Maybelle walked into sickbay nervously looking around. Her sleeve was pulled down over her arm as she scanned the room looking for one person in particular. Not seeing her directly, she moved to the nurse’s station and put on her best smile. “Maybelle Spunkler,” Ravonne Washington greeted the tweleve-year-old preteen with a knowing grin. Life was always more interesting when the kid showed up. It was never simple but always more interesting. At least this time Maybelle was not coming in with a broken limb, ice pack on her head, or body part wrapped into a rag that was covered in blood. “What can I do you for today?” Nurse Washington picked up the candy bowl and extended it towards the young kid.

“Oh nothing,” Maybelle fished through the bowl with a finger as if searching for the exact piece of chocolate she wanted. Seeing a bright orange wrapper at the bottom of the bowl she fished out a Reece cup and then a second. Holding up the second she looked at Washington waiting for her to say two were okay.

“Take three…if you tell me why you are here?” Nurse Washington assumed whatever it was the brought Maybelle here was not too bad; however one could never tell.

“That is a doctor-patient privilege,” Maybelle said in a serious tone popping one of the candies in her mouth. The comment brought a half chuckle out of Washington. Maybelle at times was smarter than most gave her credit but she was still a kid and all kids were intrinsically dumb saying things they did not always understand.

“True but Dr. Shan is away on leave so that means you get to break in a new doc. Go easy on her. She is a civilian but so nice. You are going to like her. Her name is Dr. Evrilla. Bed three,” Washington motioned to the left with a stylus.

“Cool,” Maybelle said turning before facing Washington again and fishing out a fourth Reece cup. “Since Dr. Shan isn’t here to give out a lollipop I will just take this for a snack’um.” Leaving the nurses desk with a pocket full of chocolate and peanut butter, Maybell found the indicated bed. Not being able to use her right arm, it took a big of wiggling to get on top of it. Eventually, with enough squirming and rolling, Maybelle sat up and let her legs dangle over the edge waiting to meet the new doc.

It was clear to see that something was wrong with the ever plucky unofficial mascot of the Atlantis by the way she crawled up onto the bed. At times Sickbay would slap on a band aid and send kids on thier way but something struck Ravonne as odd. Bringing up Maybelle’s contact form she got a quizzical look on her face seeing the point of contact. “Well how did that happen,” she murmured half out loud reading the name. It was not that she doubted the competency of the name on the form but how the name got to the form. It would be a kin to a hippie knowing a bare knuckle brawler. The two rarely traveled in the same circle but somehow these two groups had crossed. Washington leaned back and decided she needed to get a cup of coffee before making the call. This playing out with the people involved was going to be far more interesting than her holo show McHottie - Stripper cop which was her normal viewing activity at this time of day. Moving across sickbay she stopped at the CMO’s door. “Dr. Evrilla you have a patient in Bed three. I am contacting her parents to come down as soon as I get some coffee.”

“Thank you Ravonne!” Evrilla called through her door. Parents… a young patient then. She turned to Tatyl, the eight-year-old coloring on her office floor. “Icecube, would you like to shadow me?” Tatyl nodded, even as she scrunched up her face at the nickname. The two left the office, Tatyl trailing behind her mother.

Evrilla smiled at the girl, offering her hand politely. “I’m Evrilla, and this is my daughter Tatyl. It’s nice to meet you.” Tatyl waved boisterously, practically bouncing over to the biobed.

“Hi,” Maybelle smiled happily and reached into her pocket fishing out a peanut butter cup which she extended to Tatyl. “Want one? It’s the best candy in the world. It is peanut butter covered in chocolate. Nurse Ravonne always hides them in the bottom of the bowl so the adults don’t get to eat them all. You just gotta fish around for them at times. ” Looking around conspiratorially, Maybelle leaned closer to Tatly and whispered, “Nurse Ravonne always has extras in the top drawer of her station in the drawer marked bed pans. She doesn’t keep them in the bed pan section but it scares away most of the adults.

Tatyl grinned and took the candy, barely sparing a glance towards her mother. “Thanks!”

Keeping her right arm still, Maybelle dug a second peanut butter cup out of her pocket as she fidgeted trying to open it one-handed. “So is this your mom,” she asked Tatyl finally getting the candy open and taking a bite. Having been a doctor for as many years as the CMO had, it would be completely obvious that Maybelle was not moving her right on purpose. It was also resting on her leg with the palm up indicating there was something on the underside of her arm that brought Maybelle into sickbay. There was no blood so it could easily be ascertained that it was not a cut and since there was no swelling it led one to believe there was no break.

Evrilla raised an eyebrow at the children, appearing stern, but there was clear humor in her voice. “I see I’ll have to find something to beat peanut butter cups if I want to be the favorite around here.” She moved to the end of the biobed, on the girl’s right side. “May I see your arm…” She checked the patient records at the end of the bed. “Maybelle?”

Tatyl blinked in surprise, not having recognized the injury. “What happened? Did you fall off a table?” She leaned towards Maybelle, whispering loudly. “My amma treats lots of people who say they fell off of tables, but I’m pretty sure they were doing something else.”
