“It varies. My favorite is a strawberry daiquiri. I know kinda cliché girly drink, but there it is. But tonight…I’m finally gettin’ past the cranky from a rough day. So it’s a straight bourbon kinda drink tonight. But I like a good Last Word too.” She glanced at the games and back at him. “Wonder if they have a weekly poker game.”

Cara

Mardusk shook his head. “No gin for me, gives me a headache.” He followed her gaze and then looked back and shrugged. “I dunno, but it’d be a nice place for one.” and he looked around briefly.

Looking back at Cara, he said “I’m sorry the day was rough for you. Anything you want or can talk about? I do have a pretty high clearance.” and he grinned and gave her a wink over his glass as he took a drink.

Cara sighed, leaned sideways against the bar, and took several sips from her glass before setting it down. “Funny ya should put it that way. Clearance is what it boils down ta. When Lt Edman left she’d been workin’ with several of the crew that had been…well their issues steamed from events tha’ were classified or required higher clearance. So they’d been seein’ the jr. counselors on board but couldn’t actually talk about the problem. She fixed that. So when she left for her medical treatment she made arrangements…I think at the time she thought she was comin’ back…for them. It looks like she actually had sessions with them over subspace. Still is with a couple, and her a civilian. Then Ms. Edman took over for almost 6 months. But it was the same problem as before, but worse because she was a civilian. She requested they send someone else because they needed help.” Cara took a long pull of her glass letting the warm burn slide down her throat.

The more she talked the more pronounced her lilt became. “So I’ve spent all day tryin’ ta get my clearance levels fixed. SF Medical got all the paperwork fixed but some thick langer in command donna see the point. Thinks their little secrets are more important than the people. And the rub of it all is 9 outta 10 times their secrets aren’t even that interestin’.”

Cara

“Yeah… but that tenth time the secret’ll make your hair stand on end… even if ya don’t have any.” and he took a drink. “I’m sure it’ll sort itself out. Sometimes it just takes a day or two. But I know how frustrating it can be, for sure.” He squeezed her hand and said “If I can help, just ask.” and took another sip.

“That’s the truth. Scary sight too..all this red standing up on end. Look some kind of demon from the depths of Tartarus.” Cara chuckled. “I appreciate it,” she squeezed his hand slightly, “But I wouldn’t ask you to do that. It will work out or they’ll get a reminder of why I’m still only a Lt.”

“So you are intelligent. You have a great sense of humor. You are drop-dead gorgeous. You take zero crap and great taste in food and drinks. Other than the whole dating Grant thing I see zero red flags with you… why hasn’t someone just swept you off your feet and taken you away from all of this?” he asked with a chuckle. “I mean… until now, of course.” and he grinned and winked at her.

Gravel

That was a lot of compliments all rolled together and Cara smiled genuinely, flushing only a little. The jab about Grant made her grin and was on the cusp of a sassy retort. Her eyes raised to his and, she opened her mouth but nothing came out. “Umm…yeah…no…” she cleared her throat and moistened her lower lip, “No idea.” She ran a hand through her hair, finger combing it back out of her face.

Cara

“You’re cute when your flustered, by the way.” he said softly. He reached up brushed a stray strand of hair back from her face and smiled. “And good to know I can do it.” and he squeezed her hand again.

Finishing his drink, he said “So what would you like to do now, Cara? Another drink while you gather your thoughts, perhaps?” Gravel was obviously enjoying the fact he left her speechless, and the wink he gave her indicated as much.
