Cara nodded and tapped her combadge. =^=O’Farrell to Mardusk. Cmdr Jen wants all visiting workers evacuated off the ship.=^=
OOC: Not sure where to cross post this for security.

IC:
=^= O’Farrell to NE RSM Qrow. Cmdr Jen has issued an evacuation order. As soon as all the pirate crew is off the ship he wants everyone back on board. Possible incoming hostile.=^=

O’Farrell, CNS

Shade appeared on the screen… He hissed, =^=We are cursed… Are they coming this way?=^= Likewise the claxons started ringing on the Carrier.

The short answer was no. Although the Darkness ship disappeared frequently from the sensors, the pattern they could detect seemed to be a sweeping back and forth pattern that could be a search grid.

GM

Shade did not appear to be pleased and their actions quite urgent. That was good to know. But ‘cursed’? Interesting. =^= Not that we can see. It appears more like a search pattern. By any chance was this the direction that we came to your base? =^= Were they sniffing them out? How did they know they were even there without outside information? Something to consider another time.

To what stations there were he called out, “I need a star. What is our nearest star?”

Hi 673, orange dwarf star, 0.67 solar mass unit. 12 light years.

To engineering he said, “Repair status? Shield levels? Weapons? Impulse? Warp?”

In that regard 95% of all the repairs were completed and the supplies for the rest were placed in the Atlantis storage holds. As a general rule all systems were at 95% operational status with the exception of the superstructure which despite their best efforts they could not get past 80%. They technology and equipment on the base was not advanced enough to do more than a patch job on the significant hull damage.

To science he said, “We’ve had a century to work on our shields since first encountering anti protonic weapons. Where are we on this?”

“Counselor, what are the chances of convincing Shade and friends to join us?” he asked, mentally ticking down a list.
Jen, XO

Cara gave it a moment of thought, “Very high. Our weapons and technology are more advanced and they would be ‘grateful’ for the ‘assistance.’ But the cost may be high and more importantly there is the risk of being double crossed.”

O’Farrell, CNS

Jen considered the counselor’s assessment. “Given his .. concern over this ‘Darkness’ it seems his greater concern is with saving his skin.” To the Orb he said, “How ‘old’ are stories about this Darkness?”

“There have been reports that had consistency with ‘The Darkness’ for nearly a millennium. However correlating reports from 92 known races, there were confirmed incidents of ‘The Darkness’ appearing for nearly 200. “

Jen’s head jerked toward the Orb. “200 .. millennium? Or years?” Big difference ..

“200 years.” It specified.

He read through the status reports of the repairs. Mostly good. He’d have liked the structural numbers to be higher with regard to dealing with those beams but work with what one has rather than what one doesn’t have.

“Helm, plot a course for that star but do not engage. That is our fallback position.”
- Jen, XO

Jen noted on the screen that the shuttle was on approach.

=^= Bridge to Shuttle Bay. Prepare to receive the Captain and Away Team. Shuttle is en route. Make it smooth but make it quick. =^=

To the shuttle he said =^= Atlantis to Captain. I know you are enjoying your flight back with all the scenery, but we have an unknown bogie in the region that the Orb calls ‘The Darkness’ and which Shade indicated they - as in themselves - were ‘cursed’ that has, as you have likely seen, gotten them stressed. The Darkness appear to engage in random acts of chaos and destruction. It is a bio ship with some stealth ability and, according to the Orb utilizes anti-proton weaponry as well as fighter craft that may also make kamikaze runs. When we see them they appear to be on a path that is like a grid search. And welcome back. We are on yellow alert and =^=

The Darkness “Octopus” changed course and oriented itself towards the base… and in turn at both the Atlantis and Pirate Carrier. It increase to 3/4 impulse power. The ETA barring any major course changes due to the asteroid field was 19 minutes. It seemed that their ‘secret’ base of operations somehow revealed itself.

GM

“Swell, so they can move quick.” Jen muttered. There was time enough to get the shuttle back on board. “Helm, change course to rendezvous quicker with the shuttle to get them aboard.”

OOC: The Atlantis was landed on the asteroid. The two ships were a few hundred meters apart.
OOC: <grins> then we don’t have to move far then? .. I’d thought that since the carrier had launched that we had been cut loose as well .. my bad.

“Orb. Do you have tactical information on this ‘Darkness’? Range and strength of their anti proton weaponry?”

The Orb paused. “That is information that is not available to you.”

Wait. What did it say? Jen thought as his head turned and antennae focused on it. “You mean some information you have is classified?” That was telling. It meant that that was gathering information on them in return. Sneaky. He frowned. Fine. They’d find out the tried and tested way.

“Yes,” The Orb responded bluntly. “This Orb contains a large percentage of the knowledge of the Lorn. Much of that is classified or beyond your comprehension. However the information can be referenced to allow a non-classified version to you.”

How sentient was this ‘Orb’? A big data processor or a round form of ‘Data’? Beyond my comprehension. Jen bristled at that and almost slipped out a ‘try me’ before sighing. There was a lot they didn’t know about things yes. “How do you feel about ceasing to exist?” he asked.

“I don’t have feelings in regard to that. I am a data system tasked with supporting your exploration of this quadrant of space.” So the Orb does not classify itself as alive.

‘Too bad,’ Jen muttered to himself. Then the Orb might have ‘skin in the game’ and be a little more helpful. It reminded him of certain ‘intel’ officers who, to Jen, were cheerful - as much as they tended to be, as in not - and stating their willingness to help, but wanting to keep their secrets to themselves and not yield anything without being prodded.

“Tactical. They’re coming to visit. Get eyes on that squid and tell me all you can.”

“Science. That is an organic ship. What does that mean? Is it natural or artificial power generation. Is it a mix of tech and bio? How does that thing move?”
Jen, XO

There was clearly a mechanical aspect to the ship. The thrust was clearly some sort of artificial power. There was no fact of anti-proton weapons, that was information given by the Orb, which up to this point has been accurate.

OOC: Scans have been passive so far as active scans, much like using active radar, active scans would definitively reveal their position. That was up to you. However if the Darkness was anything like the other advanced race the Lorn, their partially bio ships were very resistant to scans.

GM

They knew where the base was. They were making a beeline. Surely they’d ‘see’ them if they were to move away from the base any more than they were now. If the Atlantis could see them and, Jen suspected, they were at least at their level of tech with a bio ship like that, they’d see them as they moved off. Extra intel was not going to hurt them.
- Jen, XO

OOC: I’m presuming that means go to active scanning.

The Octopus was highly sensor deflective. At this range the beams weren’t getting any real penetration and therefore couldn’t reveal much. The hull was some sort of biologically formed neutronium lattice with a rodinium ‘skin’. At this point Federation weapons have not been able to destroy a solid neutronium plate and rodinium was the hardest substance able to be used by the Federation. Just by hull design, excluding any active shielding (if the Octopus had any) suggested that the Atlantis was out defended by a factor of 5 at a minimum. Weapons could not be detected, but the Orb did identify them.

“For a squid you have a pretty hard shell,” Jen murmured. That was big tech to do that. “Tactical. Analysis and recommendations?” he called out. While he was fine with toe to toe he was certainly not against a tactical retreat. “What are our pirate friends doing?” Somehow he could see them cutting and running.
Jen, XO

OOC: Pasting in the cross post …
IC:
=/\=Will be on the bridge shortly. Bordeaux out.=/\=

It had best be shortly. As he watched the bio ship approach he wondered what kind of speed that thing might do. Could they outrun it? Were they about to get their shiny new paint job scratched up .. again? “As soon as the Captain is aboard go to Red Alert. Raise shields. Helm, plot potential evasive patterns in this asteroid field. Use the asteroids as you are able for cover. We don’t know what that ship is capable of or really what or who it wants.”
- Jen, XO

Gm

The long and the short of this was that the Atlantis was in this region of space by accident and held no firm allegiances. So, in that same word phrase, ‘skin in the game’, they had none to speak of. Going against this ‘Darkness’ held no strategic value for them. A deus ex machina in reverse as it were. He fixed his senses on the view screen. The biological angles of that creature would deflect phasers and other beam weapons. They may have better luck with torpedoes.

“Science, with what data we have would photon or quantum torpedoes disrupt their hull?”

“What are the pirates doing at this time?” He figured they were getting ready to run. As much as Jen felt they owed nothing, they were even more outmatched by this Darkness. One possibility was that they might be able to engage in a holding action until the Pirates were away and, perhaps, out of range. Jen felt confident they could do that much, though he was worried about this ‘Darkness’ ace in the hole of their fighter craft that could become suicide ships. He was not about to risk crippling the Atlantis this far from home from pirates who essentially ‘tagged’ them with a radioactive marker.

“Helm, as soon as the Captain is on board, pull us away from the pirate base and put some space between us and the carrier - just enough to know what the vector of that Darkness is heading to.”
- Jen, XO
