the children. She could not attend an Aenar school, and I was unwilling to take her into Andoria’s center. Unfortunate but necessary.” She tilted her head, watching her daughter. “Instead, she attended school in a science lab. She won’t touch anything unless you explicitly tell her she can.” She was, in a way, acknowledging that she trusted Runa, in a way she hadn’t trusted the entirety of Andorian society. “I have faith that she will choose to attend school, although her education has been… skewed toward biological sciences.”
-Dr. Evrilla

Runa smiled, “When it comes to science we use a self discovery method. So the children get to learn about whatever they are interested in. We do have topics the teachers pick. For instance we are learning about how lunar objects affect the tides on planets, to go along with our study about boats and how ancient sailors used the tides.” She glanced back into the main rooms to make sure everything was still calm chaos. “You are by no means required to enroll Tatyl in the ship’s school, but if you and she would like to try it out for a week she’s welcome to join us.”
Runa Edman, Teacher

Evrilla smiled, somewhat self-deprecatingly. “Her education has been reliant on me for far too long.” She paused for a moment, swallowing nervously. “She wishes to learn combat, as is both her right and heritage, but I cannot teach her the Ushaan. I had hoped, perhaps there would be another. If you have any recommendations, I would be deeply grateful.”
-Dr. Evrilla
