Evrilla grinned broadly. Feeling Tatyl’s enjoyment was nearly intoxicating for her.

Evrilla’s grin was handsome. He had a moment of sadness in this, that of her being essentially blind and unable to see her own smile. But she could feel more than Jen ever could. He wondered whether that made up for it.

Then, setting the case down, he picked up the ushaan-tor. “Now, let’s look at how to hold it properly. It looks easy but a proper hold will maintain control. See the edge. It is very sharp and..” Jen paused to move it in a fluid figure eight. “.. is an extension of your own hand. It will help you not only in fighting but in not hurting yourself.” He shifted the angle of it just slightly and brought it down by his hip showing her how it being just off angle could, if moved quickly, hurt oneself.

“Go ahead. Pick it up. Feel its weight. It will be heavy for you at first but that will change.”

Tatyl, finally given permission and guidelines, picked it up gleefully. “My parents had these,” she whispered.

Everyone did, Jen thought. It was almost like having a flag or clan coat of arms. “Now you do,” he said quietly.

Jen took some time to watch Tatyl take it up. Moving behind her he reached around to curl her small fingers around the handle, showing her the proper hold, then moved them to other places to show what was not right but always back to the proper hold. “Do you feel the difference? Now, this is the ‘ready’ position. Let’s try putting it down and then picking it up and going to the ready position. I’ll do it with you.” Picking up his own he set it down on the floor. Then, when she was ready he went through a series of picking it up, moving to the ready position with the proper hold then putting it back down again.

Shifting her hand along the handle, Tatyl managed to find the center to hold it perfectly balanced, but when she set it down, she lost it. “It’s hard to hold.” She found the ready position and the hold, but had trouble holding the Ushaan. “Why is it easier to hold it wrong?” She said, after having to readjust again.
-Tatyl

“It is heavy at first.” Still behind her he held her wrist and helped her keep it steady. “Like many things you will become stronger to do it. Not unlike stirring a bowl of meal-loaf. It is tiring at first. My shen bade me to stir it when I was young like you. It was hard.” He let out a small laugh. “She had so much energy, strength in her. I could not keep up and she could stir it like it was nothing.” He let her work it. “You will find that many things in life, not just this, are easier to do the wrong way than the right way. That is why we need to every be courageous to do what is right.”

Tatyl nodded, her lips pressed into a firm line. She paused to take a breath, then grabbed the Ushaan again, this time with the correct position. Looking up at Jen she grinned. “Patience.”
-Tatyl

Jen smiled back. “Patience,” he repeated in a somewhat more emphasized fashion that he felt was appropriate for the moment and by her age - given what Jen knew of children and how they responded - which, certainly to Jen’s surprise, was amazingly homogenous among the dominant races in the Federation. Even Vulcans, though they would not admit to it; their response was that it was only ‘logical’ to respond in a way that touched on their developing logic centers.

They worked this for a time until he sensed Tatyl was getting tired. He then said, “That’s good. You can keep this. It is yours now but you must only practice with it when I or your mother are there. This,” he said, pulling out another, “is for practice. It’s edge is dull and, as you can see here, marked on it are the finger positions to use.” He smiled. “and yes, even I use one like this when practicing. It avoids .. accidents. Deal?”

Jen, XO

Tatyl looked up at Jen, mouth open in shock. If Jen was to look over at Evrilla, he would see her surprise as well. “You’re just gonna give it to me? Just like that?” She watched him closely, practically staring him down.

“Thank you.” Tatyl nodded and grinned. “You’ll be proud.”
-Tatyl

Jen felt her surprise not to mention saw it. Glancing over to Evrilla he too saw a similar surprised expression. Inside he was awash with his own .. turbulent feelings. Was this a restorative .. a redemption of his own failure with his son? Had he been too long afield and not there to follow through with what he had begun? Or was it inevitable based on his personality and the disappearance of the rest of the family overnight that elicited a rejection of his culture, and of Jen. He knew his emotions were likely being picked up by Evrilla; that was what it was.

Jen nodded his affirmation that he was giving it to her. “I know I will,” he said. Perhaps through her and his help they could be redeemed..

Straightening up to stand he faced Evrilla. “Do you have a Cal’a Tea?” That was a traditional, and while not common, tea, was something any Andorian would be familiar with. Outside of that circle it was unlikely. He grew up with it. It was a pungent tea, served cold as always. He remembered waking up to that and other breakfast smells. In a way it was his secret ‘comfort food’.
