“It varies. My favorite is a strawberry daiquiri. I know kinda cliché girly drink, but there it is. But tonight…I’m finally gettin’ past the cranky from a rough day. So it’s a straight bourbon kinda drink tonight. But I like a good Last Word too.” She glanced at the games and back at him. “Wonder if they have a weekly poker game.”

Cara

Mardusk shook his head. “No gin for me, gives me a headache.” He followed her gaze and then looked back and shrugged. “I dunno, but it’d be a nice place for one.” and he looked around briefly.

Looking back at Cara, he said “I’m sorry the day was rough for you. Anything you want or can talk about? I do have a pretty high clearance.” and he grinned and gave her a wink over his glass as he took a drink.

Gravel

Cara sighed, leaned sideways against the bar, and took several sips from her glass before setting it down. “Funny ya should put it that way. Clearance is what it boils down ta. When Lt Edman left she’d been workin’ with several of the crew that had been…well their issues steamed from events tha’ were classified or required higher clearance. So they’d been seein’ the jr. counselors on board but couldn’t actually talk about the problem. She fixed that. So when she left for her medical treatment she made arrangements…I think at the time she thought she was comin’ back…for them. It looks like she actually had sessions with them over subspace. Still is with a couple, and her a civilian. Then Ms. Edman took over for almost 6 months. But it was the same problem as before, but worse because she was a civilian. She requested they send someone else because they needed help.” Cara took a long pull of her glass letting the warm burn slide down her throat.

The more she talked the more pronounced her lilt became. “So I’ve spent all day tryin’ ta get my clearance levels fixed. SF Medical got all the paperwork fixed but some thick langer in command donna see the point. Thinks their little secrets are more important than the people. And the rub of it all is 9 outta 10 times their secrets aren’t even that interestin’.”

Cara

“Yeah… but that tenth time the secret’ll make your hair stand on end… even if ya don’t have any.” and he took a drink. “I’m sure it’ll sort itself out. Sometimes it just takes a day or two. But I know how frustrating it can be, for sure.” He squeezed her hand and said “If I can help, just ask.” and took another sip.

“That’s the truth. Scary sight too..all this red standing up on end. Look some kind of demon from the depths of Tartarus.” Cara chuckled. “I appreciate it,” she squeezed his hand slightly, “But I wouldn’t ask you to do that. It will work out or they’ll get a reminder of why I’m still only a Lt.”

“So you are intelligent. You have a great sense of humor. You are drop-dead gorgeous. You take zero crap and great taste in food and drinks. Other than the whole dating Grant thing I see zero red flags with you… why hasn’t someone just swept you off your feet and taken you away from all of this?” he asked with a chuckle. “I mean… until now, of course.” and he grinned and winked at her.

Gravel

That was a lot of compliments all rolled together and Cara smiled genuinely, flushing only a little. The jab about Grant made her grin and was on the cusp of a sassy retort. Her eyes raised to his and, she opened her mouth but nothing came out. “Umm…yeah…no…” she cleared her throat and moistened her lower lip, “No idea.” She ran a hand through her hair, finger combing it back out of her face.

Cara

“You’re cute when your flustered, by the way.” he said softly. He reached up brushed a stray strand of hair back from her face and smiled. “And good to know I can do it.” and he squeezed her hand again.

She blinked and looked away and back. A soft warmth traveling down her back, setting off butterflies and easing them at the same time.

Finishing his drink, he said “So what would you like to do now, Cara? Another drink while you gather your thoughts, perhaps?” Gravel was obviously enjoying the fact he left her speechless, and the wink he gave her indicated as much.

Gravel

The blush was bright and spread steadily up her neck into her cheeks. Her eyes flashed at him. She slid off the stool and stepped into his space. Right next to him, maybe an inch between them and looked up at him. “Well…” her voice was a whisper between them, but challenging, “we can go to the observation lounge, or....” Her eyes slid down and back up, “you can kiss me like you’re going to sweep me off my feet.”

Cara

Gravel looked at her and blinked… and blinked… and blinked again. “Uh… yeah… um… okay then… no pressure…” he said softly, his eyes locked onto hers. Slowly he leaned forward and brought his lips to hers, gently, and then slowly increased the pressure. His hands found her waist and he settled them on her hips and kissed her. It was like the arboretum kiss, but… more.

Gravel

Cara’s last coherent thought for several minutes was to never bluff in front of Gravel. There was a softening, as she relaxed in his hands, palms smoothing over his shoulders. Even on the stool Gravel was tall and Cara stretched up slightly. As he gently increased the pressure she responded with equal intensity, willingly drowning in the more.

Cara

When they finally broke the kiss, Gravel looked at her and said “Um… soooo… that just happened again.” and he smiled at her. He took her hand and then looked around and said “How about we do that observation deck now, huh?” and he began to lead her out of the bar.

Gravel

Cara smiled up at him and something in her eyes was michevious and daring him. “Yeah it did. Probably will again too. Practice ya know, since my feet are still on the ground.” Silent giggles shook her shoulders as she teased him. She followed him out hand still tucked firmly into his.

Cara

Gravel looked down at her and said “Hmmm… okay, then.” He led her to the turbo lift and said “Deck 4.” knowing full well she wouldn’t know where the Observation Deck was or not. As the doors slid open, he turned her quickly and immediately to the left, down a right hand turn, left, left again, then right… ensuring she was well turned around before stopping at a door and saying “One stop first.” and he opened the door and ushered her into…

Deck 4? It was on the same deck as their quarters? She didn’t remember that…quarters and a shuttle bay on deck 4. Well he did say he by passed the observation lounge because of her stomach. And while she contemplated this he’d led her every which way and she was totally turned around....wait black color on the floor… didn’t that mean their sec....

His quarters.

He then scooped her up off the floor like he was carrying her off, held her to him and then kissed her again… but this time there was no reservation. Just her, him, and the kiss.

Cara was caught totally off guard. Conversing with Gravel was easy and it was easy to be unguarded. If he thought she would hesitate, she did not. Cara had never been held like that and there was something intensely intimate about it that shook her, while she melted into the kiss.

Finally he broke the kiss and said “Ok… now the Observation Deck.” and set her abruptly on her feet. He then looked at her and said “And I’ll be sweeping you off your feet any time you dare me like that again.” and he grinned and winked.

Gravel

She flushed hotly, swallowed, and smiled at him from the corner of her eye. “I’ll remember that.” She looked…shocked and something else, but she slipped her hand back into his as they left. Her stomach felt all kinds of unsettled but in a good way.

Cara

They made their way to the Observation Deck. Gravel was silent, his mind swirling and his stomach churning like he had just been punched hard… but he liked it. When they finally stepped onto the Observation Deck, he had come to a decision and a realization… not necessarily in that order.

The deck was almost empty, and the dome was crystal clear. The ship was at impulse, rendezvousing with a Pendragon-class to transfer personnel. The massive warship hovered above the Atlantis, visible in all its glory through the transparent dome.

“Well… there you go.” he said softly. He nodded as the only other two people on the deck said hello as they passed and left.

They were alone.
