OOC: If you can’t come up with something you can part with… you are welcome to move on. This is an open universe you can negotate with anyone. You burnt the obvious bridge at Base 5 when you shot up the joint, but aside from them, you have met 5 different races, helped one, and seem to be on friendly terms with another. No one is making you negotiate with pirates aside from they have what you need and are willing to trade it.

Luke

Kelly was at an empass. Her career was also about to get a promotion or reduction in crew quarter size when she was transferred to commanding a garage scowl on the east end of Timbucktoo. Either way she could not let her morals dictate the lives of a thousand people. She was responsible for them and interpreting the Federations laws. Hell, there was a chance she would never get home so the moral conscious discussion could wait until after they got back to Federation space.

Tapping her comm badge, Kelly contacted Drayke. “Mr. Drayke, how is the assessment going on the engines,” she asked.

=/\=It’s like a rat nest from some gypsy camp that lived near a sheep farm… but it’ll get cleaned up… I always do the job you know that. =/\=

“Okay, I need you to give the ship a tune-up. Say twenty-five percent to the engines and thirty percent to the shields with the excelsior warp drive components.” Kelly looked at Alfo. With the technology being so vastly different there was no way to give Alfo exactly what he wanted but it would make him fast and better protected than before. Hopefully, this would give them some if not all of the supplies they needed.

Kelly Bordeaux

Jacen paused for a second before the reply came. =/\= That’ll take longer, you do know that right? =/\=

Alfo squinted, it wasn’t exactly what he wanted… but 25% more speed and 30% more defense was something truly valuable. “And, how to repair these upgrade…” He wasn’t going to take an upgrade that wouldn’t last long enough to use.

“If you bring your upgrade teams aboard, You can follow us to our base of operations.”

Alfo

Drayle, CE

D’vash had been listening intently to the negotiations, and though he didn’t show it, the mention of the pirate’s base did start a spark. Seeing their base and being able to get whatever info they could would be a great source of Intel. It would also put the Atlantis in great danger of being outnumbered. Basic economics: he didn’t think the profit was worth the risk.

The thought of giving the pirates an upgrade, even at the percentage Kelly suggested was a risk to this area. The pirates were already a major player, the upgrades could definately upset the balance of power. He decided to speak up.

“Captain, if I may interject,” he stated addressing his captain, “even the slightest of upgrades you are offering could cause a major upset to the local power base. WE CAN get the materials we need for our repairs from elsewhere if need be, without making a ‘deal with the devil’.”

With his last words, he shifted his gaze back to Alfo and Shade.

Odinson (CIO)

OOC: I presuming you didn’t say it in a manner that Alfo should have been able to hear… and you are probably have to offer something to get something.

“Yes but half the reason we are out here is to explore, take chances, and learn from others. Someone has to be the first to trust in a diplomatic situation. I hope that it’s not misplaced,” Kelly gave Alfo and Shade a side glance briefly.

Tapping her comm badge Kelly reached out to contact the Altantis to get the required teams over to help with the upgrades.

Captain Kelly Bordeaux

Mardusk looked at Odinson and back to the Skipper. “Ma’am, I for one agree with him. Maybe we take the good Captain Alfo’s offer as a potential. Reach out, see if anyone else has a better deal to offer.” and he looked at Alfo and Shade. “I’m sure you would understand us trying to see all our options… especially as we have no vested interest in the sector… and have a demonstrated desire not to upset the balance you currently have, sir.”

Mardusk, CoS

GM

=/\= Captain, I got the teams running. We can give the tune-ups as you suggested, and we are upgrading parts that are considered intergalactic standards… consider I the Janeway Pact… it will get the stuff done as needed. Should be another two hours.=/\=

Drayke, CE

Kelly tapped her badge to reply to Jacen and indicate she understood his message. “Mr. Alfo I has been a pleasure,” Kelly said standing up. “If it is not a problem I would suggest we maybe postpone dinner so that we are able to begin the repairs to our ships. If you would be so kind as to get the supplies for my ship I will set up teams to help you with our refit.”

Kelly waited for Alfo to leave before she looked at her officers around the table. “Okay so what I am about to say is not going to be popular or probably liked but we need those parts. We don’t have the luxury to sit back and shop around for estimates. The Atlantis is broken. Luckily we are not so broken as to so far not be able to take care of ourselves. Everyone sitting around this table knew what it meant when we signed the dotted line joining Starfleet but I have one thousand crew to think of in this decision. Kids, wives, civilians that signed up to explore the galaxy and not be left to die in some far-off corner of the galaxy. My job is not not only complete missions, but get them home. Now we all swore an oath to the prime directive and many of you are going to say that trading with them is a violation of it but the only part that is iron clad is we do not interfere or alter the course of a non-warp capable species. Alfo and his crew are clearly able to achieve interstellar flight. Us helping them is not changing the course of their development. Helping Alfo and his crew could change the power of this sector but that precludes we are not going to share the same information with others when we get to the space station. The reason we are out here is to explore, take chances, and gain and share knowledge. At some point we gotta give something up to get something. Even bloodied and bruised we still have the upper hand with these guys but we are lost, alone, blind, and are not going to make it long without supplies, information and help. So we are going to help Alfo and his crew with increasing his engine’s efficiency and shielding by thirty percent. This will get us what we need and hopefully to that base where we will get a better idea of what’s going on and how to get home. As to the prime directive, before anyone starts to quote rules or regulations, think about all the times we have broken those rules and regulations for what the Federation or Starfleet has deemed the greater good. The prime directive is not the ten commandments. It is more like the old Constitution of the United States. It is a living breathing document we are meant to interprete with our own best judgment with our best moral and ethical standards in place. Any questions?”

Kelly Bordeaux

Mardusk just looked at her and said “One. We’re being recorded. Two. Greater good doesn’t equate with saving our own asses, Skipper. You have the majority of your senior leadership here, and most of us are telling you this is a bad idea… at least for now. But you also know we’ll do what you say. But we’ll also tell you you are making a rushed choice with not enough info. But… that’s the Captain’s prerogative. Right? So let’s get on with it.” Mardusk wasn’t mad, but he wasn’t going to hide the fact he thought they were rushing in blind.

The improvement will require more time than that. As to put even Excelsor class items with require a more refined warp chamber. It would have to be done with either increasing the size or improving the mechanism itself by introducing the use of dilithum crystals. Either would be discussed in terms of days, the crystal route taking less time, 5-6 days vers 9-11 days.

It shouldn’t be an issue as repairs to the Atlantis would take longer than that anyways.

GM

OCC: I am 100% okay with debating the moral dilemma of this situation. In fact, it might be fun but to move the sim around I am going to say that if Luke wants to start a new thread moving us forward please post to that in addition to this one as you debate with Kelly the pros and cons of her decision. No one has to but I am open to hearing everyone’s stance. We are just going to however proceed with the repairs and helping the pirates to move the sim along.

Kate

Mardusk, CoS

D’vash pursed his lips and shook his head, not happy with Kelly’s decision. “This time, Captain, I agree with Mardusk. We’ve got options, let’s investigate them.”

He paused a moment and shifted his gaze to Mardusk, nodding in agreement. “But, it’s you call, Captain. I’m 100% behind you.”

River did not like this idea at all ” My concern is this, lets say we fix our ship and do the upgrade for this lot” she said gesturing out of the door “What happens then if Alfo decides . Hey you know that ship that upgraded us and had all that tech. Well I want the rest. Lets go after it. Then we’re dealing with an enemy; that knows our ship because they helped fix it, and has been upgraded by us. All of a sudden we have a new problem one of our own making and so does the sector” she said

“But as the others said it your call Ma’am. We’ve got your back” she added after a short pause.

For the next step Alfo would suggest an exchange of guests. Each ship would send a dozen crew members to enjoy the culture of the other’s ship while the repairs were going on. He would also suggest that the Atlantis would deactivate her sensors and let the Pirate ship tow her through the asteroid field to their base… this was something they would drop as a significant safe guards as they knew no matter how cautious they were about hiding the way there… any ship could make the determination of where they were by basic math.

GM

Kelly raised an eyebrow and let out a half laugh as she took a sip of whatever they had served in the cup. “I think a cultural exchange between the crew would benefit us both,” she said to Alfo. It was not like she or Shade was going to be giving the guests of the others ships the keys to the kingdom so to speak. The pirate crew had no idea of what the holodeck probably was and even if they did the beauty of a holodeck was that it so close to reality it was hard to know the difference. Kelly would let Alfo’s people explore a simulation of the engine and such from the safety of the controlled holodeck environment showing them older and less advanced systems. That way if they did try to sabotage or use the info against them it would be clear what the intent was if the cultural exchange. If they were in the up and up then Alfo and his crew would use it to better their people. One had to hold out hope for the positive as they first course of action.

“As for the towing…no thank you. We like to drive and are pretty good with directions. Give us the course and we can keep up,” she said to Alfo.

Kelly Bordeaux

“Excellent,” He didn’t think he would get full control of the Atlantis sensors and navigation anyways. Plus after the Atlantis was repaired, with or without hard knowledge of their position, they could do pretty much what they wanted to anyways. “I could select who you could have visit… or” He produced of tablet. “This is a roster of our officers. If you’d pick ten at random. That would be fair? don’t you think.”

“Very,” Kelly gave the list a cursory glance before handing it to Mardusk. The list was just names but with Mardusk being the head of security, she figured he could pick out ten names as easy as she could. “In order to facilitate your upgrades I may need to send more than ten people but I can assure you your crew will be treated as guests.”

D’vash didn’t like the idea of deactivating sensors. They would be letting the pirates lead them blindly into any situation they wanted and it sounded remarkedly like an ambush. Even with shields up, they would be sitting ducks for someone to sneak up on them or have a larger force awaiting them deeper into the asteroid field. With no way to track their path, the Atlantis would be a their mercy trying to escape the field.

Odinson (CIO)

For River the suggestion screamed ambush. Lead a blind damaged ship to a place only you know then attack. A nice payday for the pirates and they wouldn’t have to help the Atlantis. They would be able to force the crew to do the work for them. Of course if they did try River would be more then happy to kill as many as she could before that.

She thought that if the captain did decide to go along with it. that maybe having herself stay and a few other officers who could put up a decent fight. Would be the best bet. Let Mardusk go back to the Atlantis so he could do his job. Then the Captain would have two good fighters in charge in two places. But it was just an idea she’d wait to see what the Captain said first before voicing it.

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

Kelly stood up from the table and looked at the officers around the table. “Lt. Styxx, if you could report to Commander Drayke to see what you can do it help with the upgrades of the systems. Time to brush up on all those engineering classes you took at the academy,” she looked at the officer. Kelly wasn’t sure how much engineering the Marine knew but it was a good enough excuse to get the officer down to Drayke so that the man had some protection if needed on the ship.

Kelly Bordeaux

River nodded “Yes ma’am” she said respectfully as she turned to leave. River hadn’t the faintest idea how she was going to bluff her way through engineering. She had taken all of one lesson on engineering. And she doubted battlefield repair would be sufficient enough for the ship upgrades. She’d just see how it went.

Meanwhile…

“No no no!” Jacen replied as he took the panel from the hands of one of his pirate helpers as he glared at him with a furious stare. “Do you want us to all explode? Is that what you want?” he said as he handed the panel to the crewman behind him as he pushed up on the Pirate Alfo had settled him with. “If you put that pannel in that junction it is going to cause a feedback loop that shuts down your aux power systems. Right now, those systems are keeping us from not overloading and completely frying us all… so I would appreciate whatever school they taught you in space Nassau or whatever hell you learned from to not do such obviously stupid things.” Jacen grunted as he looked behind as two of the other pirates were coming his way carrying high beams to reinforce the hull.

The man raised an eyebrow… Nassau… “but I pulled the breakers,” Not immediately understanding that the panel was completely wrong in the first place.

“Heads up! Jacen shouted as they ducked as everyone got under from the men as he took a deep breath. “I swear to am going to give that lass of a Captain a stern talking to if she sends me out to another hell hole like this… she’s angry I didn’t put wheels on her table… it all makes sense,” he mumbled under his breath as he moved back to continue the upgrades and repairs.

Drayke, CE

The engineers looked at the specifications given. They argued amongst themselves for a moment until a more senior man flipped the page 90 degrees. Then shrugged and went back to assisting best they could.

GM

GM

River chose that moment to walk in. she saw the group of engineers and shook her head If there combat skills are anything like their engineering skills, this will be easier then i though of things go south she thought to herself as she looked for Drayke. Once she spotted him she came over to him.

“The Captain sent me to assist you Sir” she said respectfully

“What do you know about issolniear cells and integrating through bypassed circuits of… maybe fusion technology…” Drayke said as he kneeled down look at some of the pannel working and shook his head. “This place feels like it’s put together with duct tape and anger.”

Lieut Styxx (Marine OIC)

River shrugged her shoulders “You tend to learn a thing or two, when you spend five months constantly under fire making battlefield repairs” she said kneeling down next to Drayke and leaning over “To be honest the CO sent me here to make sure you had some back up. Just encase.” she said in a low whisper so only Drayke could hear

OOC: I’m going to move us a little ahead in terms of location. You can continue playing without a jump if you’d like.

IC : The Pirate Ship, whose name they finally learned to be Craven’s Nest. Arrived at their base, which was deeper in the asteroid field and behind a layer of mobile mines. The pirate ship basically landed. In an area surrounded by dozens of habitation units.

From that moment a few hundred people moved between the habitation units and the Craven’s Nest with supplies… or nothing at all. But the extra hands had more than a few fairly talented engineers, but the most talented people were already on the ship for the most part. Additionally all the Federation people could see/feel that they were being watched and followed at all times.

GM

Drayke, CE

D’vash followed the captain’s lead and stood as well. “If you’re looking for volunteers to stay behind, Captain, I’m sure my skills can be of some use here.”
