The day after her arrival Cara made her way to sickbay. PaDD in hand, with a map of the ship, she was not going to use the LCARs. It shouldn’t be that hard, right? The turbolift they took the day before to deck 11 they turned left and followed the outside edge of the saucer to the counseling suite. It was right above the port section of sickbay on the deck below. So take the same turbolift to deck 12, turn left and follow the bend. It sounded so logical in her head. But unfortunately poor Cara took the wrong turbolift. Got off on the right deck, but wandered the deck for 30 minutes before she happened on the starboard side section of sickbay. Well at least she had left really early for her appointment.

She stopped a passing nurse, “Lt. O’Farrell, I’m here for my check-in.”

Lt O’Farrell

“Of course!” Nurse Faraday responded cheerfully. “The doctor is right through there, you can head to biobed 2.” Evrilla likely already knew there was a patient, but Faraday called back regardless. “Patient for you!” They yelled, returning to their work as soon as Cara moved on.

Cara nodded and walked on through making her way to the biobed and gently hopped up.

Evrilla sighed yet again, was it truly that hard for them to actually show people to beds? What if they were concussed and fell on their way? That unsettling image in mind, she headed to meet her newest patient, only to be surprised by brilliantly red hair. Unlike the XO’s color, this didn’t seem to be artificial, and Evrilla found herself slightly entranced by the unusual color. “Erm, I’m Evrilla, pleasure to meet you.” She cringed internally right after, realizing how awkward that had sounded.

Cara smiled warmly her voice bubbly and friendly and with a noticeable Irish accent “I’m Cara. It’s a pleasure, Evrilla. I arrived yesterday, new counselor. We’ll probably be workin’ together a fair bit.”

O’Farrell

“Yes, I imagine so. You’ll likely be seeing my daughter as well, I’ve read large moves can be traumatic.” Evrilla turned on the biobed and started the scan in a single practiced movement. She straightened up to speak directly to the other woman, smiling slightly. “Do you have any concerns or is today simply routine?”

Cara nodded, “I look forward to meeting her. Hopefully we can help smooth the transition.” Then she sighed, “Routine mostly. Except I get REALLY really space sick. I got a hypo yesterday from the on duty doctor yesterday afternoon. Said it would last 24 hours. I only get it at warp speeds and I never seem to adjust. I just stay sick until a few hours after we drop out of warp.”
O’Farrell, CNS

Evrilla, unlike the average doctor, seemed to perk up at that. “We can fix that! Have you ever used Vertazine for extended periods?” Vertazine wasn’t the same medicine she’d had the day before, it was a variation with no long-term side effects. “Ah, apologies. I’m a pathologist, long term space sickness is right up my alley.”
-CMO Evrilla

Cara perked up, “No I haven’t, and no apologies necessary. All my previous duty stations have either been planet side or a star base so once I arrive I’m okay. Would that help? Because I’m really dreading this stuff wearing off in a few hours.”
O’Farrell, CNS

“It’s similar to what you were using before, but stopping cold won’t have any effects, unlike most motion sickness meds.” Evrilla paused to pull up the details, offering the PADD to her. “You shouldn’t build up a resistance either, so you won’t have to increase the dosage over time.” She looked over the scan quickly, checking for any abnormalities. “After a while, you might even be able to decrease as you adapt to it.”

Cara took the padd and read the information in its entirety. She wasn’t an expert with medications, and she trusted her doctors. But when a doctor handed you information then you should read it. “So if we were planet side for a few days or at a space station I could stop taking it since I wouldn’t need it? How often would I need to take it?” The regular stuff couldn’t be taken for more than a few days, she knew. But she’d never needed it longer than that before. “How would I switch from one to the other. Would I just start when this dose wears off or do I need to wait a few days?”
O’Farrell, CNS

Evrilla opened the calculator app on her PADD, going through a series of equations that looked more complicated than they truly were. “I’d ask you to wait 3 hours before starting Vertazine once the Liticase clears. You’d be able to stop and start cold, as long as you aren’t layering motion sickness meds. Every 48 hours would be standard, and you’d get notifications.”
-CMO Evrilla

“So I would take it at 1900 tonight then? Do I come here to take it or do I take the hypo with me?” Cara made a note to make sure she had nothing going on from 1600 hours on. She knew from experience once the meds wore off the space sickness would return with a vengeance. She’d call it an early night.
O’Farrell, CNS

“Ah, if you aren’t worried about the effects you can take the hypo to your room, but if you feel that you need the supervision of a medical professional you can stay in the back of sickbay.” Evrilla had never been spacesick, so she wasn’t certain which option Cara would take. Evrilla quickly checked the time, then nodded. “1923 tonight, just to be safe.”
