Revna got up from her couch, moving slowly to the desk where her console was flashing with an incoming message.

It was from Cpt Jameson. On the screen was a tall but older gentleman with deeply tanned skin and black hair that was now more white and grey than black. “Hello Revna. Everything is on track, but we’ll actually be arriving earlier to the rendezvous coordinates by two days. We are no rush, but your condition isn’t one that you shouldn’t take advantage of being able to move up the date of your surgery. Everything here is ready to go and I’ve been keeping up with your doctor there, and you seem to be doing well, you’re as healthy as you can be for the surgery. I’ve sent a message to your sister, she’s taking care of adjusting your flight plan. We’ll see you soon, Princess.” Revna grinned and shook her head. She loathed that nickname, but the familiarity of it brought a kind of peace. Jameson was more than the top doctor in the fleet and an outstanding captain; he was like the older brother she never had.

Runa placed her bag down inside Revna’s quarters and looked around. “We’ve got leave in the next few hours. I took care of all the arrangements and you’ve been on medical leave since the beginning of the week anyway. I’ve cleared the earlier flight plan and the pilot was able to still take us.” She looked around Revna’s quarters and picked up a picture of the two of them when they were kids. Revna walked over and put an arm around her twin and rested her head on her shoulder. “Seems so long ago doesn’t it?” Runa nodded, put an arm around Revna’s shoulders and kissed the top of her head. “We’ve got a couple hours?”

Runa removed her arm and nodded. “Yeah. Everything okay? Do you need help packing?” Revna picked up the small medical case the held her medication and dropped it into the duffel bag. “This was it. There’s just…someone I want to see first.”

Runa waggled her eyebrows at her sister. “It’s Mike isn’t it?” Revna grinned and nodded, but looked incredibly sad. Runa hugged her again. “It will be alright. Didn’t he tell you he made some executive decision that everything will be fine and not to stress it? I’ve seen Big Mike. Nothing and No One is going to stand up to the man. Except maybe the security chief.”

Revna stood outside Mike’s bar. The noise, the volume, the press of people. Oh she knew it was because it reminded her of that day in the mess, but that didn’t make it easier. She took what would be, she hoped, one of the last short breaths she was forced to live with. She didn’t take time to contemplate it, too much. She walked through the doors, letting them close behind her before moving towards the bar and sliding onto the stool at the end of the counter.
Revna

Mike smiled at her from behind the bar as she came in and took her seat. He then looked back at the two Engineers he was serving and set their drinks in front of them. He grabbed a rag and began to wipe off his hands as he came towards her. His eyes met hers and the smile of his face slid slightly away and his eyes narrowed slightly.

“Hey you. I was just thinking about ya. So that either means I am psychic… or from the look on you face something is up. And I’m not psychic… so what’s up?” he asked and leaned forward on the bar across from her, his arms crossed flat and his face expectant.

Big Mike

What was that age old comparison about Bar Tenders and Counselors? “The Centurion is ahead of schedule, way ahead. I’m leaving in 2 hours.” She leaned heavily against the bar. “The ship will wait, but Jameson thinks it would be better to move the procedure up.” The next night was supposed to be her turn for dinner. “I wanted to know if you’d take a rain check.”
Revna

Mike’s jaw twitched, but that was the only sign of a negative reaction. “Two hours? Man, that’s quick. I guess you’d rather do just about anything than have dinner with me.” and he smiled. “Rain check, then. Hang on.” and he stood up and went through the door behind the bar. He came back a minute later with a black velvet bag with a gold-colored rope tie at the top. He sat it on the bar and said “I got you a little something. I was gonna give it to you before you left… just didn’t think that would be right now.

Inside the bag was a clear bottle with a dark red liquid in it. “Bourbon. Drink some after your surgery and you’ll know if your new lungs for sure.” He looked at her for moment and the shook his head and looked at the floor before looking up.

“I’m glad you’re gonna get better, Rev. But I’m not gonna lie… I’m gonna miss you.”

“A lot.”

Mike
